I distinctly remember going to school in the United States and learning that China was responsible for inventing gunpowder, firearms, the steam engine, block printing, paper, possibly the wheel, and making significant advances in modern particle physics.

The option for some people who want to curb the tide of Western/Eurocentric worldviews is to claim Europeans are nothing but a bunch of lucky copycats who "stole" ever bit of knowledge they could find, and that's just wrong and stupid. Why can't we simply respect and appreciate all great civilizations and their achievements? Yes, the East and Middle East influenced the West and vice versa, so what?

I think people want the West to acknowledge the achievements and contributions of non-European civilizations. That's why people are talking about this. In the modern age, non-Europeans simply do not have the same clout or influence as the West. However, I suspect that the future will change in favor of Asians...
