Alright, I hated this card game. It was HORRIBLE!!!! I hated sphere break in X-2. But I did kinda like Blitzball in X (though F blitzball in X-2!!!!!!!!!! DX)), and I LOVED Tetra Master in IX! XD That was a good mini-game!
I can't believe he actually ragged on Blitzball. I would take an entire game based on Blitzball alone. Just imagine if they released something like that on PSN. Of course, nothing beats racing chocobos!
@angrydead If you're not a fan of Blitzball, sure, it wouldn't be up your alley. Personally though (and I most certainly don't speak only for myself when I say this), I put many hours into just playing Blitzball in FFX, and that was before I even knew you had to play it to get Wakka's last weapon. It was enjoyably addictive, I'm sorry you couldn't get into it.

@angrydead "Long past it's prime" is entirely subjective. In fact, as far as I can tell so far, FF13-2 is going to be one of the best JRPGs on the PS3 (not that it has much competition), and FF13 has it's own fair share of a fan base (Lightning was one of the coolest main characters in the series to date). Are they my favorite games? Nope. FFX generally takes that title, despite having played every game in the series. That doesn't mean they aren't good games in their own right, though.

@angrydead You spelled "humour" with a "u", so something tells me you're foreign. UK, probably. If that's the case, then you're playing the "PAL" version of games, isn't it? I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure the U.S gets a different version, and more than likely the U.S version of FFX didn't have any bugs in it. So that takes us back to where we started. I'm sorry you weren't able to appreciate Blitzball for what it was, because your version has that bug, but plenty of people were.
@angrydead Also, you're right, Squall was definitely a much better main character than Lightning is. She doesn't deserve recognition whatsoever, she'd have to be the embodiment of "emo" to acquire that.
@ChocoboDreams No the bug is in the US verison. I've seen US players comment on it. Squall actually manages to be a worse protagonist than Lightning, most likely the most unsympathetic and unlikable protagonist in any game eve.
@FinalFantisiac I'm not sure what to say to that...NO!!! It was random! (Ish) At least VIII had solid rules and the only thing left up to chance was the cards the opponent used and the AI! You know, the only things that should be random! And at least the card system in VIII actually benefitted you!
I just had someone on my deviantART gallery say that Final Fantasy IX's card game pales in comparison to Triple Triad. Somebody likes Triple Triad...and actually thinks it's better than something else. And for some reason, I haven't killed this guy yet.
I loved the card game, I played FF8 when I was 14 or so and mastered it relatively easily, although it's true it does take a lot of effort to collect great cards.
I also think SpoonyOne is way off in saying the card rewards are useless. Without the items I got from converting cards I doubt I would have been able to beat Omega Weapon. Having the item that made your party invincible (I think the laguna card gave you it) was so worth the work.

@HilariousOperation That's the only way to truly max out your stats in FF8. You should play that game with a good strategy guide and learn the card game. It actually gets really fun when you get the hang of it and your characters will be some beasts. I hated the card game too when I was 12 but later on it became so useful.
@MightyMartel - Being useful, doesn't make the game any less annoying or boring in the long run. I have the same opinion about pazaak in Knights of the Old Republic.
@lobothesacred3 I agree, it doesn't make the game any less boring or annoying but my case it did because I was playing the game in a way I hadn't before. I loved learning the strategy behind this game and you can get really good stats early on. Right when you hit the world map you get the opportunity to increase your stats. Idk, it was more fun at that point for me. I hate the leveling up you have to do in FF7 but in 8 at least you have this card game you can learn.
@MightyMartel - I spent almost 40 hours playing the card game at the beginning to buff up my stats. It's annoying and repetitive and I'm still not done. I still need to find like 21 more Elnoyle cards so that I can make Quistis best weapon. And many of the cards are rather useless as well.
Hey! Sidequests are epic...usually! Sure, there are those that suck (Screw you, Blitzball! It's because of you that I will never 100% FFX), but there are also those that are epic, and actually have something to do with the main story (FFIV and FFVII both had more than one of those)
I wonder if Spoony will review Metal Gear Solid, and joke about things like "Be REALLY Stealthy or Die" and "I need to call a friend for help to figure out how to call Meryl and beat Psycho Mantis".
I liked playing Triple Triad and Paazaak. In fact, Triple Triad was pretty much the extent of my playing FF8. I found it less boring THAN FF8, of course I only played the beginning, so I didn't play by different rules... and I eventually got bored of cards too... and just stopped playing... AGAIN. I can't finish that game, dude. It's just TOO boring! Final Fantasy VII and X were good though! I actually ENJOYED those games (HATED Blitzball though)
Actually the all rule will degrade to direct. Diff is the rule that allows you to take more cards based on your final score. If you end the game with a score of 7 - 3 in your favor you get to take 4 of the losers cards. Basically the amount of cards you get to take in diff is your score minus your opponents score. Of course, this rule also works against you if you lose.

