@TreasureDetector I think we used mackerel for bait and its a salt water river, although by the time the water gets to the creek it's pretty well diluted so I'd say its mostly fresh but not completely.
it is aint it. me and my mate are camping in the forest next to a creek this week end. we set up some rat traps and caught quiet a few then we used their legs for bait it works great
use your pitiful imagination lol, we tied the sticks together [all straight sticks after we pruned off the side twigs] using string and made a big funnel, then we wrapped it in plastic, and after that we made a midget funnel to stick inside so it was like a wind sock with a funnel thing at the start then we chucked it in a river with some bait in it.
lol when I go fishing I make a much bigger eel trap made out of random sticks and this old sheets of black plastic we have lying around then we put our "secret" bait in the trap leave it there for half an hour and you can see the eels coming upstream last time I went 1 eel went onto the trap and another was coming and me being the greedy bastard i am i wanted both the they both swam away.... lol
Interesting traps. We use eels for catfish bait around here. Never tried trapping them like that. Looks like your using a traffic cone for the entrance?
Yeah, thats our makeshift eel trap. Its basically made with supplies from the dollar store. I have better pots which are made to catch eels but i wanted to see if i could catch anything with a dollar store pot. And if someone steals it they only get a 3 dollar pot for their trouble.
nice. i only asked because i eat dragon rolls which is smoked eel on a sushi roll. i bet you could sell them for good money in that sense. what do you use them for for ice fishing? looks fun though
We skin and then cut the eels in strips then cut them in little pieces to use as bait. We also dye the eel pieces red with clothing dye to resemble blood which attracts the delicious smelts.
Nice catch, think diluted salt water found on coastal areas is called brackish water...

Teeklip 1 year ago
@Teeklip I think mackarel is what I used, any kind of fish will work for eel, they are scavangers so even rotten fish guts would do the trick.

Those weren't lures, they were this traps specially made for catching eel. They crawl in, and then they can't get out again.

what is your purpose with the eel after you catch it. do you eat it or is it just a fishing game.
GQtony1980 3 years ago
its used for bait, we cut it up in small pieces and dye them red and use it for smelt fishing through the ice in the winter.
BlintVidz 3 years ago
Hey m8!
Did you buy these traps or did you make them?
If you bought them, where did you?
dh5freak 2 years ago
I made them with garbage baskets and a small traffic cone from a dollar store.

what u puttin in the traps as bait?
jiggawha44k 4 years ago
sometimes we use old fish, fish heads and guts. Eels are scavengers so they eat pretty much anything dead on the ocean floor so you can't go wrong.
BlintVidz 3 years ago
wat is the best time to catch eels?
squirrelkiller247 4 years ago
During the summer months is the best time to catch eels basically when the temperature is high.
BlintVidz 4 years ago
are you eating these guys as well?

Eels are eatable but we use them for smelt bait when we go ice fishing in the winter.
