Why doesn't pop music feel right? Doesn't any artist - pop or otherwise - make you proud? Why, as an American, don't you say anything good about country, western, or rap? Aren't they also seminal examples of your country's musical culture? Why are you so against those genres as opposed to, say, hip hop? Sorry, but you seem to make a ton of musical assumptions about your country. I'm British, so draw different conclusions to you. But: what is it that makes you hate mainstream music so much?
Ugh, this kind of popera, Weber, shallow ballad, crappily written piece of Broadway musical trash fails to show even a glimmer of UK's cultural standing in musical history, culture, and significance. Where's Celtic influence? Where are Protestant hymn-like accompaniment? Where are the folk and symphonic influences from composers like Elgar and R. V. Williams?
@quinntissentialmusic Why would we include a racially/culturally divisive "Protestant" theme within a song that should encompass an entire nation? This was suitable for an entire country - not created to satisfy social elitist individuals like yourself. The very fact you regard this as "musical trash" demonstrates your distinct lack of culture and poor knowledge of history. It would stand you in good stead to remember just how diverse the UK actually is.
@Carpenter261 History? This "popera" genre, I believe, started in the 1960's with the collaboration of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. (Which was then later overkilled by Webber in poperas like Evita, Phantom of the Opera, and more; also Josh Groban and Andrea Bocelli) The fact I see Deon, who has nothing to do with Eurovision or England (she's Canadian) in the sidebar shows how actually universal the "drama-ballad" really is.
@Carpenter261 In a competition where nations have the ability to show what makes their music culture different from others, England decided to go with something that is practically sung in any high-school choir in any English-speaking country - "drama ballads" like "All I Ask of You" from Phantom of the Opera. England has a GREAT music history (with the exception of a blatant lack of "giant" composers in the Romantic era).
@juliedrill the Eurovision is syndicated to every national broadcaster in Europe. this was obviously taken from a Russian tv station, if you look at the name of the uploader and the station logo in the top left of the screen. The song is by the UK, but that doesn't really mean anything, as the majority of Eurovision entries are in English anyway. I don't recall a non-English song winning, in recent years at least..
I just hate norways song.It annoys me very much. The guy is fake faced and the song is stupid.Jade's song was simple,a little boring but nice. And she is wonderful, fell in luv with her.My country gave UK 8 pts in 2009 but now I would give her 12.
@LifeSaver996 Thank you very much. As someone from the UK, I think that is very kind, and I agree with you. I think that Serbia should have won in 2011, because their song is really catch, and I would have given them 12 :)
Unfortunately, this year we weren't as good as we were in 2009, but we hope to keep up an outstanding reputation, so hopefully we'll have a great song next year. Best wishes.
What's with all the American discussion on this video? Erm... can't we just for once see the USA as an irrelevance? This is a EUROPEAN contest, and long may it remain such. Any comparison to American culture is acceptable, but only because it is shared by the UK. Please let's not have these ridiculous aspersions about American culture pervading Britain. We have the SAME culture, and have done for hundreds of years. Let's recognise and celebrate EUROPE for a change.
I know so many countries around the world want to take part in Eurovision, but I don't want them to. It's the only upside of the UK being in Europe and I wouldn't want to lose that.
Anyway thanks to Jade we became respectable in Eurovision again, of course Josh ruined that a year later but Blue got a respectable place despite the song was the best in 2011.
She's gorgeous, and her voice is fantastic, but ...
I gotta be honest, I think this song spoke too much to the American and British shared sentiments (and I put the u.s. first out of the two for a reason) than to the rest of Europe.
For my tastes, the song sounds like an anthem for the selfish, yes it's good to see your entire life as 'your time' but as an entry in a contest like this? Yuck.
& Even the use of the word 'faith' in the middle of the song made me want to gag and stop listening.
The best moment in the performance is when the violin player hits her mic. She rocks her head back... though it looks like the mic hit her teeth (but we would hear that)...
The truth is that this song is better then Alexanders . But didn t want the eurovision because this beautiful song is not for eurovision . Is many classes higher
Why do we even bother (England). We are never going to win because we don't play awesome music like muse, we play songs we think Europe (who's music sense is weird) will like....
Well, that's pretty much what the rest of us do as well. Eurovision would look a LOT different if every country would actually enter with their best artists, doing the music they do best. But they don't because the really great musicians don't want to be associated with something as lame as Eurovision.
And what do you mean "never going to win"? You've won five times! That's more than most of us!
@djaevlenselv haha no way! well i am pretty ignorant regarding eurovision if truth be told. Didnt know we had won five times... Is that a good or a bad thing i wonder? :P
@Lobwho You are obviously a very impartial English person. Blue shouldn't even dare to go on the same stage on the same day as Raphael, the Italian entry in 2011.
I say we bring Andrew Lloyd Webber back with Leona Lewis. How Epic would that be? If we didn't win that then we'd know that the Eurovision is definitely fixed!! lol
