Who gives a fuck what amg says or anyone else for that matter. As long as you enjoy it, let the rest of the sheeple writhe in Bieber and Britney and whatever other garbage that sells alot today. I'd much rather see bands in a small venue anyway, just like the 4-5 times I've seen the SWANS!!!
At the time that it was released many Swans fan thought The Burning World to be sacrilege. It didn't sound like their previous work and was ... gack! ... folky. But of course time has proven how brilliant and ahead of their time (and their fans) they were. This album is a masterpiece.
Well stated. I was one of those shouting, "Heresy!" As time passed and I got older, this album really grew on me. Like a fine wine, it's aged well and only now it's subtle complexities have revealed themselves profound.
this album falls flat against the later similar outputs. The major label almost shattered the band. The media found the perfect prade.Good thing they're on their own again. The new album is full of rich moments, as for this one ain't too bad, just incomplete and rushed
There was way too much hope and resolution in 'The Burning World' for the typical SWANS fan, I guess.
LOL
However, this song always stood out.
It was like an old English folk song, Like those that bands like Pentangle used to sing.
When I was younger, I used to go to an old war ammunition tunnel, buried beneath a mountain and sing my lungs out in the darkness. There was so much echo and reverb. the sound bounced off the concrete surfaces sending vibrations through my chest.
@MaitreDJ That's a nice personal story, but it sounds too uncannily like the cover of Gira's 'Drainland' solo effort or the dust jacket of his book 'The Consumer' to be optimistic. I'm with you on the Pentangle comparison, however. It's possible to like SWANS (even the early lacerating stuff), Pentagle, Davey Graham, Tim Buckley, John Martyn, the String Band & NIck Drake together. 'Cuz it's all all GREAT.
i was introduced to this album (The Burning World) at a very dark time in my life, it is the only CD i have by swans, never could get into anything else they did, over twenty years later and it still takes me there, im sure that must count for something, not a very well liked Album amongst Swans followers but i think it`s the best music they ever did, each to there own.......:0)
Very Grateful to hear this record again, Thank you. Think I have a tape of this concert I recorded. Anyone have advice on how to upload a tape cassette?
Glad you liked it =) Presumably you can buy some sort of equipment that plugs into your computer and rips from tapes to mp3. I'm ashamed to say, though, that I torrented most of my Swans, so I'm not actually sure how that works or what you would need to use.
You need a program for your computer that records input to the sound card (Roxio Easy CD Creator, or Audacity (Audacity is free DL) Then Just save the music into any format you prefer.
if you purchase from young god records they give you presents. ie old tapes as cds

I like this, but I prefer the noisy industrial stuff.

@macleodponeage Only one of the reasons Swans are so, so beyond incredible. Versatility. And all of it incredible.

and 'Sometimes I wish I were an eagle' by BILL CALLAHAN or

@Fishlydavidson Not gonna lie, I actually like The Burning World a lot. I just think of it as what country should be.
