@az932 This was the # 1 song on my birth date, but this is the first time I've heard it! I like it, upbeat & happy. I wonder if my mother listened to it when I was a baby :)
Thanks for this Shane. 60 years ago when I was 10 years old my mother and I would dance to this very 78 on such a gramophone as yours. Its winderful to hear it again!
Hi Jennifer. I uploaded a few more Evelyn Knight songs earlier today, including a duet with Dick Haymes. I don't have Bottoms & Bows though. I do have buttons & bows by Dinah Shore.
in fact, paula watson (a black singer) recorded this song for the indie label "supreme", reached #2 on R&B charts and #6 on pop charts. decca records (a more mainstream label) immediately got evelyn knight (a white singer) to produce a cover, in which she copied watson's singing so precisely.
musical experts couldn't tell the difference between their voices! knight's version reached #1 on pop charts. supreme tried suing decca records on accounts of "stolen" vocal style and arrangement, but the judge ruled in favour of decca records (larger label) stating that musical style is not covered under copyrights, rather the sheet music was. the author actually collected royalties from both... so that blew over.
Tremendous song, never thought would hear again. Heard on nostalgia radio 25 years ago. I believe she was backed up by the Stardusters. She sang with soul, but believe was white (of couse color is no factor).
I love the hissing and popping sounds of a vinyl. :)
