For what it's worth Apple adapted the dual quad core processors for the Mac Pro because a lot of video editors and design professionals use these machines. It allows high performance high resolution video editing and 3D modeling. I'm not a mac user, and never will be. I'm an intel fan, and HP also makes many workstations running dual quad core xeon processors.

Xeon is the architecture that Core i7 is based on.

Core i7 is kinda of like a beefed up superhcharged version of the Xeon.

xeon 5500 is the exact same thing as an i7 920 except it's got two QPI links for multiprocessor support, and ECC memory support.
