iv been a fan of slipknot and metal for about 10 years now. And although i think this album is good i think that the whole genre is very stale. No one seams to be pushing any boundaries any more im never surprised by a metal album anymore. The metal scene is slowly becoming as shallow as the main stream shit thats coming out and that worries me. The last metal album that i actually thought "wow this is really good" was deftones saturday night wrists. Am i the only one that see's this?

Not that that makes a difference here concerning Slipknot, but if you'll listen to early material by Metallica, Black Sabbath (with Dio), Ozzy's solo work (particularly Blizzard and Diary) as well as Iron Maiden (up to Seventh Son), they all have characteristics of classical intertwined with awe-inspiring heaviness.

One thing about this album that I think people who trash it seem to overlook is that the songs have deeper meanings laced together with dark and poetic lyrics drenched in politics and war than their earlier works (though they are great as well), which simply deal with angst and alienation. To be honest, I'd rather listen to a slow song with a message, than a fast song that's fast just for the sake of being fast.
