  • Great song and sentiment. Brothers and sisters, what a time that was!! Creative music on the airwaves and in the streets along with the smell of ham and gas.

  • I used to think this song was just a piece of 60's history until I lost my job, my insurance, my home and my dignity. Now I'm ready to join the people in the streets and waste some Wall Street Pigs where they stand. Up against the walls motherfuckers.

  • quite melodic i can groove on this

  • Ron Paul 2012 RLOVEUTION

  • Merry Christmas every one! This world is getting crazier by the day. Even if its for one day, lets be together. I stand for Love&Happiness! Take Care :)

  • SAY NO 2 WAR

  • GOD BLESS THE WORLD. PEACE

  • Great song! Really identified with it then and still do now. Got a lot of airplay "back in the day" until word got out about the f-bombs in the lyrics.

  • Planetterrible,

Amen and amen. I'm a conservative, so I guess that makes me the enemy. My conservatism is not based on political party, but personal responsibility. Most of us in the 60's, and the "occupiers" wanted the fruit but we didn't want the trouble of planting and harvesting. More gimme gimme gimme. That fails every time. Work rules. Disagree with the next guy? Work harder than him... Works every time - no pun intended.

  • Jorma Kaukonen was Great on that Lead guitar!

  • I agree PumaTwoU - the USA is being run by a shadow government - called the Dem-ublicans!

    Go Libertarians!

This sounds like the Occupy Wall Street-ers anthem, a great song, but a bit silly seeming today, yet it shows the current occupiers ain't nothin' new, and aren't into a "tear down the wall" approach, as much as wanting the goodies behind it for themselves (this is exactly how the idealists from the 60's sold out!). When will we learn to change the system (any system) by not feeding it?!

  • PEACE! MAKE LOVE NOT WAR. NO MORE VIOLENCE ON OUR STREETS OR ANY OTHERS. I'VE HAD ENOUGH AFTER 60 YEARS. I HAVE NOT SOLD OUT. I DON'T APPRECIATE BEING PLACED IN THAT CATEGORY BUT I DO LOVE MY COUNTRY AND GOD.

  • @13elowe I'm afraid the time is coming again, look to history. Then if you're not part of the solution, then you are part of the problem. Move Over and let us run, stay out of the way and you wont get hurt. I am april baby of the year 1956 and I have always loved this country since my first pledge of allegiance with "one nation under god."

  • PEACE!

  • God Bless Jefferson Airplane, Always and Forever

  • this music comes from love, so love should be given back, i used to say, What happened to america, but now i say Love is it, Love is the only way it will ever work, same as it ever was, drop your hate, its useless...lets love the hate to death, this is what i say, amen. by the way, i Love you more than you will ever know.

  • Occupy Wall street :D

  • not all of us have the comforts as those who are livin free on the amerikan dollar. Given to them freely by relatives & husbands and whatnot. No work involved in gettin there just livin easy and those of us who actually work and TRY (!!) dont always know how we're gonna put food on the table.(NO welfare here!! Just workers) TEAR DOWN THEIR WALL MOTHERFUCKERS!! they"...."them".,,,,,etc etc,EQUALITY means equality for ALL people. Not just those who are livin good. EAT THE RICH!!!

  • @donnaslater2011 Oh mt gawd! THANK YOU for putting that out there. Definitely comes from Bush and even now the rednecky bastards who carry it on . Its just Neo-McCarthyism or..somethin. Im actually afraid to talk about my political bias with certain people. (I live in the south ,,,,sadly :(( ) So,,,yea,,,,I didnt vote for Obama or McCain. I will NOT say who I voted for. I will ...WILL...be harassed here. Have been many times. Lets just hope in the positive &hope for a better way SOON. Peace

  • NOW MORE THAN EVER !!!!

    (I'm a 60 yo lawyer ...)

Folks, it's time, reckoning time -- for an accumulation of abuses against the 99%..

  • The left today sucks, a bunch of communist rejects, nothing more than the participation trophy generation realizing they were duped and lied to.

  • nobody wants to stand up today. what happend?

  • LoL - you dirtheads are smokin' you own dooky.

Get a haircut, get a shower (w/ SOAP), and get a job.

If I had a tractor, I'd plow all you dirtheads over and send you off to landfill where your dead ass might serve a better purpose.

    Catchy toon though, crappy lyrics.

  • What it happening in New York, all over the counrty, Occupy USA, and all over the world, is much better that what we did in the 1960s and 70s. This time we have a better chance of tearing down the walls of corporate/financial capitalism, but it is not going to happen over night. We can be Together! We can Occupy Together!

  • This is a perfect song for what's happening today in NYC and all over America.

