  • Great playing man! nice guitar too!

  • @mechaman327 Many thanks!

  • nice pickin! thanks for sharing

  • @RustbeltRiot thanks man!

  • heh, I like you. You seem cool. Thx for the lesson. I can't belive I just heard of this type of playing.. sounds like a mix of blues, jazz, and country blu grass, no?

  • @tripwire2581 thank you for the kind words. I think you're right, kind of a melting pot. I love it. if you ever get to see someone play it live who is really good at it you'll really love it. I can't play like those guys but I have fun trying lol

  • Hey great country licks. Could you send me the tab.

  • @CountryHitsUSA if I ever find the time I will but I've been so busy giging and working that I have no free time. thanks for asking :)

  • this is very good man! our country band sure could use a picker like you!

  • @Dallascountryband thanks, I watched your video's. The guy playing lead was really good.

  • rad!!!!!

  • Hey man, think you could break down these licks a little more for a slow guy like me? Umm, especially the second one where you walk down on the C chord and then do the same lick on the G chord??

  • Hey man, think you could break down the 4 or 5 main licks in a little more detail for a slow guy like me? haha. I would greatly appreciate it. Well, the lick i'm having a hard time with is the second one. The lick where you walk down on the C chord and then do the same walk down lick on the G chord.

  • Dang, I never heard such good country tone out of a strat before.

  • thanks, us poor guys have to learn to cope lol

  • @thorpypoo well that is wat the strat was originally created for. they sound dece.:)

  • This guy can play and has some good stuff to offer, however, it's not clear on what he is doing. sounds good but not informative.

  • @globack I'll try and break it down if anyone asks. I need to figure out how to get tabs up there. Thank you for the comment

  • if its a partial chord the name will do, if you can give frets and strings that would be great

  • @gotatele I responded with a video. It's the one that 5:36 minutes. I hope it help, let me know

  • thanks for the advice, but if you could just give me the left hand shapes on the stuff it 1:50 or so i am sure it will still come out different, i really could use the help either way Happy New Year

  • I'm not sure how to tell you what the shapes are. Do you just mean what fret and strings that are playing?

  • thanks i am close but stupid and can't get it exactly

  • well you might not wanna get it to exact, I don't have the best technique.

jerry douglas once said that everyone has their own nitch, when you're trying to learn something from someone, don't try to get it exactly the same. Get it close and then give it your own personality. I thought that was good advice.

  • i sure wish you could tell me the partial chord shapes and at which frets at about 1:50 to 2:10 it is really a sound i would love to get right

  • I will, just give me a little time because we're going through inventory at work and it's taking way to much time lol. thanks

  • so incredibly grooovy!!! i did some chicken pickin over " He set me free" let me know what you think.

  • dude you're awesome but it sounds like you hate life, lol.

  • haha, I do.....just kidding

  • haha if you do, I would expect for you to be in a completely different style of music.

  • This is a classic players strat. mim. At least thats what it looks like from here. Great guitar for the price.

  • a friend, great job. What kind of amp are ya using?

  • it's a cheap Peavey Express.

  • dude man u rock

    we needa play again

  • is that a david gilmore strat?

  • Can you explain this lick with more details? I didn't get the one part with the chord lick... anyway, Good sound Bro~

  • not sure which lick you're talking about

  • Licks with kinda double stop?

if u don't mind, could u explain those chords?

  • I need some lessons from you! Haha Sounds Great!

  • my favorite chicken picker is Albert Lee

  • Yes, Albert Lee is amazing. I first heard him when I was a kid, I couldn't believe he was playing that on a Music Man.

  • Great Job! The only people not likely to appreciate your arrangement, in Chicken Picken style are kids. Whether that be chronological

or a lack of maturation. Most of them if they play at all will end up sounding like one trick ponies, that every one gets sick of hearing, for some they will come to realize what came to flavor their favorite bands. and

say wow i should have listened to more Robert Johnson or maybe Doc Watson, or Brent mason.

  • Well, I've never seen a strat as a country sounding guitar as pointed out by aljosh down there. I think the word or adjective you're looking for is more along the lines of blues, jazz, funk stuff like that.. You want a country twange guitar(yeah everybody sees this coming)get a Tele..

  • No the word or adjective is not blues, jazz, funk or anything but chicken pickin or country. I did not play blues or jazz licks. These are licks I've heard from Brent Mason, Kelly Back etc. It doesn't matter what guitar they are played on. Obviously I'd rather play them on a telecaster but I don't play in a country band. I'm not going to buy a tele just to put a video on you tube.

  • I wasn't referring to your playing; I was reffering to the fact that homey called it a country guitar. And a strat is anything but... So don't sit there and cop an attitude chickin' pickin'...

  • I wasn't coping an attitude. I thought the statement was directed to me so I was explaining why I called it chicken pickin

  • My appologies...

  • Great picking and generous of you to share your techniques.

  • thanks

  • Man, that's really cool, I can't see how to use it in I'll Fly Away, which I play often. I'd like to see you do more with the actual song. you're one fanstic player. God Bless You!!

  • Thanks. I think I'll try and put this up with a three piece band if I can find time. You see it that way.

  • I wonder what you mean by "you see it that way"? lost me....

  • Sorry, that was me not paying attention to what I was typing. I mean when you hear the solo played over the chords with a band, you'll see how it fits the song.

