Unique unreal proves UK ability to sound like no one . No one makes this sound they cant even it do it themselves any more or chose not to . A moment in time A moment of surrender . Owen Dublin
I love this song, but like October it's frustratingly short. I went to Dublin in January for the first time, and found Windmill Lane studios which was very special for me :-)
I agree it's obscure, but like Elvis Presley and America I wish U2 had explored this more mysterious angle more deeply. I first saw U2 live in 81. I remember in an interview from way back Bono refused to discuss Promenade saying it was too personal. I don't know if he was simply dismissing the question, or if he meant it. My guess is that the song might reference his feelings in his mid 20's towards his mother, who died when he was 14. Football, coca cola, radio might be what he felt left with.
This song, rainy day, lazy day, whatever...what a great song and album! I loved the mini "The Three Sunrises" sideshoot from this too... U2 does this kind of dreamy music best and it was nice to see them transition into this phase.
As has already been suggested, I think this album is U2's most arty, trippy and otherwordly. I love how Bono comes up with those poetic, dreamy, surrealistic collages of imagery to match the band's music.
@TheChoice264 what the fuck did i say to you? get the sand out of your vagina. I just happen to be one of those people who doesn't like U2, get over it.

fine job on the vid. this is close to how i always envisioned doing a vid for this beautiful song. like minded, i guess. i can see you hold this song very dear too. thank you for sharing this gentle work of art.
Amazing song, reminds me of the time of my fathers death(1985).Although a very sad time this song brings back great memmories.RIP dad, hope to see you again someday.
One of the very purest. Always been a huge fan of this masterpiece. Very dreamy.. I always interpreted it like it was about a beautiful dream and then he wakes up and he hears the "radio radio, radio, radio.." And that's how this song sounds.. Dreamy. Love it! Edge's sound is just awesome in here.
I was 16 when I discoverd U2 in 1984 and I listened to the Unforgettable fire songs each night and I am sure that they have blended into my soul to form an integral part of what I am 25 years later.
@milandodo77 You could do much worse, I also liked Big Country, Llyod Cole, Ultravox and Cocteau Twins in the 80's. If you don't know about them already then take some time discover those groups.
@aquamon68 That's awesome - I feel that they affected who I am today also. I was about 10 when I heard Pride on the radio and I didn't know who U2 was then, but it touched me and I remember feeling emotional and so strongly about the message - so much stronger than the junk playing on American radio at the time. Still love it today.
@kcirdrab Well said.. it's songs like this one, perhaps the "obscurity" you spoke of.. like "A Sort of Homecoming" and like "Mothers of the Disappeared" on the Joshua Tree album as well... that gave the U2 albums of this era a personal "specialness" to me. This song touches an inner part of me that words can't even describe.
The new album is closely connected to "The unforgettable" fire album and listening to this song is evident. Both albums are very Brian Enoish and ambient. Hence why "The Unforgettable Fire" song is on the current tour's set list.
There was something almost otherworldly about 'The Unforgettable Fire', such a seductive and hynotically atmospheric album, it just takes you out there.
It's almost as if another band made it - almost nothing by U2 has sounded even remotely like it before or since.
@KenfromDublin Yep know what you mean mate. Maybe because they'd originally used Steve Lillywhite as producer, but now opted for the avant-garde with the amazing Brian Eno who'd originally worked with Talking Heads.
When they were the coolest looking band as well as the best.Adam and Larry with flatops,Edge going bald and Bono, the only person ever to make a mullet look cool, happy days indeed!
Its amazing that a band can make all their albums very good. You look at them all and they just have great songs on them. And even the songs you don't think of when you think about the album are good.
U2 is just one of those bands that don't come around often in rock and roll.
Unforgettable fire in probably one of the most under-rated albums of all time. U2 didnt really hit big commercial success with the masses until Joshua Tree in 1987
Maybe their best song ever. I first saw U2 live in 82, so i'm not a newcomer. This song has an abstract gentleness.I find much of the later work derivative. I read an interview years ago where Bono refused to talk about Promenade, saying it was too personal. Im not sure what he was referring to, but I liked this angle U2 pursued for a while. It was inventive and original. They were in their twenties and the ideas were flowing.

U2 en estado de gracia, oscura, con ese manto de cuerdas tan bonito, una pena que no durara 3 minutos más. Que gran canción y que gran disco.
