  • Truth be told, blaze and townes were trying to outrun a state trooper, and tho blaze surrendered, his flask was mistaken for a weapon. The bullet pierced blaze' testicle, ricocheted off tvz' spur and lodged itself into Tom waits sister's ovaries. Today we know him as Justin beiber.

  • This is a great up! Thank you:D

  • This is great, great sadness

  • ...yeah, and i'm Blaze's father

  • Why does everyone just believe what gozuichi said? There's no proof at all, and if you look through his channel comments you can see he just trolls videos with stupid or offensive comments!

  • Gozulchi... Blaze thought he and I were kin. That's how we met. From behind he jabbed me in the ribs while I was watching Rusty Wier sing. I turned around in angst and said "get lost"! "He said my name is Michael Fuller and I think were kin." As I looked at him I could see he looked more like my own father than I did! People would say my dad looked like Jack Elam the actor. Blaze looked a lot more like Jack Elam than I did. We became close friends for a good solid 4 years after that.

  • Hey, son of Blaze, did you ever get those tapes out? Did he have a publishing company?? You should protect the rights of your fathers legacy. I am a songwriter, and hope the world has a chance to hear all he left behind. But you should make sure his intellectual property is cataloged before you give it away or get it out there.

if you have any questions you can contact me.

  • gawd damned this is fucking good shit....

Great country feel, these artists will linger on through Time Forever!..:-)

  • Don't buy that Dust Bowl /Joad Family Schtick-it belied the heart of a Coyote carrying off an infant .I spent my food money on a brick of Agfa Pan 400,the chemicals to push process the shots I took for him & another singer in Austin. With close to 70% keepers & another 40 % Pulitzer material if not album cover worthy. After showing the contact sheets - he picked the ones I knew he would Townes said just turn them w/ negs over because his agent controls his image & I was lucky he didn't sue.RIP SOB

  • These are musicians with a great love for her music. Thank you for this video with Townes van Zandt - a great songwriter, a great musician and a great man.

  • Gidday,

You may not be connected to this link a year on (I have just come to it), but know that Blaze Foley is loved in the the moment of his songs, and half way round the world in New Zealand we love him for the truth and beauty of his lyrics.

    Take Care.

  • Two badass songwriters! For those who aren't familiar with Blaze, get the album Cold Cold World.

  • beautiful and heartbreaking

  • Why must alcohol consume so many artists? Wonderful music.

  • For gozuichi, maybe you could get hold of Guy Clark, present him with what you have, maybe he could get you started in the right direction, recording what you have into CD form sell them...Just a thought..So much treasure you must have..

  • Blaze walked up behind me poked me in the ribs. I turned around and looked up!Then he said "I think we're kin". I said 'what?" He repeated "I think we're kin", Turns out we had the same last name. We were good buddies from then on. I even shot one of his CD jackets. News of his death, his buddies, me, we went out and got tanked in his honor. Blaze was a good guy most of the time. Cantancerous a lot of the time. I could talk nine years worth about Blaze. Only a few months about Townes. Miss both.

  • towne and blaze wrote real cowboy music not double knit not truck drivin just real cowboy music cyotes and fuul moons

  • @ gozuichi Do not give those tapes to FB. They are your Father's legacy. They are as valuable as money. You need to speak to someone who can teach you about your rights. Don't post them out through FB then they become FB property.

  • Yes thank you very much, I would Love to have them, I am Dale Robertson I was a friend of Townes Van Zandt and I met you dad Once or twice.

  • 2 great singer song writers. To bad they are not with us any longer but at lest they are not fighting their demands anymore!

  • I wish YouTube had a LOVE button instead of a LIKE button. Like does not cover my admiration for Townes or this song.

  • it brings tears to watch this. i use to be in the audience when i could, those days are gone.....

  • that flute is what makes the song for me, and all the haunting tracks from the nashville show documented in Live and Obscure -- Townes knew what he was doing; beautiful and always staring into the abyss. perfect balance.

  • "RIP, although I doubt he ever will."

Hilarious, "Joeyland". Sad, yes, but still true. Like about all of Townes' songs.

  • I always hear that stupid flute player and it just ruins it for me lol

  • i gotta agree with you about the flute, still amazing though

  • Great work Edward!! Hank B

  • This song is called "Snowin' on Raton" for those who do not know the title. Not sure if it's mentioned here...

