Vocal fry IS NOT what bass singers use when they can't hit a note. First off ANY vocal can use fry...bass, baritone, lead, alto or soprano. Second Mike Holcomb has NO problem hitting these low notes. YouTube is the last place you want to judge someone's vocal abilities on. Too many issues, the quality of the video when it was recorded, it's suppressed when it is uploaded because of size, far too may variables involved.
Mike has one of the cleanest, clearest bass voices in gospel music.
My dad was there Mike's first nite with the Inspirations. The man was talented but when he was 18 and it was his first nite on stage, he couldn't hit a note if it ran itself into his fist. I still love him though!
@bigboytenor actually, no it doesnt stop and start. if you turn up the volume and listen and watch from 2:30 till the end of the note, he clearly stops singing, and the note is sustained.
@vocalpercbass18 I stand corrected. It is sustained throughout. My apologies for doubting your ears, I just couldn't hear it on my laptop so I listened on my desktop with higher quality speakers and you're correct. My guess is that, like with many groups doing live performances, they took the audio recording into the studio and fixed that part where he stopped singing to make it sustain.
@bigboytenor i apologize if i sounded rude, but it is unique how they "dress up" some performances. i've seen one KH video, where steve holds a note while his face is away from a mic. and in an EHSS video, tim duncan holds an A while he's halfway smiling and jumping off the platform.. oh well, i love it regardless! haha
@vocalpercbass18 Not only that, but many groups pad their vocals so they're singing with themselves on their instrumental tracks. It's really obvious when they are out of tune and it sound like you have two tenors, or two basses, etc. I wish they would just get up there and sing and let it be what it is and not "cheat" like that.
I love Greater Vision but I think they could be the next "Cathedral Quartet" if they had a great bass singer. More than anything I love the fact that they LOOK and ACT like Gospel singers should.
every time i listen to greater vision(without a guest vocalist) my ears strain so hard trying to hear the bass thats not there it almost hurts. as good as Greater vision is, the "greater vision quartet" would be sooooo much better
There is absolutely nothing wrong with the quality of Mikes singing on this song, but I have heard him sound less than good elsewhere on YouTube. If this is vocal fry then all basses use it below C. Marlin Shubert was a lot younger back then so I would not like to judge him, but from what I have heard he wasn't even close to Mike Holcomb.
Check out some of the Inspirations videos that I have posted and you will hear some good low down bass singing. I am not sure why he wasn't sining lower here.
yes, he is good, but in my opinion he can't hold a candle to Mike! Plus considering personalities Mike is a whole lot funner to watch, he's not as active on this song as on most he does =)
This is awsome... indeed... the Greater Vision with bass singers is a great project... the one with Christian Davis is great if you fing it PLEASE post it... God Bless you
Now THIS is one great quartet! Have always loved Gerald and the boys and Mike is one terrific bass. Wonder why he didn't wear a RED suit! LOL Thanks for posting a great, great quartet number. FIVE STARS
I notice two things from this video I am in desperate need of a red suit and Mike Holcomb has a gigantic adam's apple 0_0 (lol)

Sorry, but He is no George Younce.....too low for him.

@chowman007 He is no George, but too low for Mike Holcomb? I don't think so. I've heard this guy blast a double low C.

Great version....but I would take the Cathedrals, specially George Younce...His notes are clearer and with resonance.

Frying is when a bass singer try's to get lower than his voice is able to and it just sounds like they're growling with no tone or pitch.
