  • I've never seen Paddy live he hates the lime light from what I have seen of his interviews. Paul Mcartney said that he was one of the most undervalued songwritters in the UK. I know hes been ill but it would be great if he could do one more concert. As a religious person (my most recent fav band who are brilliant live - Keane are seriously anti religion so its good to see someone who standing up for his beliefs against the populist tide! Pls one more concert PAddy!!

  • A religious song for atheists. Paddy McAloon, you're a fucking genius.

  • Great, great man - should have far more recognition - his song writing is up there with all the greatest songwriters - beautiful voice - this song is so beautiful it makes me cry - been a fan since the eighties, just wish he'd release some new material

  • Beside after watching an interview in the old TV series Rapido it is clear I understood the message quite well.Getting people to think about deep and complicated moral issues yet using a common dance beat of the time.Paddy being fascinated by popular musicals. He was still trying to write a kind of musical with religious undertones.Spirituality and religion cannot and should not be reduced to any organized religion.See yourself as you are and find your own path to enlightenment.Free yourself!

  • @enfinlibre68 How do you know so much abt Paddy - he is one of a kind!

  • To the followers of the herd:I never called the lyrics cheesy.I called them weird not so much because they are unusual but because the sound and the production are commercial and cheesy and at odds. However listening to "looking for atlantis and from Memphis "there are a couple of tracks I like just as much or even more but the LP is weak .Now I do not have the honour to know this very spiritual(et spirituelPaddy but the lyrics go"I have no time for religion maybe doubt is a modern disease.."

  • @enfinlibre68 Paddy studied his degrees (history and english) at a seminary. Thats a place where catholic priests train & with a name like Paddy hes going to have a bit irish in him (that will be catholic as well) so God is going to have an influence on him. I like the fact that he doesn't tow the very populist line of nt being religious. He said that if you put Richard Hawkins and Bob Dylan in a room Bob dylan wld win any argument as he is a poet. Check out when love breaks down cars&girls

  • Paddy''s voice is very comforting. Like everything is ok. The baby will sleep sound with Paddy's voice singing nearby.

  • God watch over YOU Patrick Joseph McAloon. You ruddy genius.

  • Please God can you persuade Paddy to do one more tour ? I am going to pray for this every night well may be not every night. This song makes me cry.

    XXXX Please Paddy.XXXX

  • awesome...I'm gobsmacked by Paddy's way with words and a tune.....I miss him and hope he is well...come back Paddy!

  • Thank the Lord God has found someone who can write a modern God inspired song which actually sounds good and I even like Frances version

  • This is not Cliff making a boring religious (and putting it out at Christmas) record this is a beautiful God inspired and not religion inspired song.

  • Is that Paddys daughter - looks like he is happy on a personal level than. Hope is financially secure. He deserves to be world famous.

  • Music that makes me want to cry with both sadness and joy. God bless you Paddy.

  • Listening to this, puts so much of Paddys early work in a different and slightly tarnished context. i will not listen to Mercy, in the same way. This stuff is so, so bad.

  • @markthnark The songs on this album are more soulful and genuine than Mercy and many other songs on Jordan, The Comeback. Very different but equally as wonderful as Swoon.

  • @sproutyDP

Its all about personal taste, but in my view this is plinky, plonky religious inspired gushing. Its actually slightly embarassing.

  • @markthnark don't agree. Religion and god are 2 different things, well illustrated by the words "I've no time for religion" . Quite hard to say its religious inspired after that line.

  • @Westerdd > a statement that can only be said, seriously by a person who believes in God. Check out the definition of religion for the rest of us. Anyway, all music is about personal taste, and I don't like this stuff. It is torturous- and I have been a Sprout fan since 84, seen them 5 times live.

  • It's a masterpiece.

  • I wonder if the naysayers of the "cheesy religious lyrics" would feel any different if he had said "the gods" instead of "God".

  • Auguri e lunga vita a Paddy!! Grazie per la tua musica

  • im not a particular fan of prefab's newer stuff but it is still broad, airy sounding music which must be applauded because so few artists do it anymore......spacy synth, sweet melodies are a thing of the past unfortunately

  • To take Prefab Music at 1st degree can only be wrong of course.Had this LP been launched in the 80s it could have easily been rejected as cheesy despite the weird religious lyrics.Obviously releasing such an end of 80s commercial sound now is interesting and cannot be seen as a commercial cheesy move. The problem is unlike in many of his previous songs, the Irony here is clearly lacking and the melodies and tunes are even weaker than in "The gunman the story so far".Still like"God watch over you"

  • Paddy is a brilliant lyricist and a true musical artist in the long northern CELTIC sense and tradition of the word.I guess the Beatles,Shack,Jah Wobble belong to this tradition also.Actually Andromeda H did reach a level hardly attained in the 90s and certainly not since Steve Mc Queen.I still regard the Swoon album breakthrough as something utterly different and deeply moving. It was hard to predict then they would get so sweet and still retain an edge but THIS won't change the World for sure.

