With a leech, they could've left it. It would've eaten as much as it needed and then left. Pulling off a leech is a bad idea, because when it leaves, it makes it so that the wound doesn't get infected, but if you pull it off, it doesn't get that chance. Leech is a relatively harmless parasite actually.
