OK. Honestly, say what you like about other games. But remember to set the limits. Unfortunately he/she got all raging and just started with an argument with someone. Also, the other one was wrong to write those comments.
Overall, I was disappointed by both as a MOTHER fan.
Cloud may have been sad over Aeris's death, but flint here was devastated. Cloud was like "Oh no, my girlfriend is dead lets kill sepheroth out of rage LOL" Flint probably couldn't even process this news. His mind was filled with sorrow and rage, loosing the mother of his children and his own beloved.

I knew just about every plot point of Mother 3 before I played it. Every part hit my heart like a hammer. Knowing how the plot pans out doesn't lessen the impact of such a great game. I'll play it again in a few months, and I know that it will be just as amazing as the first time.

Pokey=Porky. Giygas killed for nothing. Hinawa was killed by Reconstructed Drago.
Claus wanted to avenge Hinawa and was brainwashed into the Masked Man. Lucas's Franklin Badge reflected the Masked Man's lightning, which soon after killed him. This means that Pokey's actions killed 3 people and things for no reason at all. :'( F*CKING POKEY!!!!!!!!!!!!

i read somewhere that bronson's lack of tact stems from the fact that the people of tazmily don't know of tragedy, thus they don't know how to act around it. that is why he is as blunt as he is. i think this is referenced elsewhere in the game too. interesting point, i think.
the animation in this scene (the whole game, actually) is incredible.

Actually, its true. (thumbs up) Bad American advertising made Earthbound flop. The slogan for EB in the US was "This game stinks" which was meant to imply it had "smelly jokes" suck as Master Belch and other potty humor jokes. In Japan the slogan was something like "A game you, your mother and even grandfather can enjoy"
Terrible ad campaign. I bought the original EB in the huge box with the strategy guide though. EB is one of my favorite games of all time.
RocmanRaz: I played the game back when it came out in 1995 and then received it for Christmas later that year. I still have the game as well as the strategy guide, but I no longer have the box.
A very sad and dramatic scene, very unexpected and unbelievable when I first read it and didn't think the game was serious, but when I realized someone seriously died, it was a real shocker.
Having played Earthbound, which is a lot more innocently comical and light-hearted, I never thought I'd see this kind of scene in a sequel. But now I realize this is what sets the stage for the plot of the game.
I really wish you came up with a different title though. You could've called it "Hinawa's Fate"
thats just to make it more dramatic. if youve played the game without knowing hinawa dies ahead of time, its really stunning, and just how it all happens at once and how sad music starts to play, its enough to make you cry.
Hell, even if you know Hinawa dies, the scene is so well done that it'll stir something in your gut. The drama here is extremely palpable; it feels raw and real enough to make the artificial woes of two-dimensional sprites move you.
This, among many other reasons, is why I can safely say that Mother is one of the best game series on the planet, despite never having played the games and thriving off of spoilers.

Shigesato Itoi wanted to make the situation very tense, somewhat lighten it but also make it dark at the same time. That is why he did the dialogue the way he did. I played thru this in raw japanses reading a translation the first time...so I didn't grasp it all at first, but once I caught up in the dialogue I was like...OMFG...and shed a tear.

One of the reasons why I think this 'death' is one of the most effective as far as eliciting an actual emotional response in a video game is the extremely sneaky and counter intuitive way that it is done, namely right at the beginning. Reading some of these comments I think some people fail to realize that Hinawa's end actually permeates and informs the growth of the characters, namely their directions (or in Flints case, lack thereof). And it hits close to home because of how real it is.
Aeris' death is NOTHING compared to Hinawa's. Hell, Alys death in Phantasy Star 4 was better.
This is the 2nd death in a game that made me cry. Because of Hinawa's death Lucas become stronger. He becomes even stronger than his father ever was. As you play through, you see lost Flint becomes because of Hinawa's death, until the very end @ the last battle.
I don't think it was just Hinawa's death that pushed him over the edge. I think he could've recovered from that one, but what really pushed him was losing Claus so soon after losing his wife. Just the fact that he knew Hinawa was dead was atleast reassuring. He never knew what happened to Claus, and just the small, small chance that he could be okay is probably what tore him up from the inside.
I'll bet if he knew exactly what happened to Claus that the game would be alot more about Flint then Claus. Because all Flint wanted to do was find Claus, but Lucas had to save the whole world. If Flint knew joining Lucas's team meant saving the world AND finding Claus, then the game would be alot different, and easier considering Boney would probably be replaced by Flint.
@sayastra Yeah true. Claus' was more tragic because not only did he die, but Porky had the nerve to take his corpse and turn him into a "Chimera" super soldier. The final dialogue where Hinawa comes to the boys when they are fighting (or lack of fighting in Lucas' case) and says "You must be tired" shows the true tragedy of the brothers.

