Devastator, our government has never been that unreasonable. It's done many wrong things in it's history, though. (mostly involving racial discrimination laws throughout the 1800's & 1900's as well as sanctioning slavery for the first 80 or so years of the republic)
It's not the worst thing governments have done in the past.

Once more, Speaker Pelosi, at the moment, still doesn't have the votes in the House for her preferred "Medicare +5" plan, and it's hazy whether she'll get there.
And, honestly, trying to maintain that "oh, if this doesn't work, the impact won't really be that major", doesn't do justice to what's at stake.
If the bill goes through, scraping by with all Democrats, in the Senate and 218+1 in the House, and it fails, you've officially condemned the Democratic Party's future as a governing majority ever again.

-In the Senate, the Democrats control 60 seats, with 11-12 Senators hailing from conservative states.

I think the opt out is the best way to go if you want the public option to survive. When you give people a choice in this manner, even the conservatives will come around and next they'll be saying, "Get your hands off of my public option." Just wait and see.
Depends on how they're saying you can opt-out.. If it's an opt-out that has to be voted on by the state's citizens, then I agree. If it's an opt-out that can be decided by a few ignorant right wing bible thumpers in a back room, then it solves nothing.
That's the point though. If a few people vote it out, and then the whole state wants in on it and they few stubborn conservatives stay stubborn, then they'll get voted out for what the people want. It's a good way of weeding out the bad.
And if California was one of the states to opt out?
Kaiser, Blue Cross, Blue Shield, Aetna, Pacificare, and a host of other solid companies are already competitors in California, with not a one of them controlling more than a 24% stake of the insurance market.
With all the reforms for citizens already in the bill, and an active and competitive market already in place, the need for the "public option" isn't all that pressing.
And as "liberal" as California is often portrayed to be, outside of the Bay Area in Northern California and the Los Angeles area in Southern California, California is as conservative as any other state in the rest of the Union.
All you have to do is look at the state's legislature, deadlocked at near 50/50 since as far as I can remember.
Add in that California is the same electorate that reversed the State Court's decision, which allowed an exemption for same sex couple, and it could happen.
With all the reform measures that are already inherent in the bill, like eliminating things like "pre-existing condition", dropping people from coverage after they've paid their full premium, charging different rates based on gender, in addition to improvements, like capping the amount of out-of-pocket expenses and extending family insurance to include children, up to the age of 26, the flexibility to fudge with the numbers in severely limited.
Add in the fact that, under these new rules, California still has one of the most competitive insurance markets presently in the country, and the reforms look to be a boon to the people of California, offering increased reliability in insurance coverage, and a market with many of the consumer protections that Democrats across the country have been advocating for years.
I'm not saying there aren't good points made in the existing proposals, but they insurance corporations have already stated they would raise premiums significantly, possibly by as much as 100% if and when the legislation passes.
But even if the rates did not increase, Americans already pay extortionate amounts for their health care today. The rates need to come down for reform to have any real effect. Without that all the other issues become, not meaningless, but certainly much less effective.
Still the proposals, that can actually get passed in the Senate, do have some serious teeth to them, yet wannabe "progressives", on Youtube and other places, are merely acting like "bomb throwers", working their darnedest to wreck the whole process.
On the table right now, the Senate has proposals, which amounted to regional "public options", started with government money but maintain by fees from it's membership, that would have regional negotiating powers.
Would it have been Medicare for all, as ridiculous as I think that would be in our country? Not in the least.
Still, the co-op "public option was an idea that had all moderates and most Democrats on board, and would've been able to garner the needed 60 votes, with minor tweaks.
The votes were there for that idea, and yet wannabe "progressives" scoffed at that idea, instead to push for an idea, which to this day still doesn't have the votes to pass the Senate.
80%of the things that progressive have been fighting 40 years to get, a layer of government-backed competition for the uninsured, with the 60 votes needed to break the filibuster, wannabe "progressives", like Cenk, Olbermann, Arianna and others, sabotage the whole process, by pushing too far, without the actual votes to pass legislation.
My belief has always been that the Democrats should go as far as the votes will take them, pass something, and then improve on it later.
Yes, my family has employer-based insurance coverage, from a, IMO, great company that has provided my parents, my brothers and I, excellent care, from the day that we were brought into this world.
Still, even if I had to go to the open market, as a 22 year old, non-smoking male resident of California, I'd have at least 9 different health insurance companies to compare coverage from, and make my decision.
