  • I love the annotations. You can tell they were typed with rage.

  • This is real, you can do it. To bad you can't go up more than a jump.

  • Cool, well it IS a bug from the engine :D

  • N i c e !

  • My theory is that since the gap is smaller that yourself, the tiny gap in between the portals is far too small to stand up in as well without actually making physical contact with yourself, however, since that was most certainly not supposed to happen at any time, the game kind of glitches out.

Only I could have explained that more professionally but you should be able to understand what I'm saying.

  • @hedgehoggy147 *brain broke*

  • Nice, didn't know it!

  • I read in a physics book that there's a theory that at the edge of the universe, it doesn't really end but instead just comes out the opposite end. Kinda like when Neo in the second matrix ran down the subway tunnel just to end up where he started.

  • @southparkresident thats the theory about the closed universe

  • woot glitch XD

  • @spliter88 i have no clue what your are saying but.... YEAAAAAAAAH!

  • it sreiously looked like you jumped *stare* =3=

  • spliter88@ so i c

  • If the laws of physics don't apply in the future, God help you.

  • Mind fuck I'm so dizzy.

  • HEY. GET BACK HERE! D: I JUST WANNA TAAALLLKKKKK.

  • Man thats trippy

  • Oh my god. This video gave me a head spin

  • I see some troll physics kicking in here.

  • lol cool

  • Obviously you didn't hit the floor, but if you want to make it more obvious to people, then just do this on a "least steps" challenge map, and show that your steps did not increase.

  • The only reason I'm not calling this fake is because I encountered this myself. Thrice.

  • Jesus Bob how many floors do we HAVE?

  • now u see this is what happens when u divide by zero

  • Actually, this bug isn't so much of a bug at all, but...a really weird situation to stumble on. You're not actually bouncing up, you're standing ontop of yourself. So, that's totally fucking with the physics because in video games, characters (should) be created to be a solid object, which is why characters can't walk through other solid objects.

Check the ceiling. It's barely taller than Chell, thus with the almost nonexistant gap, she can stand on herself and fall simultaneously.

  • @digiangel234 this bug also occurs with a much wider gap between my feet and head, so it must be something else.

  • @nitrohedgehog The bug also happens only when you're going ~through~ the portal, not elsewhere.

  • @digiangel234 which means it doesn't matter if the gap between my head and the ceiling is small or not.

darn, now im back at square one.

  • @nitrohedgehog ok

    the easy explantion

in valve physics it's always solid, what they do is make you body go through the map and teleport to the other portal. so that little stp thing u get may be your body or your just bouncing on the floor

  • @rayman1014 i am not hitting the floor, watch the video again.

  • @nitrohedgehog oh jesus, sry i was completely off track totally thinking of somthing else

  • @nitrohedgehog Well, Nitro sure proved you guys wrong with his infinite wisdom. CLEARLY THIS IS AN ACT OF GOD AT WORK.

  • @nitrohedgehog obviously you didn't get what rayman was trying to say... The portal itself is just an image.

Valve has certain constants... one of which being their games suddenly closing without warning...

But you are crouching and when you "un-crouch", it ignores the fact that there is a portal on the floor. It simulates you uncrouching on the floor, then the portal allows you to slip through it again.

Bad coding is all it is.

  • @nitrohedgehog He's actually right, Primarily the physics object that is applied the the Chell model is in fact a basic cylinder which is slightly taller than the actual model itself. (72 units when standing) The height of the room itself is 128 units, meaning that when you pass through one portal to the other, you are left with no gap for more than two chells in the same room. You stand on yourself, and the physics engine calculates the friction between both models and slows the player down.

  • @nitrohedgehog

When you are going through the portal, you ARE hitting the surface. Inside the portal (which is a flat solid, in the game physics), is a 3d copy of the world, rendered. When you go through a portal, your character "hits" this wall, and as part of collision checking, notices "hey there is a portal here, teleporting", causing you to teleport. Because the engine sees the floor (and the portal) as a solid, some actions may have glitches.

    raymam 1014 is correct.

    ...

