I got self conscious when I came across a blog with Indian girls ratting on non-Indian girls wearing a saree because it was "sloppy", and wasn't pleated right. Okay, rule 1 of wearing a sari-put it on correctly. I hate seeing people not knowing how to do it right! Even Indian people mess it up and I'm like really? Did your mother not teach you?
Rule 2- Have your make up and hair done- this applies to all. Think of it like a prom dress. Would you put on a prom dress and not put on make up? No.
Rule 3- learn to pose- be a diva and don't leave your mouth open in pictures.
Rule 4- respect the sari. It's a beloved piece of my culture.
No one says Indian women are trying to be something they are not by wearing western clothes. I am white, with no Indian in my background, but the textiles of India are the most beautiful fabrics I have ever seen. I have always loved colourful clothes and the saree and salwar khameez are elegant and show off your shape in a really flattering way. I have a set of salwar khameez and when I wear it I never want to wear boring sweatshirt and jeans again. Culture exchange can go in both directions!

well im a mexican that live in the USA.. i have 3 sarees and i wear them for casual reunions and i have a fancier one for special occasions.. i rarely used dresses but i love my sarees.. they make me feel beautiful and sexy.. :P
Is there a proper way to wear the sari? What I mean is, I noticed some women had the fabric draped over their left shoulders, which is how I always thought it should be, yet, other women had it over their right shoulders. I'm a little embarrassed by my ignorance here, but does it matter? I want to make sure I wear it properly!!

@reva12 I think that sounds too extreme. The sari is still the dress of choice for women of any economic category in the far south. If you travel to rural areas anywhere in India except Punjab, J&K, a few mountainous areas and the northeast minus Assam, women there wear nothing but the sari. Also given the number of weddings that happen in India, even if the sari is replaced by the salwar kameez in Punjabized urban areas, its status as the ideal formal wear for women will guarantee its survival.

so for me wearing SK is a way of 'opting out' - also as someone who is short and hard to fit it is nice having clothing tailored to my body. The vertical lines of an SK or sari are the best thing for short women. I live in an area where there are lots of desis and don't get a second look most of the time - my husband and inlaws like the way I look and really who else matters.
Western clothing is only flattering on tall, thin women and is tailored to them, it is very easy to look bad in it if you don't meet the 'ideal' - also the sense of color and decoration is almost absent in Western clothing. I wear salwar kameez daily(am married to a desi guy if that's worth anything) and I am a gori. I wore a sari at my wedding but for everyday wear SKs are much more practical. The Western 'look' has become so dreary and limiting especially for women over 'a certain age'-cont.-

Right now, the majority of Indian women wear sarees. But it will soon go away. As the country modernises people will start to adopt more Western forms of dress for day-to-day clothing and the sari will be relegated to being a mainly ceremonial garment. It's already happened for the men. Few people wear traditional Indian male clothing except during ceremonies. It will also happen for women's clothing. In urban parts of India most young women have adopted Western clothing.

Okay, rule 1 of wearing a sari-put it on correctly. I hate seeing people not knowing how to do it right! Even Indian people mess it up and I'm like really? Did your mother not teach you?
Rule 2- Have your make up and hair done- this applies to all. Think of it like a prom dress. Would you put on a prom dress and not put on make up? No.
Rule 3- learn to pose- be a diva and don't leave your mouth open in pictures.
Rule 4- respect the sari. It's a beloved piece of my culture.

No one says Indian women are trying to be something they are not by wearing western clothes. I am white, with no Indian in my background, but the textiles of India are the most beautiful fabrics I have ever seen. I have always loved colourful clothes and the saree and salwar khameez are elegant and show off your shape in a really flattering way. I have a set of salwar khameez and when I wear it I never want to wear boring sweatshirt and jeans again. Culture exchange can go in both directions!

Is there a proper way to wear the sari? What I mean is, I noticed some women had the fabric draped over their left shoulders, which is how I always thought it should be, yet, other women had it over their right shoulders. I'm a little embarrassed by my ignorance here, but does it matter? I want to make sure I wear it properly!!

All of them look good in their saris. FYI, this way of wearing the garment came into existence only in the last century, introduced by the fashion icon, Maharani Gayatri Devi. She had an eye for class and elegance.
Shops in India, even in interior towns, do not carry the inventory they once did. (The wet diaper look) SK has become the national middle class uniform. Fortunately, the sari along with lots that is Indian is going to be preserved in the west, Youtube and in Indian regional movies. :)

@reva12 I think that sounds too extreme. The sari is still the dress of choice for women of any economic category in the far south. If you travel to rural areas anywhere in India except Punjab, J&K, a few mountainous areas and the northeast minus Assam, women there wear nothing but the sari. Also given the number of weddings that happen in India, even if the sari is replaced by the salwar kameez in Punjabized urban areas, its status as the ideal formal wear for women will guarantee its survival.

so for me wearing SK is a way of 'opting out' - also as someone who is short and hard to fit it is nice having clothing tailored to my body. The vertical lines of an SK or sari are the best thing for short women. I live in an area where there are lots of desis and don't get a second look most of the time - my husband and inlaws like the way I look and really who else matters.

Western clothing is only flattering on tall, thin women and is tailored to them, it is very easy to look bad in it if you don't meet the 'ideal' - also the sense of color and decoration is almost absent in Western clothing. I wear salwar kameez daily(am married to a desi guy if that's worth anything) and I am a gori. I wore a sari at my wedding but for everyday wear SKs are much more practical. The Western 'look' has become so dreary and limiting especially for women over 'a certain age'-cont.-

Lovely pictures. My best friend lent me one to wear to a family party of hers and I was also afraid I might offend someone but everyone there seemed really excited and I was so glad that I let her dress me. My friend explained to me that if Indian women can wear western dresses and not offend Americans, then Americans can certianly dress in sari without offending anyone. Everyone was very friendly and the food was delicious.

Right now, the majority of Indian women wear sarees. But it will soon go away. As the country modernises people will start to adopt more Western forms of dress for day-to-day clothing and the sari will be relegated to being a mainly ceremonial garment. It's already happened for the men. Few people wear traditional Indian male clothing except during ceremonies. It will also happen for women's clothing. In urban parts of India most young women have adopted Western clothing.

I, for example, for Irish stuff and Irish people have never once been like, "No! you don't belong here!" Some people really resonate with certain cultures.
