Ok, so I've listened to 4 fabulous Semeles available on YouTube for the same aria: Battle, Bartoli, Massis, and Joshua. To me, it's neck-and-neck between Bartoli and Joshua (in the same Carsen production almost 2 decades apart!). RJ manages beautifully to be colorful, unlike Massis, accurate, unlike Battle, and orderly, unlike Bartoli, and then some. I can't wait to get her new studio recording of Semele out this year (again, 2 decades after this Aix-en-Provence prouction). Gotta be hot stuff!
Joshua is an ideal Semele, and an almost perfect union of singer with the composer's rather daring conception. If I'm allowed a minor quibble -- the ornamentation in the da capo sounds a bit too conventional in a couple spots. Does anyone know if she's British or American?
isnt she wonderful!!!!!!!! WOW

There's a CD of her as Semele, done some years after this production. It's great!

I think its great to see everyone saying that they prefer one person over a another while still lauding the performances of others.

The best Semele IMO. The new CD is just great too!

Ah! Wonderful! She's not quite as cute as Bartoli but her voice is just divine.

It's all a matter of preferences. They are all wonderfully different interpretations!