  • @nitrohedgehog

...On top of that, you MAY be hitting the floor outside of the portal, as the Chells you are seeing are not you, but are separate models rendered in the copy worlds, and are not used for collision detection (she could get stuck, without hitting something, she could pass through solid objects, as those models are NOT solid, I have seen both happen)

In fact, I am pretty sure, except 3rd person mode, CHell's model isn't used for collision detection at ALL, rather, camera distance.

  • @nitrohedgehog Perhaps while crouching, the hit boxes on Chell's legs go farther out than the portal, and cause a slight tap which temporarily slows the player?

  • @BowserKoopaFTW that doesn't explain going back up without hitting jump...

  • @digiangel234 you can't stand on your own head when the ceiling is higher than you, that's trollscience. you can't fuck yourself into the ass either because whenever you move your dick forward you also move your ass.

  • @digiangel234 but doesn't that mean that since she would be standing on herself then her own body prevents herself from falling? she's on a solid object (which is her) in which no other gap between her and herself is there thus preventing her from falling? I fucked my own mind!

  • @digiangel234 the bug that occurs is just that you accelerate too long in free fall

you gain so much speed that the mechanics of the game actually slow you down (its either implemented or its because of the size of the variables).

the same bug is in minecraft when you use infinite accelerating minecarts...

  • @digiangel234 you just blew my mind

  • @digiangel234

yeah but explain why you can do it in raised ceiling rooms

  • Great for torture in real life. So you won't tell me? Huh?

Ok use the Portal guys. Make him fall forever!

  • i got to try this

  • Lol you did find a bug

  • debate? why? its justa an unexplained bug, like ragdoll bugs in halo 3 or bot bugs in gears of war 2. Maybe teabagging in mid air through portals are so strong it destroys gravity

  • Wait, if you crouched, wouldn't that make your decent seem faster rather than slower?

  • @Player01198756 why? Gravity is a constant, you'd be accelerating at the same rate... well there is some marginal ammount of decelration due to wind resitance but you'd have more wind resitance crouched so maybe a tad slower that way.

  • HURRY,YOUVE GOT TO CATCH THAT LADY.

  • If I could do that I would sooooo give myself a Hi-5 XD

  • no he has a point if there was no floor only a protal linking to the portal above all attoms iside the cylinder of the portal wouldnt be effected by gravity becuase there cant be gravity emited from above and below so the forces would cancel eachother out creating an equalibirum... *cough* i mean aint this game greait :D

  • it sounds like the london underground

  • THIS ISN'T A BUG YOU IDIOT GOSH!

    lol jk, : P

  • Actually, I think what's happening here is that you're ducking, and the game is reading you as falling faster because you're ducking... except your "double" ... the one you see below you... is still falling at the same rate because it's not really you.. and you're bouncing off of your own head.

's what it looks like anyway.

  • @frajeff91 That's plausible, but I think the room is too tall to support that idea.

In my opinion, as spliter88 said, but differently, I think that maybe if when you uncrouch, your model extends upwards. In doing so, the game thinks that you're going through the portal in the ceiling, causing it to push you up and thus slowing your speed.

Just a thought. I haven't looked at the mechanics of the game.

  • You Totally Didnt Hit The Floor. And Those Arent Portals. And the Cake is true.

  • that happened to me also

  • its the source engine. with the crouch jump, you appear to move up more. so yeah.

  • Shame this isnt real, it would solve perpetual motion, and then you can use the generated power to bake your own fucking cake

  • Bind keys that makes the gravity goes to 10000 and -10000 quickly. Heh

  • yeah i noticed that too, pretty ugly but still a minor bug/glitch/issue/whatever.

  • This would happen the real life.

The distance from the ceiling to the floor is matched with the height of your body times 2. So when your legs go through the portal and touch your head you slow down.

  • lolz

  • This actually wouldnt work, it would actually create a zero G scenario, and the person would just float. because there is no actual ground, just a portal.

  • @pistolpete198069 that depends on how the portal works.. is it a wormhole type? a quantum teleportation type? string theory based portal? etc.

plus this is all theory, all we have managed to teleport so far was laser photons at a distance of 3 feet.

  • @nitrohedgehog the portal turrets appear to work more like quantum entaglement, tying two space time locations together on a fundamental level.

