I remember watching this on TV live. It was probably the most disheartening thing I have ever witnessed on any news channel, especially since you were witnessing a natural disaster happening live, destroying anything in it's path.
I hope Tuscaloosa and everybody has recovered and still recovering are safe and ready for perhaps another year of bad weather :/
I was traveling from Georgia to Nevada 2 days after this and we went up 78 North from Birmingham, I've lived in Georgia all my life and seen a lot of tornado damage in my life, the damage from this monster was off the scale.
They say the great Tri-State tornado of 1925 didn't look like a tornado but like a rolling mass of dark clouds, and thus people didn't realize what was happening until too late. I'm guessing this is what the Tri-State tornado looked like.
Not sure what you mean by "phides and ferb". The "Tri-State" tornado hit Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana (hence its name) in 1925 and killed almost 700 people.
I live 2 miles south of where this footage was taken, the inflow winds on the south side of Red Mt were amazing to feel and scary. I am also a ham radio operator and I am so very proud of the work done all the local hams in the weeks after this storm. Alabama is recovering and making its way back. Thanks for all you prayers and support keep them coming!
i visited tuscaloosa on a road trip this summer only a few weeks ago and just to see the damage is unbelievable... my thoughts and prayers are still with everyone effected by this tornado.
I saw this when it actually happened and I live a couple of counties down from Montgomery. I feel so bad for all of those people. I know their gonna be alright and we're all gonna get back up on our feet again
Wow, it's pretty rare to see the Weather Channel cover current weather these days. I expected a rerun of "When Weather Changed History" to be on instead.
@JordanTessler Those look like truly amazing programs. I have a few questions if you don't mind.
I download both the GRLevel3 and the AnalystEdition. I noticed that the AnalystEdition has the 3D modeling which looks really cool. However, when I installed my version I was unable to click "site" and change my location. Right now I'm stuck looking at the southeast.
@joestl314 Analyst is the only one with the 3d modeling :(
I can't explain the radar site problem. I had the same problem so I went back to, tested and then purchased level 3. 3 gets the job done, just at a lower-resolution. You can still see hook echos, debris balls, hail cores and other features but not at the level of detail Forbes uses.
@JordanTessler The more I'm using GRLevel3 the more i'm liking it. Right now I'm tracking the hail storm in Nebraska. Looks pretty intense.
I noticed that Analyst says it's offline in the bottom right hand corner. After searching though the settings I haven't been able to connect the program to the internet. I'm thinking this would probably solve alot of the problems we're having. lol
THey have a forum so I'm going to do some research there. Wish me luck
There is no difference between an F5 and an EF5. An F5 is 260+mph and an EF5 is 200+mph. The issue was that they were over estimating wind speeds with F5's and it really only took 200+mph to completely obliterate a solid brick house. PRO FACT OF DA DAY.
My heart goes out to all y'all in Alabama. I got cousins there.
The only part about this video that bothered me was when the meteorologist said "Get the camera to pan out." A camera doesn't pan out, it ZOOMS out and PANS side to side. ...sorry.
@talladegajunkie1439 this almost surpasses the Super Outbreak and Jim Cantore has been at TWC for a quater of a century and he said he'd never seen anything like it
@GAdawgsfan93 This outbreak may surpass that one as the most costly tornado outbreak in history. 1999 was before the F-Scale was upgraded to the new EF-Scale. Don't try to compare the two. This one also killed MANY more people.
This sucks :/ I was so scared yesterday because it was so windy here in NY like 50 mph (i'm sorta exageratting) and we had a fire in our school and we had to stand outside and the clouds were going by soo fast. we had to get in a bus .. the power was out.. rocks were flying up and hitting people.. God damn I'm glad I'm safe.
1:35 "...south of downtown on a large hill...I guess you could call it a mountain....."
HELLO IDIOT! If you are gonna storm chase and report what you are seeing, STUDY YOUR LOCALE! That "large hill" is called RED MOUNTAIN!
GET A MAPand STUDY the terrain before you report anything!

Where would I find this type of doppler radar? The amount of detail in these images is amazing!
I'm so sick of seeing them same cheesing looking doppler radar on local news stations.
Any advice would be great!

@joestl314
google search grlevelx
media stations use AnalystEdition
weather enthusiasts use GRlevel3 or 2
