I like Ubuntu, but my audio interface doesn't work with it. So I can;t get rid of Windows yet. If anybody has a solution, to use a Tascam US-2000 with Ubuntu, please let me know.
@SimonKentSmith Sorry I can't see any info about it related to Linux. You could try the Ubuntu Community Forums.
I would guess that its not a hugely popular device so the manufacturer hasn't provided Linux drivers and no one in the Linux community has tried reverse engineering drivers for it.
I love Ubuntu i switched from Windows 7 and WOW huge difference in Performance and everything works if you are looking for a decent Linux distro choose Ubnutu then later on go to the other ones if you want hope this helps Good luck!
I just downloaded and installed ubuntu...But when it won't connect to my wireless. It won't even show my wireless and idk what to do. I switched back to my Windows Vista because the internet works fine. Anyone know what to do?
@N11Ckk123472 Sounds like it hasn't recognised your Wireless card. Have a look at my video "Getting Wireless Network Cards to work in Linux" for more info
@N11Ckk123472 hey let me tell you. are u sure you opening the right ubuntu option during boot?
because the default screen u get is just like SAFE MODE in windows . so while you booting it will ask the option try UBUNTU 11.10 (GENERIC) only in this INTERNET connects .
Linux is alright in some situations but having it as a desktop is risky. I had linux distros go bonkers after updates or just using it for too long. If you want reliability and stability go and buy windows 7 home for like $99 or less. Linux is still experimental and not for the regular joe to use as a desktop unless you are a pro at shell commands.
After an update my ubuntu 11.10 kept freezing up at the splash screen during booting. So i just went into previous ubuntu version and it worked but than i tried to fix the current one using the shell and no luck. I just installed linux mint 12 and erased the ubuntu. but now my linux mint 12 gives me errors saying it can't save my video profile after reboots. even if i start nvidia settings in shell by typing sudo nvidia-settings which allows me to save settings to the configuration files.
Yeah, linux is a freaking mess. Windows 7 is a better OS when it comes to driver support, reliability, stability, ton's of professional software. I have windows 7 and linux on the same drive on different partitions and when my linux either freezes or just bugs out with no solution in mind i just boot into windows 7 and download the latest mint or ubuntu distro and reinstall it.
if the linux distributions don't support your wifi card/usb out of the box than you have to search online for open source drivers and If you can't find whole drivers for you wireless than you will have to find out what kind of microchips is inside your wifi(search online) and will have to get every individual driver for that wifi and compile it using the gcc that comes with linux distributions. I had to compile different open source drivers into one for my kworld tuner to work with ubuntu.
for installing video drivers you have to go into shell mode ctrl-alt-f1 than stop gdm by typing sudo gdm stop for 11.10 or sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop for earlier versions, than go to the directory and folder that contains the video drivers and assign execute rights by typing sudo chmod +x nvidia.sh(i named my video driver nvidia.sh) than type sudo ./nvidia.sh and it installs, something like this.
I installed ubuntu 11.10 and it will not connect to my internet. There are no videos on this problem and I am new to ubuntu. What do you suggest? Please respond I want to use ubuntu but can't with out internet..... :( hope you respond.
@FalconX61 find out what wireless card you have, connect to internet with an ethernet cable, download linux drivers for your wireless card, open the additional drivers app and the rest is easy
ubuntu one online storage.let the government know what pirated music/videos you have for a low low price. It's encripted so you know no hackers can see your personal information. Because they really really REALLYwant your musix and vidz. And they all know you save your valuble info on CLOUDS!!! Stupid shit really?THE MOST SECURE PLACE TO KEEP ANY INFORMATION IS ON YOUR OWN COMPUTER! IT'S WHY IT WAS CALLED A PERSONAL COMPUTER!! (PC). Don't use clouds is all I'm saying. For your own good. Trust me.
Why can't this be as easy as installing drivers in windows? Oh wait... it's so much easier.... also.... shit usually works without 'drivers' ...... microsoft can suck a duck. or a penguin for that matter.
@GrAvItYxKiLLz lol good one. I started reading that and was thinking "oh not another complaint". Yeah Windows sure is annoying with drivers, one thing I've never understood is many Windows drivers can be larger than the whole Linux kernel. Suspect those developers are being paid on the number of lines of code they write
@GrAvItYxKiLLz So why do I have issues installing drivers for my 6790 in ubuntu ? but that shit install fine in windows 7. Or my WNA3100 USB WiFi ? yeah those are the only 2 examples that are a pain in the ass. I am stuck using my wired connection and I have to use my IGP to get it to boot fine. And then when I install the driver as per ALL the instructions on all the forums shit doesn't work.
i have your vesion an folow your tutorial, and i do in terminal sudo gedit /etc/rsyslog.d/50-default.conf i thing that is one problem... no ca see compiz plugin to download in ubuntu software center, i have just compiz standart, :( that can do problem that comand? sudo gedit /etc/rsyslog.d/50-default.conf ? how can disable that?
hey i need your help. when i install ati drivers and restart my pc it boots into ubuntu but does not shows anything except my lcd says out of range please help me how to fix it so i can enjoy ubuntu with high resolution
@quidsup yes certainly for speed gain felt extremely sluggish on my quad core....after the speed of puppy linux i dont like waiting .......but what pushed me over the edge was the dock not showing up on the desktop.....
@water4fuelh20 You can get it back easy enough. Right click on the clock, select time and date settings, theres an option in there to show date & month
I just installed Firestarter and it shows log something error, and then i did same thing as you did , and what happened it opened that file in gedit but it was blank. Do you maybe know what went wrong?
i just installed fresh ubuntu 11.10, first time using it, and my keyboard doesn't work. i see it's on when i'm at bios, but not when ubuntu starts. how can i fix this?
@quidsup Solution: get new keyboard. I got another keyboard now and it works on ubuntu. The old one sometimes refused to work on windows too. Sorry to waste your time ^ ^
I like the 'sync folder via Ubuntu One' option. Up to now I've set up sync manually with Dropbox. Very handy with the Pan newsreader so I can go onto a different computer and use the same spam filters. I might take a look at 11.10 but I'm waiting until 12.04, then I'll do a reinstall on all my computers - If I like it of course.
@AnoOtaku Its possible to use GNOME too. I downloaded the DVD version and in install it asks do i want to use KDE or GNOME. =) So well, now my laptop works good with OpenSUSE.
@6250valtra I had to uninstall 11.10. i have nvidia 5600 card.. i tried all the drivers.. it doesn't support 3d even though the driver says its working.. also when i boot in recovery mode.. all i get is white blocks.. and garbled characters scrolling instead of text.
@WolfCoalition I am going to try 11.10 on an Athlon XP machine with the same GFX card in the next days. Do you want me to mail you my solution if I happen to have the same problems?
@SeltsamerAttraktor that would be awesome.. ty.. :) FYI when i first installed 11.10.. all i got was the top nav bar and the rest of the screen was white. i had to boot in 2d mode to install the nvidia driver.. i chose the 173 driver and 173 post release for my GE force nvidia 5600 card.. they both did the same thing, driver activated but not recognized on the system as an nvidia card. also don't choose the NON 173 driver.. i tried it and all hell broke loose on my screen.. lol
@sabbir2world Im not sure. A quick search on Google shows gives mixed results, but with no one mentioning the latest versions of Ubuntu. Try out and see what happens.
@someoneoverthere1 oh yeah last release was 2005 and its no longer supported. Damn I didn't realise.
I think as far as domestic use goes theres nothing faster now that wasn't around then.
Theres no speed difference on my Internet with Firestarter. I've also been able to download torrents with a very high number of low bandwidth seeders absolutely fine
Unlike icedrake 99 Ubuntu 11.10 feels faster than ever than 11.04 maybe because i did a clean install and i saw in the sources that the backports are enabled by default, is it safe??
Nice video. Only one thing that bugs me on 11.10. I hate how the widow controls are hidden by default. Do you know anyway I can get them to be displayed all the time?
@reezaane For me its about 2-3 secs quicker than 11.04, I've got a 10 sec bootup time with 11.10, but thats with a Solid State Disk.
The 64bit version comes ready enabled for multicore booting. My attempts so far to remove surplus drivers & apps have strangely increased the bootup time?
Does Ubuntu One suffer from synchronization issues? I'm on Lucid and One syncs whenever it wants to. Beyond my control and I have no way of knowing if my items are kept in sync.
@growingneeds Its a lot clearer with the Ubuntu One control panel that came out in 11.04. It seems to be alright so far being able to sync straight after a file change, and not locking up on shutdown (like it did in 11.04)
I upgraded it yesterday morning. And it's buggy as hell, I tell you what!
It's also too slow, nautilus always crashes and unity 3d didn't work. So I use gnome shell. But now I'm thinking of either downgrading or installing pinguy.
@blackoutworm Haven't had any bugs, but I can tell for sure that this version of Ubuntu is actually slower than 11.04, which ran like a breeze on my comp with no issues or slowness whatsoever. 11.10, the dash and Unity in general is sluggish.
hey i have a question. i like to know how you re-enable the sources in the ubuntu software center after update to 11.10 ? all the third party sources say disable.
@mjxbox Don't they get left in the list of Software Sources? All you have to do is edit them change the release to oneiric and tick the box to re-enable them?
If not you'll have manually add everything back in.
Looks a bit slow in some cases(Ubuntu 11.10). Sucks I don't have a usb stick. I like libre office but I installed abi word instead cause it is lightweight and not a huge memory or file size hog

