  • I was shown this in my music class at college. I bet not one of them in my class looked this up afterwards. No one my age really gets it, but I think I do.

  • I never tire of his voice. It lulls me. soothes me at the same time taking me on an emotional journey that just makes me smile.

  • Is it bad that I have been replaying this over and over?! LOL

  • 1 Person didn't reach the unreachable star. :P

  • @DLeon138 Or rather, now, 3 didn't realize that reaching the star is not what is important

  • I'm 11 and my mom made me watch this instead of playing my video games and said "Children these days don't realize how amazing music is. Watch this and I'm sure that you will learn to appreciate classical music more.". At first I was doubtful because she already made me watch this whole opera and I've already heard it been sung by someone else. But when I heard this guys voice and remembered the story.....I cried

  • Note the standing ovation at the end. Applause is common at the Tonys. Standing ovations at the end of a number? Pretty rare, unless it's a legend (i.e., Liza, Carol, etc.)

  • I never used to like other singers' interpretations of this - it was always shallow, superficial. But now...once you stick this song into this story...

Let's just say that thanks to Brian I may just have found my favourite musical.

  • THE BEST BROADWAY SHOW EVER.

ONE OF MY FAVORITE BROADWAY SHOW EVER......

    BEAUTIFULLY DONE.

WITH FULL OF PASSION AND LOVE.........

  • Wow - Wow - Wow: Brian made me stop what I was doing to watch - WOW

  • I saw him sing this song live in a concert a couple months ago, it was one of the most beautiful things I ever heard.

  • @masochisticlion1 Me too! It wasn't perhaps at BYU was it? haha.

  • AWESOME!!!!!; I'm crying

  • Amazing

  • I loved the way this singer presented the song to us. It was believable, and I could even hear Michael through it!

  • I had heard this song sung by others to exaustion but stumbling upon this video was like hearing it for the first time and I swear to you: Brian Stokes Mitchell just reduced me to TEARS!!! That's how powerfull it is!!!

  • Hands down, the best performance of this classic song ever. Stokes not only manages to sing it beautifully, he acts it beautifully as well. No other performance so vividly captures the pathos and drive of this passion at the center of Don Quixote's "madness." So glad to find it on Youtube.

  • To Chicago South Dan - If you still haven't found out anything about the actress, her name is Mary-Elizabeth Mastrantonio. She was in the movie Robin Hood with Kevin Costner and a bunch of other movies. Just put her name in the computer. She is a very big actress, more famous than Brian Stokes Mitchell.

  • favorite song ever. the lyrics and music have such a beauty to them. such an inspirational song. :)

  • Why do I always get crushes on guys like him?!

  • @bunnyndisguise it's spelled McEntire!!!

  • Is there any clips of this man singing any more songs of Man of La Mancha?!

  • @RosesNightengales yes, there is a clip of him singing Dulcinea, although it includes only still shots, not a video. It is on the right, the second one down. I don't know if there are any other clips of him doing Man of La Mancha songs. However, there are many video clips of him on youtube. His name is Brian Stokes Mitchell and he is a Tony-award winning actor who gives concerts and has performed extensively on Broadway. He has also guest starred on TV shows.

  • @ChicagoSouthDan And I wish I could find something by the actress who portrayed Aldonza/Dulcinea in the production he was in.

  • @ChicagoSouthDan If you haven't found out yet her name is Mary-Elizabeth Mastrantonio. She was in Robin Hood with Kevin Costner among many other movies. She is quite a famous actress, probably more well known, especially to mpvie goers than Brian Stokes Mitchell.

  • @gracecc5249 Hello. I am afraid I did not make myself clear. I know who she is, so I am able to find plenty of information on her and a list of movies made by her. I meant, I want to find something by her on Youtube. When I type her name into the Youtube search engine, I am not able to find any Man of La Mancha songs by her. I was hoping to find a rendition by her of one of the songs that Aldonza sings, such as "It's All the Same" or "Why Do You Do the Things You Do?".

  • @RosesNightengales And there is also a version of him singing the opening number "I Don Quixote" - also with still shots, no video.

  • FANTASTIC! Evokes tears.

  • Nunca he visto el Quijote tan bien resumido como en las pocas líneas de esta canción.

  • This broadcast was the first time I had ever seen or heard "The Impossible Dream". I was 13 and was completely spellbound by both Brian Stokes Mitchell's voice and physicality. 3 months later I was lucky enough to see him on Broadway, and his performance filled the room just as it filled that theatre at the Tonys. Thank you so much for posting this and reminding me why I fell in love with this song.

  • I feel this song is so timeless. We all have dreams that are bigger than life, and we need to know that the quest for these dreams will make the world a better place. I am so grateful this song and this show are still around and part of our culture.

  • What is so good about this is that for a brief moment he almost causes the cynical and broken Aldonza to believe that her life could be good and it scares her.

  • I am speechless and so very touched by this performance

  • I was so sorry when this wonderful version disappeared from Youtube. It is hard to believe that The Impossible dream could be performed better.

