I'm planning on shooting a movie using both cameras. Will I be able to use the hd video from the d90 in the Premiere pro 1.5 timeline with the dvx footage? Also, should I record the sound with the dvx or with a Zoom h4n? Thanks.
I think a even more fair comparison would be if you would use a PAL Model of the DVX100, with more Lines (bigger image) and better colors. Remember. NTSC also stands for "Never The Same Color".
The depth of field comparison was interesting and of course the Nikon wins due to the bigger image sensor, but looses at the "motion" comparison. Rolling shutter is purely unacceptable.
IDK about your settings but recently my DVX picture has looked like the D90 in your video and also it works OK in low light. The only problem is that I can't get the audio to be as good as people are saying....
Hey there! Nice Video. One question I have was, what were your compression settings for the DVX100 up resed to HD? If you take a look at my Channel I have a couple of Vids using my AG DVX100b Rendered in 1280 x 720 and I'm getting a 2.35:1 aspect. I've used Mark Apsolon Tutorial, but I can't seem to get mine working correctly, any tips would be great!
Took a quick look at the first video on your channel. you need to right click on your footage in the timeline, and select video event pan/crop. in this box change the aspect ratio of your footage so that it takes up the entire 16:9 window and then render from there.
Correct, and in the future this can be fixed by shooting with the camera in 4:3 mode and then cropping in post. There are additional options on the DVX100B for recording with an anamorphic squeeze you may want to look into that as well.
ah thats what I do, I change the (Maintain aspect ration to No) and in the preview render box, it shows it fill the screen, but the final render I'm still receiving border lines.
make sure that stretch video to fill output frame is selected on the rendering prefs, also make sure that your rendering settings have a pixel aspect ratio of 1.000 square on the video rendering prefs page.
weird. if you are doing that and rendering out to a WMV file, there shouldnt be a problem. if you are rendering to another format it could be causing the problem. without seeing it that's all that ocmes to mind.
A lot of people dis the video quality, but I love it :). My only 2 complains is the jello and avi. Do you think it would be possible for Nikon to change the compression to MPEG with a firmware? I know jello couldn't be fixed because it's common in CMOS sensors lol.
i love the d90. I find the audio usable but im really waiting to see how you get your audio. Put that vid up soon. I'm gonna be filming some things with friends and tonight on the highway i filmed the cars passing by and i got amazing results. I wanted just the car lights and thats what i got and the cars werent even visible other than that i filmed some stores that were litten up and they looked great!
i think that the dvx has nicer colours in this video

Shooting video on a DSLR is for homeless people.

@pjwheelr DVX100 has excellent XLR inputs with uncompressed sound. I've used DVX100 audio live on a nationally broadcast concert.

Im meant to be getting a DVX soon but this has put me off a little, the colours look bad, and the quality is soft, i wanted something sharp.
Mmm

@XILCwalkIX The camera can be adjusted. You have a lot of different image settings that you can adjust the way you want. More soften or more sharp.

you can get the colors to match the d90, you had the film mode in 24p, instead, change it to 60i and adjust the colors but filming in 60i

I'm using Sony Vegas 8.c Pro for my rendering.

Right. So what I went ahead and did, was start on a whole new project.
1) I made sure the settings were correct
2)I put my media on the time line, went to the event pan/crop and changed maintain aspect ratio to no. (the Preview window shows the letter box fill)
3) I go to my rendering settings, I made sure stretch video to film output frame size was checked.
4) I made sure the Pixel ratio was 1.000(Square)
and I'm still getting letterboxes, I must be missing something somewhere.

I think Nikon could fix alot of the problems with a firmware update. Lets hope they do.

D90 at night is amazing! Will try to get the audio segment up soon. thanks!

um do you know where i can find those filters you were talking about?
44racerangels182 2 years ago
the D90 is pretty much the equivalent of the canon 40D RIght. Just Canon lacks the video.
paintballguy113 2 years ago
I have an Xti as well and the D90 is a huge upgrade over that camera. Probably not as much of an upgrade over a 40D