California doesn't have to deal with one company controlling 80% of the market.
I think that part of the reasoning behind waiting a few years before effecting the legislation (the whole Y1 business) is that there is a need for appropriate infrastructure to be put in place.
no, no cenk, for the love of god ,never and i really mean ever, sell your political soul to that vaudiville act which make the most enlighened of us laugh at ,that fair and balanced and laughable channel it chokes me to say it fox.
Do you realize no one really said this negative stuff about a trigger to attack it? It's because they may not want it for healthcare, but they want to be able to use it later for something else, so they don't explain in the same way that Cenk did.
Im from australia but watching fox hannity and beck you can't help thinking that there bias against obama and the demorcats is plain to see. If you can't see that then i feel sorry for you.
So here's a question: What good is a public option for health care when the poorest people in America still can't afford it? True public health care means everyone has access to it, even if they're dirt poor living on the street. To have a "public option" to "drive down insurance rates" won't do a damn thing, it will be like nothing has changed. If you're gonna have a public option, you're either gonna have to take it all the way or just give it up. There's no middle ground on this issue.
I like what you're saying, but you do realize how patently ABSURD a 'true public health care system' would be in this particular country? The possibilities for abuse are astronomical, not to mention the sheer numbers of people we have.
You can universally insure 20-30 million. 350 million? Not to mention the undocumented which make up another 20 million? Add on the fact that most American's lifestyles are amazingly unhealthy (myself included) and the task is simply too great.
That's something to consider, and why I think this whole "health care reform" garbage is a waste of precious time. The health care system in America will always be mediocre at best, and all the "reform" in the world won't put it up to standards with other first-world countries, simply because we have too many people to take care of.
Really!? You do realize that the European Union is more populous than the U.S.? Size is not an argument against healthcare reform. If anything, your size could help you getting a better deal from pharmaceutical companies.
As about as unhealthy has the British. What you got to keep in mind a public heath services goal, can still be to save money only now it HAS to cover everyone so the only way is to make people healthy. For example the NHS in UK puts Billboard adverts up about diseases and so on. Even TV adverts are estimated to cost less than treatment of the people they effect.
Because its free people see the doctor often, catching a bad heart 5yrs early and treating it with 2$ week pills. It really saves.
16% of US GDP goes to healthcare. Most countries its around half as much. That 8%~ could be spent in the shops rather than paying insurance companies who pay next to no tax and pay there CEOs millions.
i loved bill oreillys comment about grayson saying cheneys upset with the president because he does'nt shoot old men in the face and if cheney turned into a bat and flew away after speaking. that sounds dignified for a congressman oreiily says. i wonder if it was just as dignified when chen told a senator on the senate floor to go fuck himself. i am sure oreilly found that dignified as well.
u no what would be extremely ha bisky if shep calls fox conceritive news and that it is biest and finally have them called out for what they r caz then how can they shut shep up he would be the most ha bisky person ever he would be as ha bisky as grayson is
CNN has gone right wing.. they are sliding more and more to the right.. they are jealous of the profits being made by all the crazies on FOX fake news
this is sweet. Hopefully after a few years, our political climate will have changed to the point where health legislation including a single-payer system can be successfully passed. I find it immoral that something as critical to survival as health insurance can ever be bought and sold in a for-profit market.
ooh look at the power-cocksucking bill o riley being all sady sady, too bad his disgusting dishonest ignorant hypocrite asshole face and all his idiotic babbling will be stored on the internet for EVER , for future generations to laugh about him
Obama and the white house are playing the game perfectly. I'm no fan of Obama's current achievements, but i do understand the difficultly in passing a progressive agenda. At this point, everything seems fishy with him, we still don't know what to completely make of him. But trully, hopefully, I think that its all on purpose. Obama has tried to "pass so much at the same time" because its hard for the opposition to organize and get there talking points out there. He HAS to get a Pub Opt..duuu
Go read my comment again, think about it, and then reply again.
Also, these are the worst examples to give me...
The middle east and our current involvement there is shocking, We are "investing" in a chaos at a time of unimaginable domestic need. Winding down??? more like moving... which is even creepier..
Recovery of the market????? please....are you really that ignorant and watch TYT videos?
Clash for Clunkers???? couldn't think of any better??
Cenk the numbers are fixed the numbers count 10 years of taxes and only 7 years of service with $300bn written out of the bill into appropiations. the government will loose money.

