@nicola00004 1994. Brundle was slowing with a car problem, Barnard was busy watching him and didn't notice he was being lapped by Irvine\Verstappen, causing them to move further to the right (Irvine did it more suddenly, Verstappen responded by jinking towards the grass and spun back into their path).
he meant to do it. The guy shunts him so he thinks fuck you and hits him. And look at his head at the end he turns his head and says "Yes, I hit the bastard"
the mclaren lost the engine and started to slow down, The Ligeir wascatching the Mclaren, Irvine was approaching faster and jinked left to avoid but Verstappen had a run on him and was attempting to pass. No ones fault just a racing accident.
@panik808 Irvine moved over suddenly at high speed, whereas Barnard and Verstappen's lines weren't nearly as erratic. At 190mph it's dangerous to pull out like that.
@darthbandon10 Actually I should have said that Irvine was approaching the Ligeir fast and was attempting to pass but at the same time the Verstappen was faster. Irvine did not know Verstappen was that far along side him when he made the move.
Why are people blaming Irvine? The car being lapped is clearly at fault for not making way for overtaking drivers. The white line and grass verge is extremely slippery and frequently damp.
after this crash, villeneuve in australia 2001, patresse 1993, fittipaldi 1991, ralf schumacher 2002 and webber 2010 i realized that f1 cars can fly.....
Ok, so Martin Brundle very nearly dies again after his horrible crash in Monaco 1984, and is yet to have another miraculous escape from a crash that could've quite easily killed him in Australia 1996.
Irvine made another mess at Italy that year, taking off Herbert's Lotus (which was powerd with a brand new Mugen Honda engine, that allowed Johnny to take a superb 4th place in qualifying) at first chicane. That caused a chain reaction at the back of the field, and the race was stopped.
This is one of those crashes that's as horrific as Ratzenberger's. Brundle suffered mild brain damamge and memory loss from this, but he was lucky not to be decapitated.
Ah the common YouTube debater. If I was in his shoes it probably would have snapped my neck... and I'm sure it would yours as well. Nerves don't come into it.
Because the muscles in their neck are built up to withstand the g-forces. He told F1 BBC last season before Brazil that it concussed him and gave him mild brain damage. Take into account that Benneton weighs atleast half a tonne, it was a fully pressured spinning tyre that struck him and he wasn't braced for the impact.
The video should be fairly clear. Big thing hits him in the head, neck's only flesh and bone. But whatever, it really shouldn't mean that much to you.
@John27346 Ratzenberger's neck was snapped. Pryce in a freak, although similarly hit in in the head with a heavy object, neck snapped. Difference being they were forward impacts not side on. Simple.
yes people have been decapitated before in F1, hmm...Cevert had his head smashed in with a 40 pound fire extinguisher..one guy was truly decapitated, can't remember his name..must've been in the 60s, and another driver was torn in half after crashing into poorly erected Armco guard rails.
yeah, you can see a natsy video on you tube of that. one f1 driver who defo did suffer such a fate was helmuth koenigg when the bottom of the armco gave way but not the top when he crashed into it.
Brundle should be sticking to the white line to give room, and Barnard needs to keep his foot down and get past quickly. Barnard also moved down on Irvine.
If the leaders had more room there wouldn't have been such a mess.
I was shaken to the core when I saw Brundle's head being his by Verstappen's rear tyre. It's a miracle he didn't suffer serious head injuries or worse...
he actually said that problems he has while commentating come from that crash, as well as one in 1984, at Monaco, when his head hit the guardrail and the track
Why is it a bad crash for Irvine? Brundle got hit on the head by one of their wheels...
