The filter settings on this pedal are very sensitive.
I own this pedal and tried it through a Bugera 1960 head and it wasn't articulate in the distortion. The head was scrapped after the transformer blew.
I then used in a Soldano clean settings only, and it sounded really good...The Soldano had the XL mod which pushed the trem and bass and scoops the mids...The RaT2 made up for the scooped mids.
Now I own a 5150 iii and it's even a better sounding pedal..the best combo so far.
@bigskymind81 I'm pretty sure its true bypass. At least the description on the proco website says so as well as guitar center's description. Maybe luizcool knows something we don't.
I did the ruetz mod and it sounded great for a year, now it is giving me a giant increase in volume and distortion that I don't want. I have kept the same settings. Does anyone know what is wrong with it?
Really nice crunchy overdrive, I've bought myself one. I also bought an MXR Fullbore for when I want to do really heavy shit. Then sold my Boss OS-2 because it sucks hairy ass.
They are bad for modding, but sound pretty much the same. True that they *might* sound *different*, but sound is subjective, Don't let someone else tell you what sounds good.
They are bad for modding because the copper strips on the PCB are extremely thin, making it easy to accidentally scratch off during modding. This is why modders like Keeley will not mod Rat 2's anymore.
This is not the same as "The RAT2 sucks omfg it sounds so bad!1!!!!1!".
I hate how everytime someone turns up the distortion on this pedal they turn up the Filter haha. Just crank the distortion and the volume and forget the filter exists, the pedal is a great distortion unit. It's cool if you like the fuzz tone, but let the audience here the straight grind of the pedal minus the filter action.
I bought mine in 1992 and have used it successfully ever since. Only time I don't is when I use my Fender Twin lead channel or when using a guitar with active electronics.
I don't play rock or need heaps of distortion but i can get a good creamy lead Santana/Scott Henderson tone out of it which is what I like best.
Yes, it is true bypass. Should be anyway, the literature says it is - it specifically says the input and output are disconnected from the signal path. And it uses a 3PDT switch. That's a lot of trouble to go to if it's not true bypass...
Hey, for the Proco Rat 2. Mine cuts off the sound when i press it. What did you do when you first got it? i use a battery. and a Circuit Breaker Cable. it might have something to do with the cable. What kind of cable do you have?

@t0v3 lol yeah, I tried the OS-2 for a day and hated it. They shouldn't even make that pedal, its useless.

No doubt! What a useless pedal. OS-2 = most overrated distortion pedal created. Thin, shitty sound.

@kitano123 Its not bad, just a different sound, not as good as the older ones, but still not bad by any means.

You probably figured this out by now, but that sounds like a dead battery. Try a fresh one. :)