But thats only a best guess based on the way they function.

  • @nitrohedgehog its a video game type portal

  • @nitrohedgehog no he hasa point if there was no floor only a protal linking to the portal above all attoms iside the cylinder of the portal wouldnt work becuase there cant be gravity emited from above and below so the forces would cancel eachother out creating an equalibirum... *cough* i mean aint this game greait :D

  • @nitrohedgehog

    this is not teleportation.

it is a hyperdimensional gateway. functioning like a wormhole, except zero travel time between gates. theoretically

  • @pistolpete198069 wow okay dr kleiner XD

  • Comment removed

  • @pistolpete198069 actually, that's not true. An object that goes through a portal retains it's momentum. As the object falls into the portal, it gains a little momentum as it is pulled down. In the infinite loop scenario, it reappears above the lower portal with the same momentum as before, but continues falling down, so it gains a little more momentum before re-entering the portal. The object will gradually accelerate, just as if it were normally falling.

  • @pistolpete198069 it would acctually work, because the mass of the earth is still around the portal, although you may fall slower

  • @pistolpete198069 I think the gravity would be added to itself and create a black hole... Or you got mashed to goo... But who cares, the game is cool anyway :-P

  • @pistolpete198069 Wrong, as the game states a ton! portals keep momentum and therefor you would fall forever

  • @pistolpete198069 After playing the game it is obvious that gravity acts through a portal such that one on the floor does not create a 0g area above it.

  • @TamlinMatthew lol he means in real

  • @pistolpete198069 But there would still be gravity.

  • i know why its happends:

when you pass through a portal ducked and you get up your head pass through the upper portal and all your body gets pulled up

    PD:sorry 4 my bad english

  • @jorgeflp1 finally someone with brains!

  • its also impossible to look up when falling :S

  • To put this simple and hopefulluy stop debate, this is not a bug, nor glich. When you go through one portal you come out the other. If you have one portal above you and you shoot one below you, you infinitely fall, untill you move towards the floor.

  • @jokermf461 i am utterly amazed at how blind people are.. the BUG is when i am falling, i duck and bounce up mid-fall.

i am NOT hitting the floor. anyone with eyes can see that. hell, even a blind guy would know based on the fact of the lack of an IMPACT noise!

now please. read the annotations next time. it's not that hard.

  • @nitrohedgehog looks like you never played css or hl2 even if you dopnt see that you hit floor, you do.

  • @smolskius spparently you are blind and deaf, with exception to the end, not with did i make contact with the floor, there was never an impact noise withe the floor.

if you have annotations turned off, then turn them on, otherwise you must be illiterate.

  • @nitrohedgehog I totally agree with you, I see it. But they have a point :-D I think you could kill yourself by falling through a portal for too long. In a 2-meter high ceiling, in 20 falls that would be 40 meters fall, assuming this is on Earth, the speed in vacuum would be fast. Can't remember now how fast exactly you'd fall, but barefeet? Ow.

  • I think I'm going to be sick....

  • Lol at first I thought to my self "Its not a bug! That would happen in real life!" (I would explain why but you might already have a clue) Then i noticed that you were right.

  • yeah that happened to me to

  • Old vid but oh well.

It's the way Source engine handles crouching that makes this bug, when you croach your height is halved, when you rise your height is doubled downwards instantly which makes you hit the ground even though you hit the portal first (the raycast test gave a false negative since it still things you're half the height and so you stop. The jump pack up is the result of portals actually pushing you forward a bit when you pass through and stopping in midair.

  • @spliter88 FINALLY! someone with a brain, AND knowledge of this sort of thing.

    I applaud you sir.

  • @nitrohedgehog we have just found the rarest thing in the world,an actual working brain

  • @nitrohedgehog same thing with me im smart too :3 theres just too many stupidheads that you cant find one that actually has a real brain

  • @nitrohedgehog As always I read discript thing

  • @spliter88 TL;DR

  • @spliter88 Dang, did you code this game yourself? But thanks for clearing that up for us.

  • @spliter88 Are you.... Gordon Freeman e.e ???

  • @spliter88 you win 30 internets

  • @spliter88 Good ol' raycasting.