Kaiser, Blue Cross, Blue Shield, Aetna, Pacificare, and a host of other solid companies are already competitors in California, with not a one of them controlling more than a 24% stake of the insurance market.
With all the reforms for citizens already in the bill, and an active and competitive market already in place, the need for the "public option" isn't all that pressing.
scipio2009 2 years ago
And as "liberal" as California is often portrayed to be, outside of the Bay Area in Northern California and the Los Angeles area in Southern California, California is as conservative as any other state in the rest of the Union.
All you have to do is look at the state's legislature, deadlocked at near 50/50 since as far as I can remember.
Add in that California is the same electorate that reversed the State Court's decision, which allowed an exemption for same sex couple, and it could happen.
scipio2009 2 years ago
Thing is, all the competition in the world won't help us if the big corporations all agree they should overcharge us.
megamarsvin 2 years ago
With all the reform measures that are already inherent in the bill, like eliminating things like "pre-existing condition", dropping people from coverage after they've paid their full premium, charging different rates based on gender, in addition to improvements, like capping the amount of out-of-pocket expenses and extending family insurance to include children, up to the age of 26, the flexibility to fudge with the numbers in severely limited.
scipio2009 2 years ago
Add in the fact that, under these new rules, California still has one of the most competitive insurance markets presently in the country, and the reforms look to be a boon to the people of California, offering increased reliability in insurance coverage, and a market with many of the consumer protections that Democrats across the country have been advocating for years.
scipio2009 2 years ago
I'm not saying there aren't good points made in the existing proposals, but they insurance corporations have already stated they would raise premiums significantly, possibly by as much as 100% if and when the legislation passes.
But even if the rates did not increase, Americans already pay extortionate amounts for their health care today. The rates need to come down for reform to have any real effect. Without that all the other issues become, not meaningless, but certainly much less effective.
megamarsvin 2 years ago
Still the proposals, that can actually get passed in the Senate, do have some serious teeth to them, yet wannabe "progressives", on Youtube and other places, are merely acting like "bomb throwers", working their darnedest to wreck the whole process.
On the table right now, the Senate has proposals, which amounted to regional "public options", started with government money but maintain by fees from it's membership, that would have regional negotiating powers.
scipio2009 2 years ago
Would it have been Medicare for all, as ridiculous as I think that would be in our country? Not in the least.
Still, the co-op "public option was an idea that had all moderates and most Democrats on board, and would've been able to garner the needed 60 votes, with minor tweaks.
The votes were there for that idea, and yet wannabe "progressives" scoffed at that idea, instead to push for an idea, which to this day still doesn't have the votes to pass the Senate.
scipio2009 2 years ago

Do you realize no one really said this negative stuff about a trigger to attack it? It's because they may not want it for healthcare, but they want to be able to use it later for something else, so they don't explain in the same way that Cenk did.

LeviathanMist 2 years ago
So true.
Sonnyxleet 2 years ago
I like what you're saying, but you do realize how patently ABSURD a 'true public health care system' would be in this particular country? The possibilities for abuse are astronomical, not to mention the sheer numbers of people we have.
You can universally insure 20-30 million. 350 million? Not to mention the undocumented which make up another 20 million? Add on the fact that most American's lifestyles are amazingly unhealthy (myself included) and the task is simply too great.
eljefereal 2 years ago
That's something to consider, and why I think this whole "health care reform" garbage is a waste of precious time. The health care system in America will always be mediocre at best, and all the "reform" in the world won't put it up to standards with other first-world countries, simply because we have too many people to take care of.
LeviathanMist 2 years ago
Really!? You do realize that the European Union is more populous than the U.S.? Size is not an argument against healthcare reform. If anything, your size could help you getting a better deal from pharmaceutical companies.
TheDudefromSomewhere 2 years ago
As about as unhealthy has the British. What you got to keep in mind a public heath services goal, can still be to save money only now it HAS to cover everyone so the only way is to make people healthy. For example the NHS in UK puts Billboard adverts up about diseases and so on. Even TV adverts are estimated to cost less than treatment of the people they effect.
Because its free people see the doctor often, catching a bad heart 5yrs early and treating it with 2$ week pills. It really saves.
CmdrTobs 2 years ago 2
16% of US GDP goes to healthcare. Most countries its around half as much. That 8%~ could be spent in the shops rather than paying insurance companies who pay next to no tax and pay there CEOs millions.

i loved bill oreillys comment about grayson saying cheneys upset with the president because he does'nt shoot old men in the face and if cheney turned into a bat and flew away after speaking. that sounds dignified for a congressman oreiily says. i wonder if it was just as dignified when chen told a senator on the senate floor to go fuck himself. i am sure oreilly found that dignified as well.

this is sweet. Hopefully after a few years, our political climate will have changed to the point where health legislation including a single-payer system can be successfully passed. I find it immoral that something as critical to survival as health insurance can ever be bought and sold in a for-profit market.
