Ha. Some of these posts are ridiculous. I lived out of a backpack for 7 1/2 years. If you are sensible and use your head you learn where to camp to be safe,and get good sleep. You generally make more money asking for it than you will working a menial job. If you want to go just go and see what you learn!

@zeroDOTjon I sampled that life for a few months. Fuckin boring. Sitting around BS'ing, getting drunk and high with strangers, telling stories, getting hassled by cops, mostly just sitting around waiting for the next opportunity to eat, wash, sleep. Sleep is the worst part. You never get enough. Feet get kicked by cops in the middle of the night, keep you moving to the next spot,. next spot, next spot.

These guys seem like posers to me.

I have a home business now, much more fun.

@jwallbanger there's just something crazy inside me urging to go, and yet something else wants to stay, inside the comfort, smug drive to the office, etc. I dunno. I think getting drunk in the streets is definitely the dead end, but travelling the world mindfully is an education in the best sense of the word. I dunno tho, good question. I guess I have a month's vacation coming up, live and see. But it's all one life, flowing like a river. Peace man.

but even if it's a waste of time let me tell you a little more of what i found out. first of all, that romantic feeling of freedom you're longing for wears off very quickly, especially when you've run out of cash and you realize that without it there's very little you can do about anything. @diantonovich also, you realize that the people you meet on the street, hang with, they don't care about you anymore than your phony ass coworkers did. and most of them will fuck you over as soon as you give them the chance. you quickly learn how little power you have in the world. you feel very vulnerable, people are eyeing you everywhere, cops see you as prey, it's hard to sleep because you're wide open to get robbed. @diantonovich then there's the bugs, the filth, the lack of bathing, shitting, and changing opportunites. very little privacy to be had anywhere.

eventually you start ending up in jail, just for bullshit reasons like hanging out in the wrong area. they'll make up a stupid reason to charge you or just B & R you to get you out of a certain area where someone was feeling annoyed by your presence. you realize how people see you as trash and to be swept off the street, justly or not.

@diantonovich I highly recommend you do a lot of research before you try it. Best scenario is to have a van or a small RV. At least a car. There's lots of websites about car living. That will make a HUGE difference.

Even non-homeless people dumpster dive for food and there's a lot of perfectly good food to be found in the trash. There are free day centers for washing up. But every service for the homeless is a trek somewhere and crowded too.

@diantonovich Personally, I think if your clock-punching life is bumming you out, going hobo is not the answer. It looks like freedom but you quickly learn that it is not. I think it appeals to the lazy more than anything.

I finally found the freedom I was looking for in owning my own business. Every day is exciting. I get to be as creative as I like, I make my own hours and my own rules. I work in front of the tube in my underwear, no more taking shit from a prick boss.

@jwallbanger Thanks for your thoughts. I generally agree. I LIKE my job, own office, boss is remote. Have my own business on the side. Not a dream job, but the conditions are chill. Freedom, I think, is not about just being a hobo. That's more like sloth and apathy. I never understood why homeless people congregate in the slummy parts of big cities instead of either hanging out in hip college towns or even trying to set something up outside the urban.
