This is too peppy and I don't like the swing feel, it's wrong for the tune and gives it a cheerful feeling. The best version I've heard better than Donny Hathaway's classic, is Boris Titulaer, a white dutch kid who looks about 19 in the live video that's here on Youtube. You will cry - check it out.
I get that his voice is unique but surely not the best..there are too many far better versions by much better singers. Spend some time listening on i Tunes..

I couldn't agree more...that is by far the best version...I wish someone would put it on You Tube...it is from the album "For the Duration:" which has great WW II songs.
i have to say without question nat king cole recorded the ultimate version of this song , i can only assume a lot of people out there haven't heard it . it's fabulous , and very heartfelt . fred manchester
also not my opinion that this is the best version,it is a good version of a voice not so comfortable in this genre rod does phrase like billy holiday sometimes and he does a good version, but i prefer johnny hartmans version
"This may only be a dream, we come and go like a ripple on a stream." After I get off work I'm going home to my wife with flowers and dinner to her favorite restaurant. I'm yours eternally Vanita.
my favorites are by nina simone and donny hathaway. hathaway's is definitive as far as i'm concerned. simone's is ghostly and evocative in a ways that no one else's is.
Maureen1938, that makes the two of us. I am also a very big fan of Rod. I am able to listen to all 4 volumes without stop and never get bored. He is a great singer. My favourite
Lovely cover of a truly romantic song, thanks. Rent "Mrs. Palfrey at the Claremont", because this song plays a prominent part of the film (if you haven't already).
I sing this version at Karaoke. It is the one that is available, along with the Nat King Cole version the the 1960's. I prefer this version. I have the 1934 recording on Buff Bluebird w/Ernie Holst;'s Ochestra if you want to get urtext, and Stewart's version comes the closest in Lyric intensity.
I adore Rod, but i think he should have stayed away from most of the standards he recorded....of course it's all about taste, but for me this is so far from the best version of this great standard that it may as well not even be in the race; infact for me this version is quite the opposite.
no matter who's version singing this song, as long they sang from their hearts & soul will be remembered by people and song lovers like me. It's the song that matters not the singer for all we know!
I must say i totally disagree that this is the best version of this song. I believe that Donnie Hathaway's version is miles ahead of this version. Donnie made his version the standard for singing this song by which no one can hold a candle to! Not even his daughter comes close.

Nice, but not a patch on Nat King Cole.

Great piano rendition. Very natural-sounding pitch-correction on the vocals, too - you can barely hear it ! Great job, Rod!

Barbra Streissand's version in Prince of Tides is the best version I've ever heard of this song. But Rod's one is lovely, too.

The Rosemary Clooney version is better - not just the singing but trhe orchestration. It comes at the end of the film "Mrs Palfrey at the Claremont".

I prefer Vinton's version, even Cole's rendition than this. Stewart's and Streisand's are by far the weakest, if not the worst the I've heard.

Actually, Rosemary Clooney does the best rendition of this song.
Rod Stewart does a very nice job, though.

@ioedge I think Rod Stewart does a good job. Barbara Dickson does a great job!