  • ''Up against the walllll!! Up against the wallllllll-motherf***er!!!!!!!''

  • Great riff... Jorma weaving in and out...powerful 3 part harmony, a call to arms...as for politics? Key line: "and young!"

  • The left got big in the 6os for one reason. The draft. Bring it back and watch the left rise from the grave.

  • This is what real patriotism is about.

  • There's two ways you can grow old - become more conservative and vegetate - or get more radical and live.

  • I was born in '74 an I am Irish, however 'Airplane are the best! Thanks Grace!

  • BEAUTIFUL SONG

  • Madison, Wi. 1969-1970. The police have armored vehicles patroling the Mifflin student ghetto area and the air is filled with tear gas along with the sounds of We Can Be Together by Jefferson Airplane at very high volume . Their concert at the UW Fieldhouse in May 1970 was a premier JA performance and experience for the entire community. They played at their best for 3.5 hours and then went down to The Nitty Gritty bar and jammed till 4am. HEAVEN !

  • 1 person voted for nixon

  • up against the wall, motherfucker

  • I remember when you could turn on the radio and hear about 45 minutes of this and similar. Then the DJ would come on and say- "yeah- can you dig that? that was the Airplane, Hendrix, and Zappa. Far out...." No commercials, no corporations, just a stoned hippie and you playing music.

  • @curiousnomad

I wish I could find a music station that still did that... I feel like I was born too late.

  • @curiousnomad

Yeah, and now that is gone forever and today's "music" is sometimes hard to listen to. I think the right wing had a hand in it -ending "subversive" music.

  • @curiousnomad in the dc are it was WHFS

  • @d1sailer area

  • Okay im only 14, but im in love with this song and all of the oldies music! my mom is 50 and she used to be a hippie and this music lives on andd this is all we listen too! I miss back then! I wish the world could be a peaceful place!

  • @xosamisceneheartxo If your mum is 50, she wasn't old enough to be a hippy.

  • LOVE this song!

  • I absolutely love this song. It empowers me to try and make a change in this fucked up world.

  • THE statement of the true Hippie dream and vision. Far away as it seems sometimes, it's still as close as we could reach, ok, with a BIT of reaching. It's been obfuscated and drowned out with noise, but it's still there, and it's still there to be HAD. We can - and have, even if agonizingly slowly been moving towards it- We can get there. Paul McCartney said 'I don't see the Sixties as a time in the past, but a time in the future.' They've done a lot to scatter us, but WE CAN BE TOGETHER. YOUnME

  • Is our generation responsible for people like call me Dave and his toy puppet

  • I actually heard this on the radio today (K-SHE--St. Louis).....what an awesome anthem indeed!! Been WAY too long since I've gotten "Volunteers" out for spin.....JA was amazing!!!

  • That's some real talk, Kev.

  • Ahhh it hurts so much to hear this song. To feel once more the spirit of times long gone. The spirit that was lost and that will never return. Look around you. It will never ever return.

  • solidarity with all of you old folk! I'm only 25!

  • ☮ & ♥

  • The spirit still burns in my heart. I will NEVER abandon the hope we all had in the 60s. We as humans have been blessed with so very much. Please WORLD STOP THE MADDNESS!!!!!!!!!

  • @MsWS6 I agree with MsWS6 and zoomustard. I'm 60, but willing to take it to the streets again. Today's conservatives are even worse than Nixon.

  • @Jaycubb22 To generalize it like that man, that's kind of cold.

  • @mrjokioo I notice you offered nothing that contradicts what I said.

  • @Jaycubb22 In 100%agreement...it's time once again to rise up and demand the changes we must have in order to survive...

  • @tsb1954 It's been so long, I forgot what I wrote. I glad it was agreeable to someone!:-)

  • @Jaycubb22 Yes, Brother - you are so very right! What has happened to the movement started in the 60's and 70's? The New Right is venomous!

  • @agourabb I agree. I can't believe how stupidly right wing this country has become. Difficult to watch middle class idiots vote repeatedly against their own best interests.

  • @Jaycubb22 re: "middle class idiots vote repeatedly against their own best interests." Yes, it's the "against their own interests" part that amazes me - it's like they are "above it all" or just don't get it . . . have they all forgotten the fairness and equality and compassion this country stands for???? Duped by talk of how giving more money to "the rich" will help us all - Huh? That has never worked!

  • @Jaycubb22 todays counterfeit conservatives are the ones who backstabbed us then

  • @louiethesyrian And they've never stopped!

  • I'm 60 and ready to do it again. In fact it's more critical than before.

All machines feed the furnace. If they take us they will burn us.