- BRAVO!!!

  • I have goosebumps. o.o

  • Bravo, my crush is even bigger than it already was... This is wonderful.

  • I wish I could have seen this production - Brian is just fantastic as Don Quixote - his voice is just so rich and passionate. It gets me every time ♥

  • while I did not care too much for this production, Mr. Stokes Mitchell's performance of this song was one of the most mesmerizing, captivating, and inspiring performance of a single song I have ever seen.

  • Brian Stokes Mitchell's physicality is fantastic!

  • Chicago South Dan, Thank you for your help regarding information of Mr. Mitchell's Appearance in the Los Angeles area. Hollywood Bowl in July 2010 and Spring 2011 in Santa Monica. Once again, I appreciate your help.

  • @ninarosie Since I have never seen him in a live performance, I would be interested in getting a report on how he does if you go. I imagine some of the other posters might be interested in his performance as well.

  • Cam Winston!!

  • @bunnyndisguise The show Frazier had a lot of good actors and actresses do guest appearances over the years, Brian as Cam Winston being one of them. I did not realize until after that appearance that he was well known for his work on Broadway.

  • @ChicagoSouthDan Yes he was excellent in South Pacific with Reba McIntyre. His "This Almost Was Mine" brought tears to my eyes.

  • @bunnyndisguise Yes, that was great, and you can access that by clicking on the sixth box down on the right. A friend of mine purchased the DVD of that 2005 Carnegie Hall performance. I did not, but I saw it on public TV and I access it on youtube on a regular basis.

  • @bunnyndisguise "This Nearly Was Mine" by him from the Carnegie Hall performance of South Pacific is now on youtube. It wasn't before. Or it was but then it disappeared. It is now back.

  • I was wondering what the words are just before the singing starts. Maybe only the person who posted this can answer that.

  • @ninarosie This is not spam, but it is a repeat of what was posted one day ago. Perhaps you should just remove this and let the one-day-old post stand.

  • Does anyone have anything with the actress who played Aldonza (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio) singing anything? I did a youtube search and did not find anything.

  • Standing Ovation!!

  • not to bash Brian Stokes, but Richard Keiley was Don Quixote/Cervantes. And Joan Deiner was Aldonza/Dulcinea.

  • mAN OF LA MANCHA IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE BROADWAY SHOW EVER. I HAVE SEEN THIS IN NEW YORK CITY. VERY VERY VERY BEAUTIFULL.............

  • wow this is beautiful, I just fell in love with this character

  • LOVE HIM...

  • A true artist and singer!!

    An inspiration!

  • Between Richard Keily and Brian Stokes Mitchell, I prefer Brian's. His voice is warm, strong, and he ghosts through the song as if he was really Don Miguel de Cervantes/Don Quixote.

  • Comment removed

  • I would have loved to seen him. This play made me cry. Especially this song.

  • Chicago South Dan, Thank you for your help regarding information of Mr. Mitchell's Appearance in the Los Angeles area. Hollywood Bowl in July 2010 and Spring 2011 in Santa Monica. Once again, I appreciate your help. Rose Marie

  • I think i like this version best, all the other ones on youtube are kind of off.

  • testing, can't seem to post a message

  • Since I'm not trained in music, it sounded fine to me, but did he hit the note?

  • Amazing!

My only complaint is that he didn't hit that incredible G at the end!

  • @AtLastOnTheGround

    its an F not a G

  • @lucask77 I support that statement. I was listening to another recording, but I didn't even need to because a G would not have fit in this key signature.

  • I had grown tired of this song because whenever I had seen it done either as part of the musical or in concert, it was always "time for the big number". The singer kind of did a majestic version of it. I like the way in which Brian Stokes Mitchell uses the song to explain to Aldonza who he is. "Don't you understand? This is my quest, to follow that star." He hits all the right notes, but that aspect to the interpretation adds a poignancy to it that involved me once again in the song.

  • I cannot stop watching this amazing performance. Does Brian Stokes every appear in the Los Angeles area???

  • @ninarosie According to his website, he is scheduled to appear in Santa Monica in Spring, 2011. I seem to be unable to post the link to his website, but you can do a search on "Brian Stokes Mitchell website", go to the bottom of the page, and then click on Schedule. The Santa Monica 2011 date is at the bottom of the schedule, but there is no more information on it.

  • @ninarosie To expand on my previous post, if you search on "Brian Stokes Mitchell", one of the entries that pops up in Google is "Brian Stokes Mitchell Official Website". Click on that and then click on Schedule at either the top or bottom of the page.

  • @ninarosie Perhaps I have too much time on my hands to be looking up this stuff. Anyway, Brian's schedule entry did say that he will be appearing at the Broad Stage Theater. Although he is not listed on their calendar, you can get to their website by searching on "Santa Monica Broad Stage".

  • A great job at vastly improving a wonderful song by an awesome performer. Your efforts are much appreaicated.

  • @howbeck2000 I agree

  • Chills every time ... Amazing man.

  • amazing amazing amazing performer
