wow, theres so many adverse comments on this page, listen guys you should enjoy this for what it is, This man had the passion and commitment to be the best at what he did. whether thats knocking out teeth or perfecting and organising your Kata to music in this manner . its all done by hard work. also he was most probably the reason those big tough guys in there 30s and early 40s that are knocking people out, to actually take up martial arts in the first place.
This is the first time i seen him do a form, it's incredible! I just saw someone do a copy of his form, that kid didn't come close to what Jean has done.

The 1st time i saw him i was like WTF !?!?!? He's the original champion of musical form. Not only flexible but he fallow the rhythm of the music. On the top of that they are clean, well balanced and powerful moved. To day the moves are a lot more acrobatic but it look more like gymnastic than martial arts.

Hello, I live and train in the Netherlands and met and trained with Jean several times during the '90's. I He was "ahead of his time" and received many critics form the 'traditionalist'. However, real traditionalist should know that kata originates in 'Kumi dancing", so putting some music into it is not that strange. And Jean stimulated hundreds of children to take kata training serious. Further let's just enjoy his performances.
All the experts that talk about what Katas should be and Jean is fighting guys ten feet tall - apparently you cant do the math. Jean is 5 foot 6 and one half inches tall his kicks would be to a mans face who is approximately 6 feet to 6 feet two. Oh by the way Kata means "formal exercise" and I would say that what Jean Frenette is doing constitutes exercise - The guy is a five time world champion, and if you do a little research you will see is a a true martial artist in every sense of the word.
I think this is very good compromise between traditional kata and the show. He requires full force to do all the strikes and kicks. And he is 5`6", so he needed to kick high due to his sparring competitions(5 times world karate champion, WAKO). He is also mastering his traditional karate styles and is visiting old Okinawa masters to develop his knowledge. Tell me, how many of todays music forms champs can do traditional kata in regular way...
he is good but the thing is kata is made to IMAGINE YOU HAVE AN OPPONENT. i ont think he made it realistic. his kicks are excellence and balance as well as flexibility but this video is more on show off and unrealistic. he has probably fighting to 1000 people and they are 10 feet tall lol.
I would like to see those "imaginary enemys" he fights in this kata. There must be like 40 of them, and some had to be at least 2,40 meters compared to the hight oh his kicks ;)

I already took a course of karate within his school Sankudo. Just to say that he is arrogant and very proud of being himself. Doesnt care of the newbie, just there cash. I really learn a lot but not by him but one of his best apprentice.
This is the musical form to end all musical forms. And do you know why? It's filled WITH ACTUAL TECHNIQUES. That you can clearly see, beautiful kicks as well, unlike those modern day musical forms, it's just a bunch of bullshit flipping and no technique at all. It would be better suited if it was a gymnastic musical competition, but not a martial arts form competition. Oh well. Jean Frenette was the prototype for the musical kata, and no one will top him.

katas was made long time ago for training with out needing a partner.martial arts masters put they knowledge in this katas for the student to learn faster repeating it imagining the opponent. (similar to Shadow Boxing)
He appears to be a very good Goju Ryu stylist. It's very surprising to me how he's able to have been a forms champion with him being in Goju Ryu. But, because of the style, it translates well into his artistic expression. He looks more hardcore now as a baldy then when he had hair. Hello, I live and train in the Netherlands and met and trained with Jean several times during the '90's. I He was "ahead of his time" and received many critics form the 'traditionalist'. However, real traditionalist should know that kata originates in 'Kumi dancing", so putting some music into it is not that strange. And Jean stimulated hundreds of children to take kata training serious. Further let's just enjoy his performances.

All the experts that talk about what Katas should be and Jean is fighting guys ten feet tall - apparently you cant do the math. Jean is 5 foot 6 and one half inches tall his kicks would be to a mans face who is approximately 6 feet to 6 feet two. Oh by the way Kata means "formal exercise" and I would say that what Jean Frenette is doing constitutes exercise - The guy is a five time world champion, and if you do a little research you will see is a a true martial artist in every sense of the word.

I think this is very good compromise between traditional kata and the show. He requires full force to do all the strikes and kicks. And he is 5`6", so he needed to kick high due to his sparring competitions(5 times world karate champion, WAKO). He is also mastering his traditional karate styles and is visiting old Okinawa masters to develop his knowledge. Tell me, how many of todays music forms champs can do traditional kata in regular way...

he is good but the thing is kata is made to IMAGINE YOU HAVE AN OPPONENT. i ont think he made it realistic. his kicks are excellence and balance as well as flexibility but this video is more on show off and unrealistic. he has probably fighting to 1000 people and they are 10 feet tall lol.

This is the musical form to end all musical forms. And do you know why? It's filled WITH ACTUAL TECHNIQUES. That you can clearly see, beautiful kicks as well, unlike those modern day musical forms, it's just a bunch of bullshit flipping and no technique at all. It would be better suited if it was a gymnastic musical competition, but not a martial arts form competition. Oh well. Jean Frenette was the prototype for the musical kata, and no one will top him.

katas was made long time ago for training with out needing a partner.martial arts masters put they knowledge in this katas for the student to learn faster repeating it imagining the opponent. (similar to Shadow Boxing)

He appears to be a very good Goju Ryu stylist. It's very surprising to me how he's able to have been a forms champion with him being in Goju Ryu. But, because of the style, it translates well into his artistic expression. He looks more hardcore now as a baldy then when he had hair. With the receeding hairline, he looked like a crazy Canadian. *heheh*. Not offense to any Canadians who read this. I had a friend who is part-Canadian and she and I would toss back taunts about Canada and the USA.

What the heck is this? A musical? Do you have full contact fight clips of him (.ie. KK, KB, MT rules or whatever, no point-sparring bull though)? If so, post them here, and I will be impressed.