  • I'm 60 and ready to do it again. In fact it's more critical than before.

Our machines feed the furnace. If they take us they will burn us.

  • JESUSDIE4UAMEN.

  • We are obscene, lawless, hideous, dangerous dirty, violent, AND YOUNG! ( this happens when i've been drinking)

  • @bigredoneder i fucking love your comment. cos i rings a few bells

  • We are obscene, hideous, dangerous, dirty, violent, AND YOUNG!

  • repped for the bitter truth.

  • omg this is grate ...

  • UP AGAINST THE WALL! up against the wall motherfucker~~

  • I lived through this once before. We felt we had to change the world to make it better, so we set out to. Some folks sold out- bought into the system, and forgot what the fight was about. Now we are in a country being run by a shadow government, who not only does not care about democracy, but cares for nothing more than money. Recent events have sparked the start of recognition that

WE DO NOT HAVE TO TAKE THIS.

Our country is in greater danger now than it was in the 60's or any other time.

  • @PumaTwoU

“Every revolution evaporates and leaves behind only the slime of a new bureaucracy.” - Franz Kafka

The thing people never realize is:

The opportunist always follows, and usurps, the idealist. It is the nature of the beast and can be no other way The idealist can not become ruthless enough to thwart the opportunist without becoming an opportunist, too.

  • @Asilazi This is why all modern European art is either depressing or tepid.

  • @PumaTwoU Agreed. Let's hope we can find a Lyndon B. Johnson and a Robert McNamara to pull us out of this mess.

  • This song had an air of danger in dangerous times. Looks like dangerous times will soon be revisited.

  • Tripped on acid to this album in Melbourne Auztralia in 1980. Will never forget it Love peace and revolution (still)

  • back then we listened to this and did ludes!!

  • this music and ludes!!

  • How is this not the same riff and rhythm from Volunteers?

  • @Exilemainstreet id you ever listen to volunteers the songs morph into each other volunteers to this song.

  • @dawnsal I've never heard the whole record. That's cool then because they're establishing a musical "theme."

  • Apathetic: "Showing or feeling no interest, enthusiasm, or concern."

Tautology? Or was that the point? Either way, you read my post/comment/etc. wrong. Not having a reason or inspiration to do something ain't the same as apathy.

  • What is meant by the statement from bopbopbobert? Which mess? There are many. It seems many people have understood what was meant and I was just wondering if someone could clarify that.

  • WE ARE FORCES OF CHAOS AND ANARCHY, EVERYTHING THEY SAY WE ARE WE ARE

  • but music is art and art transcends political bs , but this tune could be sung for a different reason today for sure

  • I used this song for a slide presentation in my "Poetrey in Rock Music" English elective class in my Senior year in high school in Milpitas, CA in 1974. I was worried about the MF word but, I got a A from my teacher and applause from the class. Still love this song. I think I have the album in my collection, somewhere.

  • Remind me to add this to my vinyl collection.

    This song is so good.

  • Damn! Who is this edteachone asshole? Whatever happened, or could've happened, in the 60's was completely lost on that individual. Well, I was there, it was our time, and it'll all have to be done, again. Tear down the wall, motherfucker! I had Viet Nam, and now we're wasting a whole new generation in Iraq, Afganistan, and who knows where else. Anybody else miss those concerts at the (SF) Filmore? Have fun, "comrades". Now, where'd I put that roach clip?

  • @pobouyone

yup, the caveat is that many who spit at our troops in 'nam now occupy seats in neocon thinktanks. go figure.

  • It's nice to look back to the glorious 60s as a reminder of what those of my generation could make 2010-2020. The youth of today are not apathetic, they just need to be stirred into passion. And one of us between 15 and 30 could be the force that pushes the world into a decade of wonder, a modern Summer of Love.

  • @DelphinusMAch1 They are apathetic because the babyboomers fucked it all up!

  • @DelphinusMAch1 The youth of today are not apathetic, they just don't give a shit.

  • This song should be the Earth World Anthem

  • I'm turning 18 later this month. My generation needs some Volunteers.

  • My kids arent in a mess. I'm proud. Keep he faith.

  • One of the finest protest songs ever penned down. Up against the wall Motherfucker!

  • Good Lord . . . Done more? Comrade?! Dem's Passed national health care bill? Thats been the fellow traveler's holy grail forever. You have gun pressed to the capitalist head. Relax. You'll be skipping rope with Hugo Chavez and singing hail to the revolution before you know. Uncle Joe could kiss you now comrade . . . "and we are very proud of ourselves"

  • @edteachone I could piss out a stronger health care bill. Theres no public option, no government negotiation of drug prices, no extended medicare. Its a capitalist (Corportist) dream. Humana could kiss you now.