  • Townes was an American treasure, RIP, although I doubt he ever will.

  • @Joeyland This happens to be two American Treasures. Blaze Foley was one with a true heart. RIP mike. my childhood friend.

  • not thats a songwriter

  • Great video! Does anyone remember Townes and Blaze playing at the now long gone Spellman's that was on 5th Street between Lamar and Mopac back in the late '70s/early '80s? One of my favorite dives. Austin's still great, but I miss the "old" Austin and the old dives.

  • Ego's rules

  • A lot of Interest from Holland too.

  • I have only discovered this man's work recently and love it to bits...:-)

I am from Holland too, but i just can't remember his music coming through to us over there at the time..

    Groeten uit New Zealand,

    Rineke.

  • He once played a concert in the MELKWEG, also called"the Milcky Way" in Amsterdam. It´s a well known concert hall in Amsterdam with so god dam´ many artists performin´ every year. The whole concert was filmed and put on DVD. The DVD ( it has regional code 0 and NSTC Video Format, so it can be seen on nearly all DVD players. ) can be bought via the online shop on the TVZ web side run by his former wife Jeanene van Zandt.

  • does anyone know the chords to this song?

  • e,b7 a

  • I was born in the wrong place, at the wrong time. I wanna cry each time I hear this song. Townes was the best.

  • My Father is Blaze Foley. I never knew people liked his music so much till now. I have a slew of tapes and reels of him singing. Would anybody be interested in me giving them to you? I'm sure Dad would be happy for everybody watching his videos. Thank you all.

  • Thank god for your Father and You....I am very interested in seeing more on Blaze. I am currently working with a photographer here in Austin who has some great shots of your father. in the early years. and of course his duct tape....Your father was a great artist and I would love to let me people know of his talent....

  • Hey Silver...any prints of those photos for sale? Looking for cool B/Ws to put in my bar.

  • i was just this morning turned on to this amazing performer. it was womr in provincetown. the dh would be very happy to have some of those tapes. or i would be proud to own them, myself.. you might also try to connect with wfmu in jersey city, they have dj's that would love this stuff, wouldn't surprise me if they already know about him.

  • What a git her left you then Gozuichi, perhaps a studio would be inbterested in producing them. You should ask around.

    God bless

  • There are a lot of folks who would love to hear those tapes. I don't know if I can connect you with anyone who could do that.....actually, I might know of someone....I will get back to you.

  • Absolutely! Are you kidding? Holy cow!

  • @gozuichi i would love to have blaze foley tapes! things like that needs to be taken care of, and shared...

  • @gozuichi he is amazing and this is the truest of music

  • @gozuichi I think you should find an honest music industry lawyer. Blaze got screwed over enough, and no sense you gettin' a new one ripped by givin' his art away, lol.

  • @gozuichi BS artist

  • @gozuichi Just recently discovered Townes van zandt...and if there is one thing I've learned...anyone associated with him are incredibley giffted artists...and I say artists as there is a great difference between artists and "entertainers". Maybe start a facebbok site with info on your father. You'll be surprised at how the circle of Country Folk fans will search Blaze Foley and end up at your internet doorstep. Good Luck..and I'll be searching now for Blaze foley recordings..God Bless

  • @gozuichi Give a try at a facebook site. I've now taken notice of Blaze Foley because I was searching for Townes Van zandt songs. Good luck. I'll bve searching for your father's songs now.

  • @gozuichi Hi there. I was wondering what you ended up doing with your father's tapes. Has anyone posted them to youtube? I sure would love to hear them.

  • @gozuichi in an interview, the lead singer from the kings of leon, the biggest band in the world listed blaze foley as the first musician to make him cry in a long time. its on youtube somwhere i will try and find it. your father is a lot bigger than u think

  • @gozuichi Do you still have any of those tapes or reels? I would be extremely grateful to even have one or two of them. We showed the rough cut of the documentary of him at our camp at the Kerrville Folk Festival.

  • @gozuichi ..Don't be foolish and give away your fathers legacy. There are people that will pay you to have these precious treasures.

