Now as Rick Perry was going along and approaching Washington DC, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him and he fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him "Rick, Rick, why do you persecute me?" He asked "Who are you?" The reply came "I am Carl Sagan whom you are persecuting." Rick got up from the ground, and though his eyes were open, he could see nothing.
you guys are funny, you cant sell the planet so why would the people in power want to take care of it? we are here to do their bidding and keep quiet, if we make too much noise they start a war to shut us up. its been happening for milennia, why would it change now? there is only one answer, remove the people from power.

I do like Sagan, he was entertaining and he popularised many fields of science. However, when he starts philosophising on the state of human existence, he can really be full of himself.
It seems, if you watch intently til the end, that looking down on the Earth you get a feeling of oneness.
I think that if space flight were made more open to the public, that we all would experience this feeling on a more personal level. Perhaps just that feeling would be enough to change peoples outlook on religion, race, and all of the other segregation's that we place upon ourselves.
carl sagan puts things in a simple but very hard hitting way, this video should be played in all classrooms around the world, we have to forget the people in power, who have become accustomed to weapons of mass destruction, lets change the ethos of our young, we lost a great voice when he sadly left so many years ago, RIP carl sagan
Agreed, someday someone will think it's "necessary". And that will either unleash a firestorm, or a world-wide social upheaval. If those in power know what's best for them, they'll make sure that doesn't happen.
That reminds me of the "Foundation" saga, by Asimov, in which "Earth" is said to have been destroyed and thus contaminated forever by radioactive explosions, and in which is told that, when the military personnel of a spaceship at war heard it's captain order to use the nuclear trusters to make a nuclear bomb to nuke a planet they were warring against, they simply hang the captain and head back home to get a new one.....
What a stirring segment. If we don't do something, the alternative will someday be a war that will litter the planet with wastelands like Chernobyl. Then it won't matter how "right" you are.
i definitely agree it's just sad that we have so must potential and the thing thats going to take that all away from us is......us. in fact most of us will actually LET it happen.
And, from my point of view, if i was ready to risk all i had even knowing there were no chances to win, with about one in ten.....i'm roaring to do it.
What he did not get right is that IF there's a nuclear war, then nothing will be left.
Once a civilisation reaches a certain level of technological development, or it learns the value of life and the meaning of "differences" and "tolerance" or it does not learn anything else.
There is NOT second chances for this stage.
We can not ask for another round of the dice.
We can not put another coin and play again.
We can not push the reset button and restart Humankind.
We must first and foremost abolish aggressive centralized institutions such as the central State. Self-rule must be established for every human INDIVIDUAL, but we can be united culturally. We cannot have such absolute property claims as individuals, because this is what leads to war. We must learn to share the world around us.....because in reality the only thing we can absolutely own is our bodies.
The major problem facing mankind is a problem that has been around for millions of years. That is of course the problem of power. Political power first and foremost, because from the institution of the State comes the economic powers that concentrate most of the wealth in the hands of a few.
Carl Sagan was a nexus of ideals and ideas. It still haunts me that he was taken away from us, with so little meaning. He never saw his dream come into fruition. Sadly, neither will we, unless we can enact change in our society. There has to be an awakening of the human condition, in which Sagan had a sense of eloquence in expressing.
the saddest thing mentioned by Sagan was this: that a substantial number of our world scientists, supposedly "the most brilliant", are raised to spend much of their active and most productive years developing instruments of death for governments. to me, thta's the most heinous, most depressing, thought among all thoughts concerning the human species.

Of course, no extraterrestrial intelligence would send a diplomatic mission to "have a talk with the UN".
That would definitely show no intelligence at all.
If you want to get to know another country, you don't read the official brochure and ask the Minister of Tourism.....

The image of the Earth seen from space should be shown to every child.
There's nothing more moving and touching that seeing that intelligent life (if we may say that we are intelligent) is so rare.....

As a Captain of a sailing ship said once: In this boat or we row all in the same direction or we drown together.
This planet is our interstellar boat.
Or we row in the same direction or we can kiss our sorry asses goodbye.
What is it going to be?

Well, let me put it this way:
IF we don't try, it'll be all over in not so long time.
If we try, however, we MIGHT have one chance in ten. And that's much more better chances than anybody gets when he plays the lottery.
PaxInvictis 4 years ago
