@MrBlablaful they're speaking icelandic, i can tell because i am icelandic. it's not that kind of words or accent modern icelanders use but it's not old norse. old norse is by the way very similar to icelandic
I love this part of the movie, I just wish I could understand better swedish since I havent managed to find an english subtitled version anywhere of this movie...
Unfortunately, the ceremony is entirely speculative. We have insufficient information to do a full or even partial reconstruction of the Norse wedding ceremony.
Moreover, the goddess statue before which Embla lays the dolls is a Sheela-na-Gig, and it is demonstrbly entirely incorrect. I do not know how such an obvious error could have been permitted in a film with the theme of Norse Heathenism.
@pupsenok I guess the movie was not meant to be an exact historical reconstruction and the director claimed some artistic freedom with the Sheela-na-Gig and the "blood brotherhood". Still it is more realistic than most other movies around. We all are still waiting for a realistic movie reconstructing Norse paganism on the scientific frontier. However I do not think all Godesses have to be adressed as pagans always selected worshipping those gods they felt the most connected to.
I agree that not all Goddesses have to be addressed at all times and that Heathens often selected worshipping those Gods they felt most connected to. However, when solemnizing a marriage, I think that the Goddess of marriages should get at least some recognition...and if you do not thank her again until your anniversary, that is okay, too.
I am also surprised that there was no mention of Frigga, the Norse Goddess of marriage and fertility. If I were to have reconstructed a wedding ceremony, I would have called upon her first and foremost.
Hails! I consider myself Asatru to some extent, but I have my own spirituality. Basicially I agree with the moral stances of it but I don't literally believe in my ancestor's gods and goddesses, I am a pantheist, I am always interested in learning about Asatru and any other pagan religion! Hails, again!
Im interesting in northern mithology and asatru too. Who can translating the text? I would like the english/german text. Please, send me the english/german version! Thanks!
Is there a English variation of this me and my wife are planning renewing our vows and we want to go with a Norse theme and style and I know it will not be as authentic as this but i would like to get it as close as possible
very interesting. I dunno how about historicity, and in fact I am a Slavic Pagan, so I come from a neighbouring tradition. In our trad it looked differently, but also interesting.
From what I understand, Slavic paganism is hardly defined, only a vague construction of the Wendish pantheon. I'd be interested to see a viable teleology from modern versions to the old traditions.
I'm from Germany and I did understand some words, but it's not German. Just some words are the same because all this languages are Germanic languages. Words like Blodsband what sounds a bit like the German word Blutsbande are similarly.
The scene is special since there are so little movies dealing with the original European religions (Norse, Celtic, Batlic, Finn, Greek, Slav etc) attempting to be realistic.
Not easy to say which is better Hvíti víkingurinn focuses a bit more on christianization and also shows Iceland
Embla focuses more on the battle of a heathen woman to keep her religion and tribal identity
The full material is more than 4 hours long and those are just 2 different cuts. Also cool:"When the raven flies"
I gotta agree, according to my grandfather an old fashioned Norwegian marrige is "meeting a girl in a beer hall and letting what may happen, happen"
...
You know I've always loved the saying "never mistake norwegian simple manner for stupidity, we're far more cunning than you can imagine" but at some point we really are going to have to apply SOME effort into what we do. The norns are going to abandon us at some point... probably.
Hehe, I lived in a small village just 2 hours from Leikanger, it's in the same county. You are a "Sogning" as Norwegians call it, that's a good thing :)
More like we have a few angels, and the rest are the unfortunate evidence of a people abandon on frozen islands need for procreation. If it weren't for the viking age we might have never had suffient genetic variation to actually survive as a sub-species.
Lol..you sure have enough genetic variation. Read for instance about the Andaman Islanders. A few thousand people survived more than 10 000 years of isolation and adapted quite well to their environment. You dont need so much genetic variation for the optimum. Too much mixture will spoil the optimal adaption to your environment.
Aye, I agree with that. The problem though is if there isn't enough genetic variation, even if they are naturally superior. All the need is one disease that none of them had a natural defense against and the whole civilization dies.
Norse inbreeding is what made us all so much bigger, stronger, and more adaptive than the other races of man, but thats also why were much more susceptible to even the common cold.
Asatru is an amazing religion.

Frigga is the same as Freja imo.

It does not matter that you think Frigga is the same as Freyja. The gothi does not call upon either Frigga or Freyja

I would love to watch this film - looks great.
We know so little about the ancient ceremonies it could be a good reconstruction.
Love the godfigures.