  • ITS A WORM HOLE!!! lol :3

  • Wow this was really helpfull

  • watch this when your stoned :)

  • its like a mirror

  • You can see maximum 9 portals at same time, so I think if u go too fast, like MokkaFergie says, Source engine slows the player.

  • Look up terminal velocity. This person should be able to fall in this configuration at quite a high rate of speed. Of course, this could be considered a big problem with entropy since one could easily use such a thing to produce infinite amounts of energy (picture a paddle wheel positioned over the portal. Now pour water through. It falls past the wheel spinning it, goes into the portal and then hits the wheel again and again... viola, energy forever).. wow I must be really sleepy.

  • @xexorz

Wow! That totally is perpetual energy and destroys physics as we know it today. Good thing portals don't...

  • never happened with me :P?

  • why can't WE have portals

  • look on the bright side.......you could get the "terminal velocity" achievement :D

  • Mind=Fucked...

  • i feel dissy now BUT I WONT LET YOU do what? MARRY DISSY ..youre insult failed

  • I think it's because you step on yourself's head in the portal space and be able to perform a jump.

  • cool glitch! ;)

  • actually, one time on the platform in the last area, i used the infinite loop to get rid of the energy ball. when i made a new portal to get past the wall, i got hit with the energy ball.

  • who the fuck divided by zero again?

  • Man one time I managed to make two orange portals. I was mesmerized, but I couldn't stop to marvel because I was being shot at by turrets from two different portals. Anyone else done that?

  • just tried this and it launched me top speed into the celing

  • did kept me on for hours!@

  • This is the way the Source engine slows the player down in an infinite loop to prevent overflow, since the maximum speed you can get in the Source engine is 110-120MPH. If you could fall forever, it would result in an overflow or a graphic crash. Just think about it, you're falling, gaining speed, until you hit a limit which is a no-go, and the game crashes. This solution is way better than crashing every time you gain too much speed.

  • @MokkaFergie actually it limits your speed just going through the portal. try loading a custom map that has a very tall platform to jump off of. i managed to fall much faster than i would in an infinite loop with the ceiling and floor in such close proximity. the bug here is when you crouch while passing through a portal, it stop you completely and pushes you back up. it would never do that if i never crouched.

  • @nitrohedgehog I believe is you are crouching and colliding against the clips of the level. Portals warp you but the clip of the wall/ floor is still there. Either crouching widens the player enough to be slowed by the clip or it interferes with the noclip properties of the wall.

  • @MokkaFergie i did it and i fall nonstop...no matter how long u fall, u never go past like...100 mph lets say...it goes on forever for me without stopping

  • @panda100123 Well maybe you have a different version which can defy the laws of physics.

  • @MokkaFergie YOU CONFUZE ME!

  • @MokkaFergie thats wrong. Going too fast isn't going to crash anything. They way they limit your speed is the same way you hit terminal velocity falling out of the sky - a constant downward acceleration is eventually cancelled out by a relative friction force ie; velocity += gravity -> velocity *= friction. soon enough this reaches an equilibrium

  • I did that once xD

  • WOW BRO, DONT LISTEN TO THESE HATERS AND TROLLS, THATS THE MOST COOLEST GLITCH IVE EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE.... baddies...

  • Infinite loop: Best mirror and elevator in the current dimension

  • what's happening is that when you're halfway through the floor portal and you crouch you change your hull size down and when you un-crouch you fly back upwards causing your hull to revert and go into the ceiling portal, causing you to fly upwards.

    in other words, GABEN.

  • feels like your in a tube

  • Yeah! Source Engine the best! :D

  • IDK but that is not quite true

My portal is original and it is working just fine ...

  • I did do this before for two straight hours. I got a stomach ache. I played this on my 360 n i have a flat screeen hd tv in my room.

  • that is definatly a bug :3

And ignore those other guys, they are just retards that didnt learn to read... or havent gotten to it yet

  • lol backwards :D

  • dude it's not a bug, if you leave it there long enough( atleast on xbox 360) u get an achievement for falling 30 000 feet like that

  • @GuitarManiacRocker how blind are you? this video isn't about an achievement. i doubt you are that stupid to miss a glaring red annotation AND the description...