  • @gozuichi Hi -- Mary is right, but definitely don't give them to Guy (I can explain later, nothing bad about Guy, he just didn't get along with Blaze). I can connect you with Blaze's sister (your aunt). She would love to hear from you and can guide you in what to do with your recordings. -- Kevin in Austin

  • @gozuichi those tapes would be amazing to have.

  • @gozuichi , i would love to have, at least, copies of these tapes. I am an American singer/songwriter presently living in Ireland. email erinmaidin@aol.com if this is possible

  • @erinmaidin Where in Ireland are you? I have family in Dundalk

  • @gozuichi Are you kidding? Please??

  • @gozuichi Take them to a record company. You might get some money for them.

  • @gozuichi Yea, ain't it cool that he's getting so much recognition after all!? I bought the Lp he made with Gurf Morlix of Gurf when he where in Leicester an played a while ago... And he spoke really warm about he's ol' buddy Blaise over and over and boosting his music bigtime! And I think it's pretty cool also because I where living like a hobo for 18 years myself, and now when things is differnt I keep playing musik! Blaze is some kinda rollmodell for me now!! :)

  • @gozuichi I think you would be astounded at the number of people who would be very grateful if you posted more of your Dad's stuff. I have a couple songs I video'd when I met him at a roadhouse outside Austin and had the honor to play and sing a few with him -- truly an incredible high point in my life. I think you should publish them and sell them on CD Baby and/or Amazon. I'll be your first customer. Your Dad was legendary. God bless him.

  • @gozuichi

  • @gozuichi I agree with the post before mine. Sell them. I'm sure he'd want to benefit you. He was legendary.

  • @gozuichi I would love to see/hear what you have. I've spoken to Towne's son and to to Wrecks Bell. Both say that there are lots of unreleased tapes and videos of Blaze out there. Please let me know what you have.

  • @gozuichi Wow...you're Blazes kid? Seriously? What a legacy! So sorry for your loss.

  • @gozuichi Thank you for sharing. My parents are Drunken Angels, too..

  • @gozuichi Are you serios?!?! I would love to hear some old Blaze Foley!

  • @gozuichi Yes, that would be great! Please, share them.

  • Blaze Foley (real name Michael David Fuller) is who Lucinda Williams wrote "Drunken Angel" about. He didn't have duct tape shoes like in the song's lyrics, but he had cowboy boots with duct tape on the toes, & a coat made of duct tape. BTW, ignore the comment by the troll "gozuichi". Blaze Foley never had kids.

  • @Smudgefizz I'm not sure why my message was removed..maybe I did it:) I'm sure it was in praise of this performance. I'm a longtime fan of these boys. Watching em sing together is well just plain heavenly to me. The fellow that made the wonderful documentary on Blaze has a nice Duct Tape coat someone made for him. Blaze was a hell of a songwriter..I suppose Blaze's kids are those songs he sent out into the world each growing in its own funky beautiful way..Take it easy Smudgefizz..

  • @gozuichi please please from Dublin Ireland

  • @gozuichi yeah hook me up

  • There's still music like this around; too bad the Industry doesn't know it!

  • Great song, the flute only works in the 1980s! :)

  • This is what music is about. It just doesn't get any better than this. Christ! The beauty of it all just kills me. Two of the best; now gone. And we're poorer for it. R I P boys. Catch ya on the next train.

  • I am with you brother

  • a great hobo and a genius musician singing together. heartbreaking. thanks for posting this!

  • BLAZE FOLEY-o-RAMA October 17 @ Ruta Maya benefiting Austin Resource Center for The Homeless. We are printing Blaze shirts to benefit ARCH. More details on the lineup as she comes...

  • does anyone know from which townes album the original version of this song comes?

  • The original version of Snowin' On Raton came from his 1987 album 'At My Window'.

    WE

  • I had to listen again, dry the tears and post: The unity of these two guys, the verses' as they echo in my mind, leaves a vacant spot that the mournful flute strains to fulfill..what a nice memory........RIP.............love ya, Randy

  • I think,as I've been told, that Townes had just come out of the Austin State Hospital (after a brief stay for...??? Self imposed?). Blaze stepped up and helped his Bud,Townes, through this song....

  • Thanks 4 adding the finishing touches to the notes of this great pair..I appreciate the info.

as will others who read this.........Randy

  • what a writer townes is no wonder steve earle called him the greatest songwriter in the world,he said he would stand on bob dylans coffee table in his cowboy boots and say that.

