Wow.. lupit plang mag taglog nito.Pero mas magaling parin ung pag sulat nya, ilang ulit ako natawa sa bawat chapter ng Pacific Rims.. At mas madami pa ko ntutunan tungkol sa basketball history natin kesa sa ating sariling media mismo. It's a book worth reading by every hoop hungry Filipino. Props.
Ang galing mo. You even say "June" the proper Pinoy way ("djun" - medyo matigas na "j")! Mabuhay ka Rafe. I promise to buy a copy kahit wala akong alam sa basketball. :)
I remember a an American (white guy) driving a Jeepney passenger in Manila with PERFECT Filipino accent. Spoke to him in English and spoke back in PERFECT American accent.
bought this book last month.............................
and I totally enjoyed it, I finished it in less than a week which is rare for me since I tend to lose my interest in things very easily.
And I also think that it is Ironic that a man came from a land in which Philippine basketball has rarely been heard of has re-invigorated my love for Philippine hoops.
omg. ive never seen a foreign person to speak fluent tagalog. astig mo kuya! grear job on your book and thank you for seeing our passion in basketball and for spending your time in the phillipines just to knoe us better. kudos for you kuya rafe! :))
This guy should be commended by the Philippine Government. Can't believe someone would want to invest time and talent to write such book for Pinoys, and he ain't even Pinoy. I'll find your book here and buy i'll buy me some. Kudos Rafe! God Speed!
I admire him for fully immersing himself in his Filipino experience, teaching basketball and profoundly learning the language. He's got the dialect and even the tone down. I'm impressed.
Thank you for your unmeasurable efforts in writing this book. I wish I was in New York but if you are ever in Sacramento, I will be one of your supporter. I also applaud you in your knowledge of the Tagalog ///
3 things you will find unique in the philippines 1. barangay hall 2. statue of Dr. jose rizaL and 3. basketball court.

Hi Joe...I'm really inspired by how dedicated you are in your research about the Philippine basketball...and also by the fact that you had been absorbed by our country... You did a great job bro! @JoeStyle8 Hey bro, are you still here in the Philippines? By the way, thanks for uplifting our culture in spite of unfair judgments against us. You are our instrument, you made us all proud. Thanks dude! :P You're my idol! Keep it up!
You make me super proud to be Pinoy. Grabe, astig mo magTagalog, down to the fillers of "ah, at, ano", you got it down to a pat! ^_^ Maraming salamat Rafe, for loving my country enough to write about us and promote the book in our language. I just hope other Filipinos are just as proud of their race ^_^ Thumbs up!
ganun pala ang bigas ng bartholomew..bar-to-lo-me pala hahaha....thanks rafe..he kinda lose some of the grammars near the end but who cares? he speaks tagalog better than me!!! hahaha
ang galing mo, rafe! mas magaling ka pang mag-Tagalog kaysa sa akin! ROFL! nakakatuwa'ng marinig yung Tagalog mula sa isang dayuhang (foreigner) katulad mo. i was touched by your gesture to promote your book in tagalog. thanks too for taking the time and interest in the filipino's passion about basketball. i'm not an afficiondo myself but filipinos are really hooked on this game. as a matter of fact, there's an inter-village game going on in our place inspite of the rain! God bless you! V^.^
@JoeStyle8 were there any video effects over the recording? I really like the atmosphere of the video, its very warm. Were the lens and the cam bought separately? what are the prices XD? thanks by the way ^^
wehehehehe! ang galing mo naman! Binabati ka namin! Dasal namin ang iyong patuloy na tagumpay at maligayang buhay! i always wondered to those who can't speak/understand Tagalog, how does it sound?? like chinese and korean sound similar to me (cuz i can't distinguish the 2) as well as italian and spanish. what does tagalog sound like? when i say sound i mean its overall tone in a random crowd.
@crosseyed55 I've always wondered the same thing. I have no idea since I just hear it all in English in my head but I wonder. I hear a lot of round tones in the language.
@CUCProductions You're right. I tried to clarify this with an earlier comment. I should have said first book of its kind, in that it's narrative non-fiction that tries to explain the role of basketball in Philippine culture. There are excellent books already by Beth Celis and others, but they are more like coffee table books. My apologies for misspeaking.
Very impressive! You even got the accent down and the facial expressions do not look awkward at all!
Tagalog is my fourth language, I can understand it very well but speaking is hard since I never used it as a daily language but I learned it at formally school from a very young age.
I'm not a big supporter of Philippine basketball mainly because Philippines will never be globally competative at it, thus will never reap the benefits. We are just short people, we'll got owned by NBA players.
@Aruchinjiru i don't quit agree yes there are asians who are small but generalizing it would be wrong, there are filipinos huge filipinos who can go head to head with nba players. like danny ildefonso, yes philippines isnt't globally competitive but PH players do actually have games with NBA allstar players from time to time and they do pretty good i have to say.
One fact-check from the author: This is technically not the first book in the world about Philippine basketball. Pinoy sports writers like Beth Celis, Recah Trinidad and others have written coffee table books featuring the best players in Philippine history and the history of the PBA. I should have said this is the first book of its kind, that is, a narrative non-fiction book that tries to explain the role basketball plays in Philippine culture. Maraming maraming salamat sa inyong lahat!
@ermastarr Thanks! I'm still learning! Born and raised in NYC, but started studying Tagalog in 2005 just before I went to live in QC. It took me mga three years to get acceptable, and I'm still working at improving until now.
@Xen1zation Medyo mahal eh. 950 php at National. There are 1500 more copies arriving in the Philippines soon, so it should be easier to find. Still very hard to find outside of Manila. Sorry about that.
He is so good at speaking Tagalog, much respect! I wish you the best of luck with your book. I'm actually going to check this out at the Barnes and Nobles here in Virginia, very interesting. Thank you!
Hello there Bartholome I like the fact that you posted this video having a foreign visiting our country means that our country is safe and very hospitable. I am glad that you choose philippines for advocacy ( naks nosebleed hehe). I wanna see the book and actually read it where can I have a copy?
how does my mother have anything to do with this? she doesnt speak tagalog either, was that supposed to be some kind of insult? if so then you failed to offend me. you sir, are a tool.
@WheelieMaster85 Well no one is forcing you to do so, but you got to see that you are being a troll here. If you are so ashamed of being of Filipino descent then you shouldn't even be here in the first place right?
Are you kidding me? This is so awesome.

How much is the book I think I want to get a copy. Also is it available in All National Bookstore nationwide or just a selected NB branch?
Xen1zation 1 year ago
@Xen1zation Medyo mahal eh. 950 php at National. There are 1500 more copies arriving in the Philippines soon, so it should be easier to find. Still very hard to find outside of Manila. Sorry about that.

He is so good at speaking Tagalog, much respect! I wish you the best of luck with your book. I'm actually going to check this out at the Barnes and Nobles here in Virginia, very interesting. Thank you!

@dreanab It should be available there. If you can't find it in the story, there's always Amazon! Thanks so much!

im filipino but i have no desire to learn tagalog!!!
WheelieMaster85 1 year ago
@WheelieMaster85 Well no one is forcing you to do so, but you got to see that you are being a troll here. If you are so ashamed of being of Filipino descent then you shouldn't even be here in the first place right?
