Hi! I've got a pair of turntables which I got yesterday. I will probably sound like a completly retard right now but I'm a beginner in this kinda stuffs, to the question - when I bought the turntables I got a program called "Mixvibes" with it and I just wondering, You need to have a sound card right? like a USB sound card or something? Maya 44 or something...
Dude... You should give DJ lessons :) I'm not a DJ but I am interested in learning the craft on vinyl, and your videos have really helped me get an insight into some of the basics and mixing. Loving these scratch tutorials, I really want to get myself a pair of decks and a mixer right now... For a complete and utter newb to DJing, what setup would you recommend?
Hi, this question has nothing to do with this video but i was just lookin for you cause i know you will get back to me asap... whats the best way to film a dj mix.. do i film with the cam and put the mix into computer then mix the 2 files once i am done?? im thinking of using cubase 5 for the audio because i use that for makin tracks... i also use windows movie maker.. is there a better way of doin this? thanks..
Hey i have been DJing for a couple of months now, learned everything from scratch from this man, he is mint and the best dj tutor by far on the internet, please look on my channel and tell me what you think of my mini mix's, all feedback welcome as it will help me improve cheers
great vid Ellaskins, but what about scratching with a jog wheel, like mixdecks? I would really like to learn. Do you have a vid for that? I want to thank you for all your advice. I have been djaying for 10years now and doing all weddings. Mixing with ramp in/out and fade in/out music mixes, sometimes beatmatch fun. Since I have watched your vids, I have learned so much quick tips and want to thank you for all your hard work. Keep Mixing and God Bless!
@Siricko14 I just figured it would be easier to move the cross fader since you only have to move it a tiny bit if you have it adjusted to do so, but with the fader you have a pretty big distance to go. Dunno i was just curious.
@kaliflax he's only pulling the record back not the platter. he ment to not pull the platter back because it will mess up the motor, its ok to pull the record back
Didnt he say to never slow it down? i dont understand why he'd say never slow it down with the platter moving then slow it down? im not hating, just wondering..
can you please make a video for a complete novice on where to start? i really would like to start, but i have no idea what to buy, where to go, or anything. i dont know any basics. that would help ALOT.
@andymasochist - Your comment seems vague, but in your defense it does suck when some self indulgant DJ who just learned is just masturbating for the audience and oversaturating or upstaging the rest of the music. In my opinion it should happen incidently as part of beat juggling and cutting and playing a role in the overall rhythm.
I like this video Very good tutorial and easy to understand, I was at best-buy earlier and was wonderinf if stanton are good turntables their like $200 a table and like $125 for the fader part. Got pumped about djing hit me back for an answer want to learn really bad, huge Hip-Hop fan.
Hi Elias! Please stop using this line-fader! Use the crossfader with very sharp curve to get better sounds. Your fader must "on and off" the sound, that's all. Greetz.
Oh an Jonny go down to your local record store and see if they have any skipless sample records, its just one sample on the whole vinyl this also helps
turn the counter weight around the other way & push it right to end, also i check the anti skate so theres not to much force pushing against the grooves on ur record keep it centre, by doin this, it wil put a bit more pressure on your needles an vinyl, i wouldnt recommend doing this on good needles but its for a good cause haha, watch your hand control aswel nice and smooth youl get use to it, it all takes time hope this helps bro
Hi, ive been playing a few years now and whenever i try and attempt scratching, my needle always jumps, ive got ortofon concorde cartridges / needles and i can only assume im either using too much force or my tonearm and counter weight is not setup correctly? Can anyone give me any help with this, what am I doing wrong, the neddle always seems to jump off the groove im scratching, its so annoying and its prevented me from taking scratching any further which i would really like to learn how 2do
Do you want to use vinyl or cdj or digital midi controllers?
I know that I used a pair of used denon DN-S1000's and a DN-X120 mixer for my first set up. On eBay the CDJ's ran about 400 total and the mixer was about 170. Get yourself nice headphones, whatever you do.
I don't agree at all. That's a complete waste of money. If you have a few hundred to spare for something you'll only use for practicing purposes for a few months, then will be obsolete, then sure. But I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
Well, if you're into the idea of turntablism, I really couldn't help you out, 'cause I'm a CDJ man myself. I just get into the scratching basics... the setup really depends on the individual.
@JBAgent007 just make sure it has pitch control so that you can beat mix (or beat match as some ppl call it) some record players dont have a slider for pitch control they only have a button for 33 and 45 rpm...
one question i have the djx700 and is four channel and i want to play in each channel one song so i can buy two usb interfaces(American Audio Audio Genie Pro USB Phono Interface) and connect the four channel or i need to buy one interface with four outputs, one more thing do anyone know about MIDI to rca cables? please help
buy one with four inputs. If they are all on the same USB channel there is less chance of 1)overheating and 2) wear on the USB interface. If you wanna go midi to RCA get something like an M-audio fastrack pro or Audio 8 DJ from NI or SL3 from serato. That's your best bet for integration. If you're going to go digital, that's the way.
lol jonathan! Nice how you move your hat from right to left (or anticlockwise as you brits say) during pts 1,2, and 3 of this demo. thanks again for the tips!
I do mix trance and house ,not much scratching people do with this music,i think scratch skills better is practice with slow BPM like hip hop,rap and rnb music.what do you think guys?
Well I think it's actually also good with higher Bpm's like drum and bass, hardcore and that kinda styles, but also hip hop, rap, and rnb and that stuff ;-)
cool video. Im asking for some help tho. ive bin interested in buying a turntable for a while cus it seems like a really cool thing to learn and i think id enjoy it. i have about 200$ saved up but i have noo idea where to start or what to buy as a beginer and even how to learn. soo if anybody has any advice pls help. :]
don't listen to rossycee08.... belt drive turntables are like shit to learn (and even for profesional use) it's much more difficult, and you will get exasperated while learning....I recommend you to buy a pair of direct drive turntables and any mixer...vestax or something like that....
your needle that you use to scratch, has recommended weight of say 3.5 turn it up to 4... if your skipping ty the tone arm adjust depending on your turntables.. Or get if all else fails get new Decks and pay for Dj lessons !! lol .. good luck !