  • @nitrohedgehog Hahaha. I'm not stupid, and yes, that has happened to me when it slows down and bounces up, the 2 portals are just on a different angle to each other. And no, I'm not trying to insult you like you said in your description, i didn't swear or be rude.

  • @GuitarManiacRocker nonetheless, you still missed the whole point of the video...

  • @nitrohedgehog yeh but he was trying too point out too you that its not a bug it was put there in case people get stuck in the infinite loop after getting the achievement do you even read the comment ?

  • @TekranoXx you do know that you can just reposition one of the portals right? and if that can't be done somehow, you can move in the air.

  • @nitrohedgehog yep but i got stuck even doing both those things so i had too crouch and it slowed me enough too move a portal

  • @TekranoXx that doesn't make you right but whatever...

  • BEST BUG EVAR!!

  • lol, goin down through the firey rings make me think that we're fallin through the Apeture Science building, which has had something burn holes it the floors. =]

  • Cool story, bro.

  • If you were stuck in an infinite loop, how would you get out? Wouldn't you be going at terminal velocity?

  • Also, rofl at all the tards arguing and insulting you. :3

    Such a silly lil group.

This was pretty easy to solve had you any knowledge of computers. And I mean REAL computer knowledge. As in the programming kinda and having programmed a few games. Figure these sorta things out is always fun. X3

  • Lesse, let's apply some logic here.

When you crouch, your hitbox shrinks, so when you stand back up, it enlarges, correct?

So, when you are close to a portal and stand up, you actually re-enter the top portal. Technically it's an unintended design feature of the engine. Not the physics engine, but how the hit-boxes and portals where designed. You touched the blue portal, which cause to appear to slow down and pop up in the yellow/orange one for a second before falling through.

  • you must be a fucking retarded, this isnt a bug or glitch, they`re called "physics"

and there`s a big difference between a bug and a glitch, i fucking hate retarded people like you

  • @TheHellwars i'd love to explain the error of your ways but i'm afraid you may not be able to comprehend what i am saying...

  • @nitrohedgehog its a glitch and a bug its a glitch cuz u have to do it a sertin way and is heard a bug cuz the game will not know what to do next and u will be going in and out of portals that are not on the ground or the roof (thats what happend to me)

  • @TheHellwars Read the fucking discription, you must be fucking retarded its called a "Bug" and theres a big difference between bugs/glitches and Physics. I fucking hate retarded people like you.

  • @TheHellwars you shit pipe i'm studying phyisc in University, the only thing that crouching would do to ur terminal velocity would be because of air resistance, this is a glitch because valve has worked to make sure the "physics" in this game were partly accurate. yes there may be a differnce between a bug and a glitch but who cares people came to see the video not shittalk on the title.

  • @TheHellwars You see, a portal that connects two random points is not physics. It is science fiction since it has not been declared a fact or even remotely possible. So unfortunately, you are the fucking retard.

  • @TheHellwars And I'm sure they hate you too.

  • I usually rotate my body to keep view of a vertical portal, that keeps me falling for a while. :D

  • maybe you bounce back up because you crouching slows you down and you probably hit your own head and that stops you and bounces you back

  • Why do we do this? Because phooling with physics is phun.

  • that'd be handy if you'd fall off a building

  • wtf is the difference betwenn a glitch and a bug???

  • none really. some people just like to argue over petty differences while missing the point of the video.

  • @nitrohedgehog I think "bug" might mean something of a higher magnitude, while "glitch" seems to be something that doesn't interfere? Or perhaps that bug actually refers to a problem in the software, while a glitch refers more to the obvious effects of said bug?

I know it's unimportant, but it did make me suddenly realize that I'm not consciously aware of the difference between a bug and a glitch.

If people are actually getting irritated with you over that, then ignore them, though, haha...

  • @ShadowrealHedgehog

a bug makes the game less fun and a glitch makes the game more fun. just look at Modern warfare 1, TONS of glitches and they're AWSOME

  • that's pretty cool

  • its a fun way to fuck with physics

  • I love this game. (:

Also the internet game to. (:

  • and what I think whats interesting about is that all of the portals are yellow
