Dan this is off topic but do you know of a device or way, of changing the herts of a home made generator (with out rebuilding it) so that its 60Hz like a standard homes?? any one?
@kevbow0137 Assuming your generator is is an AC alternator, the best way is to use a bridge rectifier and go to DC (if DC generator no need) then store the power in a battery and go to an inverter. Unless you have a constant source of power like a gasoline diesel gen. you will have power drops that can cause high and low voltage damaging stuff.
Some years back, I was in New Orleans and we took a tour of an old plantation. When we went to the lower level of the house (not completely underground like a basement), they had a huge pot that was glazed on the INSIDE only. They said this was used as refrigeration. I haven't been able to find any info on this technique. What are your thoughts on this?
@DasBus2002 They might have wet the outer shell but New Orleans has higher humidity so evaporative water cooling does not work well most of the time. Maybe a winter thing? Up north my great grandparents had a 4ft deep cellar that they stored food in until about April. During the summer the veggies were stored there.
@GREENPOWERSCIENCE Yeah, maybe the glazing inside the pots somehow kept food cooler in the winter months?? It's just something I've always been curious about.
Takes incredible patience to deal with the bloopers I'm sure. Thanks for your patience and all you do. Please dont stop. I've learned so much on your channel.
@itchyundies Beer in wet sand poor petrol over it & light the the petrol. Think about it, that's the same process as what happening here, evaporative cooling. The fire speeds it up , so you will have cooler beer faster. The forced evaporation might mean it would work in humid climates. Dan need an excuse to drink some beer Dan should take some beer a gasoline to the beach to try it Though research project but someone has to do it ;)
i know a fellow that makes excelsior, wood wool, and ships ship loads to ahab the arab((folks in the very dry middle east) i'm trying to be funny and not a dick, asshole. so shut your yap.) for swamp coolers. same principle and fantastically effective.
I have also read where people say you can keep things cool for a long time by creating super insulation: you layer newspaper and aluminum foil repeatedly up to maybe 2 inches thick. I have never tried this, but they claimed the temperature control was far better than any common refrigerator.
Years ago, when I worked for a farmer, he provided me a "water bag", where some water would seep through to the outside, and evaporative cooling would keep it noticeably cooler. I found the water acceptably cool, and I could just hang it on a hook on the tractor.
In one of Tristan Jones' books about sea voyages, he mentioned his experiments with a cooler made with the help of hay. He said this was from an old method of keeping things cool.
I think the pilots of the gas bag heard that there was a fine looking lady that occasionally cooks outdoors while wearing only a bikini living at that address Here in Western KS evaporate coolers work well. A cellar will maintain ~52F
@JULYINJULY Yes humidity is key. By saying that evaporative coolers work well in Wstrn KS, I simply meant that they work well in Wstrn KS. I wasn't implying because they work well here , they should work well everywhere
this video has the only real results on youtube. why are people faking results?
Mohammed Bah Abba made 5000 for the Niger region with 23% humidity. They are getting 20-30 degree drops in that hyper dry climate. Yet people in the USA are claiming super results. BULL shirt/.
One other thing, others have tested their pot inside their house with the AC on, which lowers humidity dramatically. This may sound free but that moisture is removed from your AC and causes it to work harder roughly equal to the cooling. Furthermore in times of need, you will not have an AC running ex. after a hurricane. You will have near 90% humidity. I worry that many are considering this as a backup plan. There are MUCH better options. Cooling small spaces requires very little energy.
It's a cool concept. Of course I'll have to make one now cause I like it. Oh well just add it to all the other projects on my list. Thank you for sharing. (Tom)
ZEER is an arabic word,& its not like how we do it here, usually its just a deep thick earthy pot, coverd tightly with a thick sheep wool tissue, wool already has the ability to make things hot in the winter & cool in the summer; sheeps take profite from that, and yes before we use it we dip it in water,& we cover the zeer with, and it really makes it cool;& more: the water in the earthy pot becomes a living water, not like the ones in bottle/taps are dead with no energy, earth give energy to water
@METALis4ME96 Yep 50 degree drop, a new world record. Amazing considering there was condensation already on the bottles. That does not happen that fast or at all in very low relative humidity, something that is a must for results of even a 20 - 30 degree drop. I did this test to demonstrate the real results. Zeer pots are great for very dry climates with the goal of keeping food cool. Near frozen beer is science fiction.
Like celeb sex tapes? Who doesn't?! My three fav ones would have to be Rihanna, Carmen Electra, and Kim K. They have those three and dozens more (even the new Tupac video) posted at
Yeah good one.... depending upon the climate - being temperature AND humidity - they can either COOL and humidify the food - so it does last longer, either by a whole heap or just extending it's life by a day or two... for bacteria etc., 10 degrees Centigrade is better for keeping food than 20*C, and 20 is better than 30 or 40 or 45 or 50*C
One way of reducing humidity is use a desiccant. Concentrated salt water will function as a desiccant. and pull water out of the air. Seems to work better if the salt water is sprayed into the air, but could maybe try placing the zeer pot in a enclosure, alongside a bowl of very concentrated salt water. If the salt water needs to be regenerated just boil some of the water off using solar concentrator- cover and leave to cool before placing back in the enclosure.