The first time I played this game I thought it was going to be a cheerful, entertaining game I could play with my 6 year old brother.
To this day, I still can't play it with him without breaking into tears.

Flint must be REALLY kind to stay Bronson's friend... considering how stupid he is... I also like how Bronson doesn't notice that Flint escaped the prison... When he OWNS it...

actually, the drago tooth is required to kill the mecha drago, if you don't use it, all your attacks do one damage. which is why claus lost the first time

i read somewhere that bronson's lack of tact stems from the fact that the people of tazmily don't know of tragedy, thus they don't know how to act around it. that is why he is as blunt as he is. i think this is referenced elsewhere in the game too. interesting point, i think.
the animation in this scene (the whole game, actually) is incredible.

Actually, its true. (thumbs up) Bad American advertising made Earthbound flop. The slogan for EB in the US was "This game stinks" which was meant to imply it had "smelly jokes" suck as Master Belch and other potty humor jokes. In Japan the slogan was something like "A game you, your mother and even grandfather can enjoy"
Terrible ad campaign. I bought the original EB in the huge box with the strategy guide though. EB is one of my favorite games of all time.

A very sad and dramatic scene, very unexpected and unbelievable when I first read it and didn't think the game was serious, but when I realized someone seriously died, it was a real shocker.
Having played Earthbound, which is a lot more innocently comical and light-hearted, I never thought I'd see this kind of scene in a sequel. But now I realize this is what sets the stage for the plot of the game.
I really wish you came up with a different title though. You could've called it "Hinawa's Fate"

thats just to make it more dramatic. if youve played the game without knowing hinawa dies ahead of time, its really stunning, and just how it all happens at once and how sad music starts to play, its enough to make you cry.

Hell, even if you know Hinawa dies, the scene is so well done that it'll stir something in your gut. The drama here is extremely palpable; it feels raw and real enough to make the artificial woes of two-dimensional sprites move you.
This, among many other reasons, is why I can safely say that Mother is one of the best game series on the planet, despite never having played the games and thriving off of spoilers.

Shigesato Itoi wanted to make the situation very tense, somewhat lighten it but also make it dark at the same time. That is why he did the dialogue the way he did. I played thru this in raw japanses reading a translation the first time...so I didn't grasp it all at first, but once I caught up in the dialogue I was like...OMFG...and shed a tear.

One of the reasons why I think this 'death' is one of the most effective as far as eliciting an actual emotional response in a video game is the extremely sneaky and counter intuitive way that it is done, namely right at the beginning. Reading some of these comments I think some people fail to realize that Hinawa's end actually permeates and informs the growth of the characters, namely their directions (or in Flints case, lack thereof). And it hits close to home because of how real it is.

Aeris' death is NOTHING compared to Hinawa's. Hell, Alys death in Phantasy Star 4 was better.
This is the 2nd death in a game that made me cry. Because of Hinawa's death Lucas become stronger. He becomes even stronger than his father ever was. As you play through, you see lost Flint becomes because of Hinawa's death, until the very end @ the last battle.

I don't think it was just Hinawa's death that pushed him over the edge. I think he could've recovered from that one, but what really pushed him was losing Claus so soon after losing his wife. Just the fact that he knew Hinawa was dead was atleast reassuring. He never knew what happened to Claus, and just the small, small chance that he could be okay is probably what tore him up from the inside.

I'll bet if he knew exactly what happened to Claus that the game would be alot more about Flint then Claus. Because all Flint wanted to do was find Claus, but Lucas had to save the whole world. If Flint knew joining Lucas's team meant saving the world AND finding Claus, then the game would be alot different, and easier considering Boney would probably be replaced by Flint.

@sayastra Yeah true. Claus' was more tragic because not only did he die, but Porky had the nerve to take his corpse and turn him into a "Chimera" super soldier. The final dialogue where Hinawa comes to the boys when they are fighting (or lack of fighting in Lucas' case) and says "You must be tired" shows the true tragedy of the brothers.
