HHDL has said himself that Tibetans should keep themselves safe by saying whatever is required of them (by the Chinese tyrants). But it's equivalent of denouncing their own true conscience, so naturally they will feel it will have bad consequences in the next life.

I don`t understand why people think they will be punished for saying bad things against Dalai lama.

My understanding of karma is that if you say bad things about people you will create bad karma for yourself.