@MrJerryanderson 33 degree drop in Florida in the summer? Not likely. I did this video because there are a lot of videos out there that over express the results, one states near freezing in 92 f ambient temps. Best case scenario is 30 f in 25% RH or less. They will not work in most places in North America in the summer because of humidity. I posted a chart of averages in the more info area below.
Could you scale up and build it big enough to build your house in? Year round ac! And could be used as a desalinater if you evaporated sea water and re-condensed the vapor.
Try soaking the outer pot overnight in water first, then build your Zeer cooler. Clay pots absorb a lot of water, and trying to do it dry may have affected the efficiency of the cooling.
Placing the pot in the sun increases evaporations BUT also increases the outside temperature. Because the water conducts temperatures, this defeats the purpose, like placing in an oven. The maximum temperature difference drop is est to be 37f in very low 15% Ambient Humidity. Wind increases the process.
A breeze or a fan blowing on it would be certain to lower the temperature more by increasing the evaporation. Using a fan might be an interesting experiment. Maybe a peltier device would produce a voltage due to the difference in temp enough to run a small fan. Obviously the guys on the blimp were scoping out Denise.
Hi i'm new viewers of your channel, found your channel on research into fiber optics ... i just have one suggestion, At 3:26 She says the temperature is 10 degrees colder, it would be awesome if you had a Laser Temp Reader and showed the viewers the difference :)
Cool refrigerator. Quick question. Doesn't concrete hold heat? So wouldn't it make more sense to use an outdoor thermometer to get the air temperature then compare that to the temperature inside the zeer pot?
Very informative Video I have always wanted to make on of these and try it out. But since this works on evaporation would it work better on a hot day do you think? Anyways thanks again. Steve
lower temperatures = HIGHER humidity. Hotter air can dissolve more water vapor. When it cools down, the relative humidity goes up. When it reaches 100% humidity you will see dew (or frost) form. This is the point where the air is so saturated with water that it condenses out on the grass or other solid surfaces.
I'm surprised you would even try to make this in Florida, though you may get some luck by blowing an electric fan on it all day.
Here is a tip for you. Stack them. The one on top of the other will provide insulation to the one below, keeping in its coolness. Don't use a towel that drapes over the sand. The sand should be exposed to the air, not to the towel. you will get a lot more evaporation and cooling effect that way. Prop the bottom one up on a little stand so that air can get under it. Make sure it is in the shade, but in a breezy place. Do this and I bet you get better than a 6 degree temp drop.
i'm sure the temperature will lower another few degrees if you put a ceramic cover over the SMALLER pot. a lot of heat enters (or coldness escapes) when you leave it pretty much exposed by a cloth. your pots were pretty small too.
That sucker flies over me all the time - I think it's based out of the civil airport on 50. The cure for the blimp is a parabolic with a really long focus ;-)
.
I've also heard of a pit refrigerator that might not be so affected by humidity. The concept is a deep insulated pit, exposed to the night sky, and covered with an insulating lid during the day. Apparently, there's enough infrared radiation to the night sky to cool it significantly - don't know how well it would work on cloudy nights.
Why don't you build some rocket water bottle to shot at the CM zepplin ? ;)
Anyway great video ! I will be trying most of your project since I am moving to the country side soon . I am in Japan so the humidity here is as high as yours . Hope I can do it !!
Very nice a month ago looking for cooler side of an engine I found the spaish water cooler pots then saw Hydrogen and wee wee works better the pots work but too much risk of mold and disease. Anyway Treehugger has a solution "Hydrogen fridge" into google brings it up.
That is super cool I would have never thought of something like that. Thats really using your head! Now incoroprate a very small solar powered fan and really watch it perform!
Nice idea, from an older time. However here in the Philippines, the Humidity i am afraid, is always way to high for that idea to work for me. Guess i am stuck with paying for electric on my refrigerator. At least until i can get a hold of a steam power generator, to power my electric needs off grid.
@a10fjet The warmer the climate, the warmer it's going to be deep underground The annual average Temp for a location is a good rule of thumb for what to expect under ground. For example the average annual Temp for Miami FL is 68-72 depending who's saying Not nearly low enough to store perishables
Dan I know these are for water I want to know how well they would do with alcohol? If you are in a place where you have alcohol would they work to fill the sand with alcohol. I would do this out by the shipping containers not near your home (fire risk) and measure the results of alcohol vs water in your climate. I was wondering if you could make a solar frige out from an old propaine frige? Rather than use the propane to heat what ever is heated use the sun?
I'm in So Cal... every time someone passes gas they send out the dirigible to video. That sucker must have REALLY been low flying to be THAT loud. Poor guys. That DOES suck audio input wise. I can't believe you even TRIED to make one of those fridge in Fla!. I'm in the super dry area of So Cal and have been looking at this for a few weeks. Guess it's time to make one. Rock on or we'll hurt 'cha bad bro. lol
@GREENPOWERSCIENCE I used to have one made from marble, it had an indent on the top to put water in. It would make whatever it was standing on damp but it did do a pretty good job.
I think you should go to Goodyear to charge for the commercial LOL!

Rock on or we'll hurt 'cha bad bro. lol

@ThePopypete Getting ready for the Monday Football tomorrow night. The airport designed for small aircraft and blimps is located 1 mile from us.

@GREENPOWERSCIENCE I used to have one made from marble, it had an indent on the top to put water in. It would make whatever it was standing on damp but it did do a pretty good job.

@locouk I have never even seen a blimp in my location in the northern tundra. Have seen them when traveling.
