@Naurn..A reliable source who was also a presenter at the BBC -PEBBLE-MILL-as it was known..tells me that the recording was during the era of 1976-to circa 1979-The presenter is MR SALEEM.

I met her once in 1998-apparently she was quite ill,but she was a brave and an elegant BEAUTIFUL lady.I asked her if she would oblige me the priviledge to arrange her concert-as I had the honour to do several concerts with ustaad Mehdi Hassan in UK..she smiled and told me with a twinkle in her eye:-

"Inshallah-Allah kih marzi hui-tou aghleh janam zaroor tumhare liye meh concert karhungih"!

Sadly she died shortly.

the 1962 version is better than this one though...... her punjabi flavor is too strong in the voice here....... and that actually kills somehow the mellowness of the ghazal standard that she had set earlier............ but still, its only her song..... and I agree with RJ2121....... "There is less than 1 in a trillion chance that someone could sing it better or even equal to this."

The background of this ghazal was the bloody events of the partition,thus the poet(Faiz Sahib) mentions that even though life (his beloved) still has all the charm but whenever any one with a conscience thinks of what happened during the partition can no more think of the beauty and luxury of life this is a wonderful life touching symbolism. No matter how many times I hear this ghazal I don't feel enough.

Faiz was a Marxist poet.He believed in the principles of Socialism and in social justice.He was also a romantic poet and this duality is reflected here.He starts with references to his beloved but moves on to talk about the shedding of human blood,poverty,the buying and selling of humans and their human exploitation.Faiz concludes by making the point that,although pain and suffering of the heart are pretty calamitous,they have to be seen in the light of the more serious suffering of mankind.