My God, I hated this song at first, but it bloody grows on you... and she was daaaamn good on the night. Excellent job, Jade: you single-handedly restored the UK's faith in the Eurovision voting process :-)
@xTrickyNikkix America has a major ego complex. They wouldn't be happy with just one entry. They'll want multiple entries so that the majority of citizens can be happy. Even then, you'd never really hear the unique American music like Jazz, if you did, it would probably be country, western, or rap. A lot of people don't like that type of music, but those are the bigger artists in America. I also wouldn't want to see other big artists in Eurovision either like Lady Gaga. Doesn't feel right.
@Netheeros American here, and honest to god, this is true. America has no true musical talent anymore. We hardly ever had any to start, and we really have nothing to show for except a few wars. I mean, look at what Norway won with, that was simply amazing. We here in America can do nothing even close to that. The closest thing we have to that are people from Ireland coming in and putting on performances. I wish I was part of some of these countries, rather than America, because America fails.
@Netheeros couldn't agree with you more. i would love to be able to have some stake in this contest and not just watch it. if america could just get some really big jazz or rock singer/group then it might have some hold, but if all Americas music industry wants to produce is shitty pop and rap then we would have no chance anyway
@xTrickyNikkix Also, if you wanted to hear some of the more unique bands in America you wouldn't. They would never make it because we have such a capitalist system here. In other words you'd only hear music made to make money by artists who like money/fame/attention. Of course, that is if America was let in, and a lot of people would demand it. I would still like to see it. Put it on hipster channels and it might work. Live streaming should keep the demand low.
(Naw, I don't think we'd do so well, we've gotten too 'U.S.ian', which has started killing our ability to have creative music really become heard here. We still produce really innovative (& Awesome) comedians ... But I doubt that would really help us with a song, heh.)
Well fuck you. I'm so sorry that my country is so worthless that it would ruin your precious song contest. Forgive us for not having any good singers and for being fat and obnoxious. I am now going to flag your comment as spam.
@juliedrill Okay one, I'm American so I intimately know standard US behavior. Two the US is so capitalist that we ignore and never discover our best talent. Three, the US has almost zero culture that isn't capitalist anymore. And four, the comment is rated, you have no hope of it being successfully being marked as spam. Your argument is invalid. :)
I really like this, and I'm from America, so never heard of Eurovision before. I think she sanga beautiful song, just as beautifully. But what I really DIDN'T like because it kept distracting me with how IN MY FACE it was, was the vibrato(that's what it's called on the violin, not sure if it's the same for singing...) the first couple of times I was like, that's really nice. But then it just got repetitive.
@PockyEater101 It is nice to hear a good strong note that doesnt waver isnt it? A vibrato(which is what they call it for flutes, so I assume it would be the same for voice) is nice in light, as an accent, but as the main, it becomes annoying. Like the last note at the end, if she had just broke away from the vibrato, and had a good strong note, it would have been much better.
@Nightcat99 And just to be clear I'm not saying she sings badly because in my opinion she sings beautifully. It just doesn't suit her voice singing a song like that
@StLucifer85 SHE WAS BORN IN LONDON theres a clue there!! and you dont have to be british to enter, the last time the uk won we had an american band representing us, and for your information ENGLAND do not enter eurovision
It's a pretty song, nice vocals and good composing but honestly after a few minutes of listening to this I just feel like ripping the libretto apart. Yes I heard you the first time, it's your time. The repetitiveness really killed the song for me.
@xxTotallyGawjusxx I don't even think Leona could. It's very political now. Have you notcied most countries vote for their neighbouring or friend countries?
@sunderlandgrl yea even in the comments for this year...people are like i will be voting for 'bla bla' my brother country or whatever....its pointless now really :/
What other countries world wide seem to forget its called Eurovision. EUROvision. A European song contest for European countries... So how does Gerogia get into Eurovision. Our song for the 2010 was shite.
@PockyEater101 It is nice to hear a good strong note that doesnt waver isnt it? A vibrato(which is what they call it for flutes, so I assume it would be the same for voice) is nice in light, as an accent, but as the main, it becomes annoying. Like the last note at the end, if she had just broke away from the vibrato, and had a good strong note, it would have been much better.

Should have been another singer... She doesn't sound right for an Andrew Lloyd Webber song, and the song is actually pretty good :o
that's a shame...
Nightcat99 1 year ago
@Nightcat99 And just to be clear I'm not saying she sings badly because in my opinion she sings beautifully. It just doesn't suit her voice singing a song like that

It's a pretty song, nice vocals and good composing but honestly after a few minutes of listening to this I just feel like ripping the libretto apart. Yes I heard you the first time, it's your time. The repetitiveness really killed the song for me.

What other countries world wide seem to forget its called Eurovision. EUROvision. A European song contest for European countries... So how does Gerogia get into Eurovision. Our song for the 2010 was shite.