@reezaane QUIDSUP MADE A VIDEO ABOUT SPEEDING UP BOOT TIME, WORKS FOR ALL VERSIONS OF UBUNTU =)
KhanTutorials 4 months ago
@reezaane For me its about 2-3 secs quicker than 11.04, I've got a 10 sec bootup time with 11.10, but thats with a Solid State Disk.
The 64bit version comes ready enabled for multicore booting. My attempts so far to remove surplus drivers & apps have strangely increased the bootup time?
Cheers

Does Ubuntu One suffer from synchronization issues? I'm on Lucid and One syncs whenever it wants to. Beyond my control and I have no way of knowing if my items are kept in sync.

@growingneeds Its a lot clearer with the Ubuntu One control panel that came out in 11.04. It seems to be alright so far being able to sync straight after a file change, and not locking up on shutdown (like it did in 11.04)

@quidsup Thanks for the update. I'll give Oneiric a try on a spare hard disk. =)

I upgraded it yesterday morning. And it's buggy as hell, I tell you what!
It's also too slow, nautilus always crashes and unity 3d didn't work. So I use gnome shell. But now I'm thinking of either downgrading or installing pinguy.
This ubuntu version was just sad.

@mjxbox software sources
blackoutworm 4 months ago
@blackoutworm i know that, but how do i re-able them. ?
mjxbox 4 months ago
@mjxbox Don't they get left in the list of Software Sources? All you have to do is edit them change the release to oneiric and tick the box to re-enable them?
If not you'll have manually add everything back in.

Looks a bit slow in some cases(Ubuntu 11.10). Sucks I don't have a usb stick. I like libre office but I installed abi word instead cause it is lightweight and not a huge memory or file size hog

WHEN you say rebuild, wht do you mean?
KhanTutorials 4 months ago
@KhanTutorials Well I usually end up breaking something and have forgotten to take a backup, so I do a full reinstall and rebuild everything
