  • @SmileDudeMusic It isn't an auto-locking device. It's an assisted braking device. You always need to have that right hand on the brake rope all the time. Petzl, if you look on their website, does not refer to the device as auto-locking. They only refer to it as assisted braking or a brake-assisted belay.

  • I started out on the GriGri, but was never impressed with the whole pinch-pull action. Bought a Cinch for me and a friend and never looked back.

    I don't like being belayed on a Grigri, either. I get short roped and over-slacked.

  • Great way of teaching belaying with grigri. I will add: Any bad habits created during the belaying with a grigri can be inconsciensly recreated while belaying with an ATC, and get the belayer to let go the *brake end rope* (lower one). the new technic teached here is pretty similar to the usual belaying technique. In this case, it makes it easly transferable to any other belaying devise. And makes belaying safer. A good belayer, always have friends welling to go climbing with him. :-)