  • Well slap my butt and call me Skippy.

    (Actually, don't.)

=) So I think you should whip somma this out on Sundays. It'd make me smile.

  • Wow, chicken pickin' on youtube that actually has style and soul! No offense to any of the super fast pickers out there (they're great technicians) but I'd rather hear this. Your playing and arrangement would definitely be an asset to a band.

    Great job

  • one word

    WOW

  • Maybe you should try Di Marzio Red Velvet in bridge, it would give total twang and tele sound to normal strat.Anyway strat is also one good country guitar without any mods.

  • thanks aljoshaa, I'll check it out.

  • Nice chops, Id like to see you do it on a Tele.

  • I know exactly what you mean about not being able to hear the difference. I play acoustic and it was a good long while before I developed any kind of taste on the guitars I was trying out.

I have a Digitech GNX1, I might be able to imitate the sound of the tube amp. I know there are a bunch of different amp sounds and options on there.

    Thanks for the advice!

  • That's really cool! I'm an acoustic flatpicker mostly but I'm thinking about buying an electric. Since I don't know anything about electrics, are there any decent electric guitars under $500?

  • Yes Authorized77 there are. I bought mine for under 500 and it's American. The style of music you're going to play will help determine what guitar you should buy. For example, I'm playing country on my strat but if I had a choice I'd be playing a tele. I've just been able to mimic the country sound. I can only afford one guitar so I play a guitar that's a good all around guitar. What styles are you going to play?

  • More country style than rock. Are the tonal qualities of Telecasters and Strats really that different, or is it a playability thing?

  • Hey man thanks for the great riffs! I'm a professional jazz/ funk player here in NYC and i'v been loving the country stuff and been trying to learn it. On the next video you do could you show the licks more up close and maybe give us the notes? Looking foward to yr next post !

  • Maaaane!!!!!!

    That was so PHAT!!!

    Dude!

    Translated

    That was really good Brother!

    :)

    Stay blessed!

  • hey dude, thanks for sharing your licks, that's very cool.

  • love the tone man. thats one of the most tele-like sounding strats ive ever heard man! are you using a compressor on this? if so, what kind?

  • I'm sorry I think the comments are out of order. Yes, I'm using a Boss compressor the CS-3

  • hi nice sound may i ask what pickups you have in your strat and what amp you are using,,thanks

  • thanks danny. the pickups are just from the factory. and the amp is just a cheap peavey express. neither one are right for the style but I've used them so long I can tweek them to get a good sound.

  • thanks for the fast reply!!

so what strat is it a usa standard? deluxe? or mexican made? thanks......

  • It's a USA Holiday Edition. As far as it being a holiday edition I really don't know the significance of that. It seems to be lighter than other US strats that I've played. I bought it new around thirteen years ago.

  • You all should check out clinonious' latest posting on chicken pickin'. It is awesome. Oh wait...that's right he hasn't posted anything new in 8 stinkin' months. What a loser. lol

  • awesome pickin man. try a tele. those licks work well on a tele as well as that nice strat you have.

  • thanks telerocker. I plan on getting a tele. I haven't found the right one yet. I just love the fill of my strat. I think play a tele will take some getting use too.

  • Good job, looking forward to more from you

  • Sounds best if you don't try to overdo it with the speed.

  • Hey man, nice stuff! Please do more...and if ya could slow it down. LOL Im tryin to get the hang of the hybrid pickin and its not easy, you do a good job..appreciate it

  • cool playing, is that a strat with blocked tremolo? what strings gauges do you use? are you a pedal steel player?

  • hey, sorry I forgot to reply. No it's not blocked. The string are a medium gage. I do play steel but not alot. I enjoyed your videos. You've got a great plucking sound.

  • Really nice, dude!

  • Hey, clintonious !

I really enjoyed that one. You got it!

But i'd say you'd better grab a Tele - the one and only for that kinda stuff. ;-)

    Greeets from Germany

  • thanks, your right I want one, some day I will.

  • really good man!

  • So is the Doug Seven's video worth buying. I checked it out once before. That man is a God on guitar.LOL! I use an X-Series Didgitech compressor and for some reason I don't get that sound I'm looking for. I hear a lot on the Boss pedals, I'm sure I will pick one up. Thanks for the response. I will get back with ya.

  • nice

  • hey clint that's great give us some more please!!

how about slowing them down a bit so guys like me can catch'em..anybody that would slam your playing are people that should show us how to play better and probably can't, to many metal heads on here not enough real pickers like you

  • Nice licks man! I have been playing Blues and classic Rock for years but sometimes have to play country. Been brushing up on my country licks. Hope you don't mind if I borrow a few of these.

  • I enjoyed that man, Good job.

    Not bad at all.

    ~Doug Seven

  • Thanks Doug, that means alot coming from you.

  • Great playing man! I have been turned on to the whole chickin pickin style guitar. I'm getting good. What effects are you using and how you got them set if you don't mind me asking? Great job

  • thanks alot. I'm just using a little reverb and most importantly, a boss compressor. The compressor is set up from left to right (11 o'clock, 11, 9 and 12). I'm using a cheap peavey express amp that I use to play my steel through. The mid's and highs are cranked way up. But that just depends on the room. Check out Doug Seven's website, You can get a video online that will show you how to get the best sound out of your gear. I'm just trying to get close to his sound. thanks again.