Because it's a musical instrument....there will always be someone playing it. And if you have a negative comment dont watch the video. For us that are appreciative ellaskins...thanks for the tutorials.
more to the point, why the hell is there always some moron complaining about other peoples lifestyles? no matter where you go there will always be some fool who is so bored with their own life that they gotta antagonise others for what they do. get over yourself.alot of the reason for being a dj is that it doesn't confine you to one particular style, its easy to pick up, and most all, its great fun. maybe that why every white boy, and black kid for that matter, old and young are all into dj'ing.
Whats your problem?..he already said its a guide for total beginners you dunce, plus this guy would have rocked the party around 1982..haha..only kidding ellaskins...hey guys, check my videos..I will be doing some beginner tips myself, just showing some scratch tips like echo fading etc...still learning myself though..if you like my videos subscribe to them..nice one people...DJ Alkemy.
vtsorba asked a question and i think I know what they meant and I have the same question, i'll just restate it: What is the 'platter' on your right side? Is it strictly a vinyl meant to be scratched with? is it just noise?
In reply to Krithiam, you can scratch with belt drive turntables... but it is seriously not recommended. You will lose all torque very quickly, leaving you with useless decks in need of repair. Direct drive turntables are the way to go, and can be picked up for a fraction more than belt driven turntables, and will last you a lot longer.
i understand all this but its good 2 ceep watching it so u no how 2 do it watching it once helped but i had 2 ceep reflecting it wile i was doing it so its helpful but not helpful inuf but still thx for ur time uve put into this m8

more to the point, why the hell is there always some moron complaining about other peoples lifestyles? no matter where you go there will always be some fool who is so bored with their own life that they gotta antagonise others for what they do. get over yourself.alot of the reason for being a dj is that it doesn't confine you to one particular style, its easy to pick up, and most all, its great fun. maybe that why every white boy, and black kid for that matter, old and young are all into dj'ing.

vtsorba asked a question and i think I know what they meant and I have the same question, i'll just restate it: What is the 'platter' on your right side? Is it strictly a vinyl meant to be scratched with? is it just noise?

can u scratch with belt drive turn tables?
krithiam 3 years ago
yeh but its a pain in the ass
rolley05 3 years ago
In reply to Krithiam, you can scratch with belt drive turntables... but it is seriously not recommended. You will lose all torque very quickly, leaving you with useless decks in need of repair. Direct drive turntables are the way to go, and can be picked up for a fraction more than belt driven turntables, and will last you a lot longer.