  • shame the production is god awful

  • Motherfucker tear down the walls! Beautiful song, JA rules!

  • Don't lose hope, let's get together, reawaken, renew the vibe, the spirit! Can we have nostalgia for the present? Maybe so, if we co-create the right-eous kind of reality!

    Maybe so....

    Kris

  • Go U.S.A !!!

    from France

  • My new favorite song. Thank God for all the hippies to show that the US really is capable of something worth doing.

  • @sunsplash1980 When you say "Hippies" that was a word created by the Man, to create a label for a group of people who believed in a free-spirited, free-thinking and free-loving society. People these days have lost sight of the light at the end of the tunnel, and continue through the fog of misconception. Its up to us who believe in what musicians and the people of the 60's and open the eyes of those who are lost in the mainstream, just as they did.

  • Who here just saw the documentary "the war at home" on Wisconsin Public tv?

  • my fav-o-rite

  • hello

  • Can we finally get together?

  • Sublime!!! Fantastic (not plastic)!!

  • Comment removed

  • um no offence to any body the last thing i wana do is offend any body but can some one explain how obama got the noble peace prize????

  • @Smoker920909

i don't think anyone would ever be offended by the question..it's a world view thing...the first to reach out to other countries, as if we were in the world together. no one had done it before him.

  • Great song!...I think our kids are just fine, by the way(gaze in wonder at this site, and the posted comments)"everything they say we are, we are"! great stuff, thanks much.

  • They played this in the SFU in the late 60's, maybe '67 actually, and BLEW everybody's mind for good.

  • Comment removed

  • Well, considering your views are from the Cold War, I wouldn't say your ideas are too modern, either.

  • I like when they sing "moth-er-fuck-er"...

  • The problem with what they believed came to me when I was among them and I saw that there was nothing in what they believed that was better than anything I heard in church about Jesus...

  • "...tear down the wall, motherfucker, tear down the wall...."

used to listen to this a lot....when i believed somethin. not sure what i believe in now. Good to hear this anyway. thanks. 5***** saved to faves

  • "and we are very proud of ourselves"

maybe we should have done more, so our kids wouldn't be in this mess.

    K e v

  • @kevirwin That's just hindsight...helping to stop the War and the start of the environmental movement wasn't bad...but it's the old story, there was a social revolution, but not a political/economic one....the system remained the same. The reason why "our kids are in this mess" is because of unbridled (thanks Milton Friedman) Capitalism, egged on by Reagan and Thatcher, not the 60's generation. You decent Americans had better stop the Tea Party/Palin or it really will hit the fan....

  • @kevirwin not all kids are lost. I'm now 18 years old and I prefer this way of music!!

  • @kevirwin I'm sixteen years old and a hippie, that's why I must make sure my kids know the truth... We just must spread the truth. of the repetition of time.. Spread it one by one..

  • @kevirwin And maybe our folks should have, too.

  • @kevirwin egotistical baby boomers. geez. the world revolves around the narcissists. you created the foundations for today's morons and liberal fascists, but they are preparing their own level for the next group of morons. Just be prepared to stop driving because you selfish geezers are already clogging the roads. thanks for the drugs, pornography, and self-esteem based performance principles. wohoo

  • A call to arms to mobilize the liberal to radical left and all its various factions against the tyranny of the time (Nixon).

I believe Abbie Hoffman inspired Kantner to write it.

  • abbie hoffman bad-mouthed Jack Kerouac on national television. Made a mockery of Jack. Fuck Hoffman. sorry had to say it. But this is a good song. Still seems relevant nowadays.

  • okay hehe i just remembered it wasnt Hoffman but that dude from the Fugs who badmouthed Kerouac. Sorry. And I think it was an english tv show. oh well....I stopped smokin dope a long time ago so maybe my memory will get better..sheesh.....

  • @NoRosesForMe I remember seeing clips from such a show - it was indeed Ed Sanders from The Fugs in a debate with Kerouac. I remember Sanders being respectful of Kerouac and even calling him a "great poet", but also attacking Kerouac's reactionary stance on the hippies.

  • @pyrophore

wasn't it inspired on the "up against the wall motherfucker!" gang?

  • @alfonsobredosis Sure sounds like it, but sounds like Jef. Air. don't want the wall there to throw mofos up against it.

  • @alfonsobredosis

I always thought that line was used by the SLA. But they came 5 or so years later I think.

  • @alfonsobredosis that was David Peel and the lower east side!!!! BRILLIANT

  • An Anthem !

  • love it
