I think it's analogous to flight. A rare adaptation that exploits another aspect of the environment (in flight, aerodynamics, in this, a "loophole") for massive evolutionary benefit.
Is there a version of the software for Macs? I've a pretty good Mac sitting unused and would love to run a creature...
@Sandcat87 You can run it through Wine pretty decently (At least on Linux. Mac should not be much different). Though, I recommend saving frequently as it DOES lock up if you're unlucky.
its not really cheating. its just exploiting a factor in the environment. and the code itself is a factor. it's really beautiful how evolution can drive such " clever" ( incorrect term, but i lack any other way of describing it) methods to overcome problems.
@maxk322 You're quite right. "cheat" isn't quite the right word for it. On the other hand, I've seen it used by AI researchers in various papers about 3D creature evolution (not my software, other systems) to describe the same kinds of problems. Maybe "loopholer" would be better than "cheater", or maybe "sneak".
Yay, i downloaded the program, i've made an evolution that is the furthest distance, without jumping, (equally as important) its on generation 28, and going really well, the best fitness is 159.4, that was in generation 26, the average keeps getting higher (i think :) ) , thanks so much for the link, brilliant program :)
Feel free to send me creature_00000.creature and the .evolution file from the final generation if the creature is interesting. I'll add it to my queue for future recording and YT posting. Or, if you make your own recording, let me know and I'll link to it on the project web site.
I also have one that shake a lot. It's a little mouse like speedy creature, evolved for distance over flat terrain. It is curently at generation 57, and has a max fittnes score of over 63. (The distance is scaled.) It is made of only 4 parts, and 2 different kinds of parts. Can this be cheating too? The framerate is to high for me to see how it moves, but it looks very unnatural.
By the way, did you ever evolve your "gorilla walker" further? If not, I hope you do. If you don't plan to, I hope you can send him to me sometime and I will ;)