  • Where would I get a copy of this video with Townes and Blaze etc. It would also be nice if PBS would release Townes 1975 Austin City LIMITS episode, like they did of Steve Goodman from the same time frame. Thanks for posting these fantastic videos

  • Thanks for posting this, this guy was something else ..

  • Wonderful video. One of my favorite songs from one of my favorite artists. Thanks for posting. This is a 5 !

  • Townes did Country music to perfection, as well as blues. Anyone who thinks they're playing it better today is mistaken.

  • word.

  • Never heard this one before. I was there in the beginning when he played my coffeehouse in OKC. I brought him in when the pilot of Townes' daddy recommended him to play the Sword & Stone - OKC.

  • Tell us more about the Sword and Stone

  • The Sword and Stone coffeehouse was located at 7th and N. Harvey in OKC for 9 years. It was owned and operated by my ex-husband, Ed Henthorn and myself, Jai B'. We had local performers as well as the Texas circuit perform there. Great people like Mance Lipscomb, Townes, Guy Clark, Ray Wylie Hubbard, etc. Thanks for asking.

  • Ah that must have been a wonderful musical time, late 60's, ealy 70's? Did you say you got Townes through his fathers pilot?

  • Those were the good old days. A lot of people still want them back. Yes, Bruce Crockett was the company pilot who recommended Townes to play the S&S. So, I took his advice. I have an original tape of one of his sets at the S&S that was put on CD.

  • I have a collection of cds from various unreleased sets that Townes played over the years. Are you at all interested in a trade? What years are you talking about? Cheers Dugald

  • I have old tapes that are dated 1970-71. One of them had to be repaired. I am getting ready to donate them to the OHC oral history dept. The less they are handled the better. I'm not interested in any more CDs. Thank you, anyway.

  • No problem . I thought from you earlier comments you were keen to get your part in Townes history recognised. Apart from my personal wish to hear more of his output from the early days I know his "last" ex wife would be interested to hear your memories as she is trying to create a coherent record of his work. I can pass on her contact details if you like. Cheers Dugald

  • She may contact me. I only knew Townes' first wife, Fran, the mother of his son. I realize the S&S is not mentioned in any of his memoirs. I have a few stories.

  • Heartbreaking stuff.

  • Listen to Live at Union Chapel, London, England. On disc 2, track3, Townes tells the story of how Blaze (murdered on the streets of Austin) wasn't expecting anything to happen to him but said, "If something does happen to me, I want you to have my guitar." Well Blaze had pawned the guitar and got buried with the ticket in the pocket of his one suit coat and Townes dug him up and wrote the following track, Blaze's Blues on that guitar. A song that is worth learning for Texas musicians.

  • That flute's funny. It's like the harpsichord on some of those early Townes recordings. The congas, too. What their purpose on something like "For the Sake of the Song," I don't know, but they were really pretty, strange complementary sounds.

  • Think some of the old stuff (on Tomato label) was a bit overproduced-- not terrible, but not great--at least it didn't overshadow the strength of his performance-- like the arrangements on "High Low and in Between"much better...

  • Right on 1109!! He is a poet who also happens to play guitar and sing brilliantly. The finest lyrics I've ever seen. Period.

  • I have been fortunate enough to have listened to Townes for many years, and I believe that he was the best song-writer EVER. I don't think he ever missed a lyrin in any song he ever wrote. Every line was perfect. He will be missed, but at least we had him for the time we did. He was and always will be a blessing to music.

    Thanks---Steve

  • If God made a better songwriter then Townes, he kept him for himself

  • Two drunken angels. Thanks for sharing.

  • There are very few songwriters that can compare to these guys. And I would rate Townes Van Zandt as possibly the best folk songwriter of the 20th century, along with Woody Guthrie.

  • Awesome, classic old Townes. Maybe the best songwriter of the last 30 years?? So moving.

  • Absolutely the best songwriter Texas ever produced. And Texas has produced a lot of amazing songwriters.

  • What a shame both of these guys are no longer with us. Robert Earl Keen does a version of this song that is touching. Thanks for these unreal videos.

  • mmmm, snowin on raton.
