I transcribed a bunch of Marc Ribot's Tunes ! (Variation 1, Delancey Waltz, Empty, Postcard from N.Y., Kivah, Merengue) and Bill Frisell's too (Probability Cloud Pt 2, Abidan on smugglersfield blog spot !
Brilliant performance and very watchable video by Marc Ribot. Worth viewing a few times to catch all those beautifully timed precussive moments as well as simply enjoying Marc's playing..
The link to this performance is inarguably the best link on the internet in my world. Period. I cannot understand how he can play so perfectly, but he dos and I could cry listening to it.
@svengarley I think it's a first inversion D major decorated with a flat second. So the chord is stacked 3rd on bottom, then 5th, then flat 2nd, which falls down to the root (1.) On the d,g, and b strings it would be tabbed 4 2 4 then 4 2 3.
Guitar is a Gibson ES-125TDC (or TCD, depending on when it was made). Looks pretty much all stock, except he's changed out the tuning machines for what look like some nice Grovers, or similar.
any chance to see the whole show? would really like to have this on a dvd, or cd. are you interested in trading? i can offer ribot solo in switzerland 5.3.09 only audio but good quality! or the first european concert with his new groub marc ribots sunschip. i would appreciate.. moritz
Despite the fact that people aren't perhaps familiar with the clave patterns, it is also played SO immensely slow. Which I personally find amazing, but it is definitely easier to hear when the tempo is notched up a bit. Any cuban music grazing the surface of mainstream is probably heard a lot more uptempo, a "latin flair" and excitement people might expect
lol dont ruin the man's music... try to listen to music not to just hear it.probably you're a douche that thinks he's an expert in music cause he can read it... but clearly music is intended for the soul... i gotta go with the othe ppl in here... That descibe it in few words cause music doesnt necessarily have to be simple but its interpretation should =)
hey billygimp what the drummer is doing is known as the clave in cuban music. it is the "key" rhythmically speaking. the entire spine of most cuban music and always done in a 3-2 or 2-3 pattern. here its a 3-2. however what your noticing is the loose nature of a lot of cuban music. yea the drummer is dragging a lot but thats a lot of the aesthetic of the style the way a good hiphop drummer is not about crazy beats but the feel.
oh man, as much as I can understand what he's doing the drummer tapping his sticks is getting on my nerves, it's really jarring in a weird way. I think it's kind of that the pulse is missing in his tapping compared to what everyone else in in sync with... drummers. sheeeeesh
Wow, sorry, but could your inability to *get it* be any more spectacular? Two words: Arsenio Rodrigeuz. Look it up, and listen. Your comment is like complaining that delta blues players aren't using equal-tempered tuning. Well your comment was seven months ago, and you've probably already learned to dig this stuff, so I should lighten up and get over it.
Yeah that is kind of a hard way to get introduced to Marc. He's all over the place. However, I'm assuming that the Krauss/Plant cd might have just been easy money for him. Who knows though. Maybe he actually liked it.
That album was fantastic. The T Bone Burnett sound is amazing. I don't think it was easy money. Listen to it. It has the same feeling and sound as this number.
my friend wanted me to go see the mexican white stripes, and i was like, "fuck that, if i want to see that, i'll go to thailand, and get the real thing."
Thanks for uploading, this is truely a great performance of my favorite Song of The Cubanos Postizos. The intro sends shivers down my spine again and again.
This is music for pretentious hipsters that have never left Williamsburg. Get out and see a bit of the world folks. Mexico might be a good place to start if you want to hear the real thing.
This is a cover of an Alfredo Boloña song. He was Cuban. I'm not sure why you'd want to visit Mexico to see a "real" version of his music... did you think this was a really bad mariachi band or something?
@SarahV - I laughed so hard over your response. Thanks. I just had this cd out and wanted to see if there was a "live pretentious hipster" variation of it. Made my day.
oh i'm sorry we like something that you don't. We didn't mean to hurt your feelings or offend you or anything. We'll be sure not to listen to it anymore just so you can be happy. Sorry for the inconvenience.
@tubular2006 hey, news flash people like to hate other people. no body sits around and thinks "that guy is right, i saw this video to be a pretentious hipster" learn to walk before you run. in your case its probably to late. and besides its all just noise any way you cool fool.
@tubular2006 The "real thing"? That just sounds like more talk from people that seem to think no good music was made after 1960. Sure, the old stuff is fantastic, but music needs to keep moving and evolving. I feel sorry for folks that live in a musical bubble.
SarahV - thanks for the tip on the DVD documentary. I bought the dvd and it's amazing. Support this artist as much as you can and buy the dvd, it's highly recommended & try to see him play if you can. I live in nyc and have been seeing him play for close to 10 years already. he's always doing new projects and offering us new concepts. His music truly transgresses all idioms.
I've been a fan for years ever since getting my hands on this album. Finally got to see him at Bonnaroo a few years, absolutely incredible show, pls send more if you have them.