  • Great !!

  • And there are those who say..."The Devil has all the best tunes..." Well....I don't think Paddy is in league with Satan. Thanks for utterly debunking that cliche Mr MacAloon. Your blessing has made my day. I only hope I can share it.

  • paddys found God

  • grande classe

  • great song paddy, god bless u and your family

  • Yes..God watch over you Paddy..thanks for this masterpiece

  • It's ridicolous ..some people discuss the quality of computer..electronic..music...they seem that ignorant people that you find in some museum..discussing of the quality of paintings...of some genious...painter...ridicolous..people....Paddy is simply a genious overtalented musician....you are nothing...else that bla bla bla...

  • Seems like yet again God has deemed to wash over Mr McAloon!

  • Love.

  • Yes, one of his best ever, despite being recorded alone in the kitchen. This would have been a marvellous finished production - even as is, it is superb.

  • A masterpiece..thanks you,as always..,Paddy..

  • Yeah he's Great, writes great songs, but bad choice of sample instrumentes, he got to stop using this mute trumpet thingy it's ugly! Would sound cheap in 91.

  • to @riojp. I fear the overuse of electronic sounds is due to saving money during recording sessions.. Yet, this song sounds good the way it is to my ears. some other tracks from the album, unfortunately, suffer from computer-generated instruments that sometimes sound cheap.

  • @riojp I think the "mute trumpet" to which you refer is actually synthetic strings! I was reading your comment whilst listening to this for the first time, waiting/dreading the arrival of this cheap sound. I'm sorry to say you left me disappointed because they never arrived! I think they actually sound great and anything but cheap. I can understand that some people won't like the use of drum machine but I genuinely feel it does nothing to detract from the quality of this track.

  • @riojp My apologies! I've just listened to it again and I now know what you meant. Yes, real brass would have been nice but I think the fact that I didn't even notice it first time around says it all really. This is song writing of a very high standard.

  • love this men

  • I've been coming back to this nearly every day. I can't stop listening to it.... it is one of the best Prefab Sprout songs ever recorded.

  • God Paddy you sing like you mean it. I'm floating.......

  • Lovely song, in the tradition tune and voices of Prefab Sprout.

    Cheers

    Trace and Roddy

  • I've no time for religion,

    maybe doubt's a modern disease?

Then I look at you, and here's what I do,

I wear holes in both my knees.

I pray that God protects you.

There's the beauty of it all. Religion is BS. Paddy knows playng the religion game is nothing but idol worship.

Paddy knows that Jesus is the Only Way. Thank you Paddy for bringing a little heaven to earth with your wonderful Music !!!

  • @vdvsoldat to be diplomatic, I will say its how the listener perceives the song

  • What can i say? This song is truly marvellous!!! No one can write sentimental and melodical beautiful songs like Paddy.

  • W Paddy thanks god you are back!!

  • Great Song! Great Sentiment!

  • GENIUS !!!!

  • oh mon Dieu ! C'est fantastique !

  • rien d'aussi frais........ encore........

  • great, great and hopefull in the religion of music

paddy mac aloon is a true genius....

  • God watch over you, Paddy!

  • Can anybody tell me why religious theme is so presente in this album??

  • to my knowledge, Paddy McAloon is an inherently religious fellow. I believe in his youth, he was a Roman Catholic, and perhaps still practices, although I do not know for certain.

  • Great song . Greatest album since Langley Park.

  • I love the song and I love the photo!

  • ... and linked Frances' version back to this one too. :)

  • Oh Paddy ....You're the best pop songwriters of the last 30 years .

    Ty for my life's emotions.

  • Yes, despite Paddy having written it, both Wendy Matthews and Frances Ruffelle recorded and released versions, in 1994 and 1995 respectively.

  • I'm wondering if it might be a good idea to make the upload a response to Frances Ruffelle's version of the song. Just a thought. Cheers.

  • Thanks Jim...I didn't know there was a cover of the song already out there..I'll post it as a repsonse.

  • Watch those viewer stats tot up. Lovely choice of photo, Bruce. :-)
