@northernanorak I know they're outtakes, and as such didn't make their way into the original programmes they're outtakes from, but the BBC still seemingly broadcast these, complete with the phrase "you're a cunt, you're a cunt", as the Christmas Tape in 1979. Or am I wrong?
@northernanorak I wish BBC America would telecast these tapes but i bet they are nothing but memory given due to the erased random episodes of Dr Who and also erased the nearly the pre mid 1970s episodes of TOTP
@lesterroberts1 no - this was a not-for-broadcast "Christmas Tape", made by the VT dept for the entertainment of themselves and the rest of the TV industry. Everett did bits for it, as did the likes of Noel Edmonds and Michael Crawford.
These were made by the VT (Video tape) dept which is featured quite a lot . I had the original tapes given to me by a friend who was a technical manager in the BBC VT dept
I had to leave them back in NZ, but was fortunate enough to find the complete 78 and 79 files on winmx
Am I right in saying that these tapes were only circulated within the bbc and they were put together as a 'christmas treat' for staff only, I seem to remember the rumours about these years ago.
Very true. There was a bit of a controversy when the 1978 tape, which had a sketch about Princess Anne, got into the hands of the Sunday People, who proceeded to turn it into a bit of a scandal.
Also this ident appears that it was the real one in 1974 and but a different ident was used for BBC1 in that year if someone posts it on here and due to Kenny Everett putting his slight touches to 'Good King Memorex' and new-wave background music.
Heh, heh - funny as f**k! Hearing the likes of Sue Lawley, Terry Wogan and Magnus Magnusson swearing just made it even funnier - well, you don't expect to hear it, do you? Slightly ironic that this TV schedule is better than the dross they put on at Christmas now, eh?
ha ha great stuff im sure i watched the whole video of this years ago there were loads of out takes in it. it was called bbc vt but the video was like 2 or more hours long with a play school clip in where the presenter sings 1 button wont do the wind up do up to ive looked for that on here but cant see it unless any 1 else have found it that is. but these clips are fantastic.
It is a blooper reel, which the tags make abundently clear.
It was absolutely not ripped from another YouTube account, it was taken from a video file of the whole thing which I acquired. I look forward to your apology for libelling me :)
I have this tape - my favourite clips are with the Dalek, Multicoloured Swapshop (which is on my profile) & the clip which immediately follows the end of this - the biggest boobs are on the BBC.
no... the point which you have so comprehensively managed to miss is that this was the VT Dept's Christmas Tape which contained lots of outtakes, and was intended for internal consumption only
We had something similar to this in the US as well, but often would be pretty secretive and not too many outside the industry would've knew about them unless they weren't made public sooner or later (like bloopers for TV shows or newscasts and such).
Do you know, I agree with this; a lot of the swearing on this tape is *very* unconvincing! Indeed, Pamela Stephenson (on a later BBC Christmas tape) cracked a joke - in mock frustration - that some people were cursing on camera just to make it onto the next Christmas tape. I suspect this had a ring of truth about it. Still, a real shame those killjoys running Auntie decided to put a stop to it all circa 1982-3.
I'll have another look at it, but to be honest I'm struggling to remember any of it that was particularly funny as a short clip - the humour (apart from the outtakes) was more subtle in "White Powder Christmas". Good King Memorex was much much better
Indeed, a much better copy than mine (which cuts off after the Dalek segment, alas) -- especially as mine's on a VHS tape since about 1984 so must be really horrible by now. I liked the "Edit Suite Two" parody of "Run-Around Sue".
Perhaps yours could be better than mine on that note (my copy though I got off Bit Torrent as an MPEG-2 and even then it's a crappy capture as whomever did it apparently didn't have a good device to capture from, and it resulted in a lot of dropped frames in the vid.
The Michael Crawford bit is, ironically, an outtake from the previous year's Christmas Tape, in which he is in character as Frank Spencer alongside newsreader Kenneth Kendall.
Every year the BBC VT Dept used to produce a Christmas Tape which contained a combination of cockups and specially recorded spoofs etc and was intended for internal consumption and sharing with other broadcasters like ITV companies, but in recent years they've found their way onto the net.
There are several other items from this tape which others have posted, they're in Related and have the BBC VT logo in the corner easily visible on the thumbnails.
I love this bit of the tape! "At 9'0' clock comedy with the Beryl Reid show, Oh shit!" LOL love that bit!