@TheShadowfan9000 - He still doesn't care if you can find easier ways of getting magic. His issue with this whole system is it requires you to do tedious busy work. I can understand where he is coming from though. If you want to get all of the best spells and stuff at the game it requires you to spends hours playing triple triad. The game gets dull rather fast. Especially if you get some good cards and don't have to try all that hard to win.
@lobothesacred3 well, when I played this game, I didn't find myself needing to draw very often, only for the GF's I wanted, otherwise I collected about 25 of almost each spell. I don't use magic often, and no one really should :/
@TheShadowfan9000 - Spoony also points this out. Magic in this game is rather useless since it is much more useful to stockpile it and junction it to your stats. But, this also makes magic come across as pointless. Since, your never going to really make use of it.
It also doesn't help that some of the cards can only be found by repeatedly carding a monster or set of monsters. You can get a rather rare card by carding the T-rexaur or grat at the start of the game.

@TheShadowfan9000 Spoony sure likes to accentuate the negative towards FF8. But he is pretty good at playing this game and gives strategies. He even has the Lion Heart gunblade which would've been obtained in disc 3. You need to spend 4 hours collecting 20 Elnoyle cards to refine 2 energy crystals and into 20 pulse ammo or collect a rare steal item in disc 2.

If no; how the hell is he suppose to figure that out besides playing around with it? I might have figured it out since I like to play around and goof off in games. I thought triple triad was pretty fun at the beginning, then the STUPID fucking rules started showing up and playing made me want to wrap my head in tin foil and jamming it in a microwave.
Yeah I hated Triple Triad, played it once, thought it was an intersting idea, but the prospect of doing the entire sidequest for all the cards seemed like a horrible prospect, so I never bothered with it. if you ask me seems kind of stupid trying to complete it anyway, unless you have some sort of psychological compulsion to self torture (which you do apparently).
I love final fantasy viii but this guy is actually hilarious. He is funny in his own right, and funny because he is playing the game all wrong; you either level up or go crazy with cards, as both achieve the same sort of thing (making you stronger). He does both which leads to crazy aggrevation. And I love how pissed off he gets at the "direct" rule when you NEVER have to use it unless you force it on yourself. Also YOU can effect which area has which rules. The Quistis part was so funny
@ASteveVaiFan I just have to disagree because when I first played the game I had no idea the importance cards held in the game, so I drew like mad, I totally ignored the cards, and it was horrible. The game is so bad at explaining anything in this system.
Now I'm playing again and playing loads of cards and it's horrible too because it takes forever to get the cards, and multiple ones of the one you want at that. Either way the game is a grind, and not a very good one at that.
After the first 2 review videos and the first 2 mins of this, I dont even want to buy an old FF game onto my ps3... I think ill go download some movies. haha
@HolySasquatchTurd However later on in the review he starts covering the whole final fantasy series, and the original Final Fantasy from the info I've gathered was released in the USA in October of 1990.
So if one looks at the future parts of the reviews and considers it a review of the whole thing (he does cover FF1, FF7, and this one mostly) then one can say he has a sense of time, just a bad sense of grammar lol

I liked playing Triple Triad and Paazaak. In fact, Triple Triad was pretty much the extent of my playing FF8. I found it less boring THAN FF8, of course I only played the beginning, so I didn't play by different rules... and I eventually got bored of cards too... and just stopped playing... AGAIN. I can't finish that game, dude. It's just TOO boring! Final Fantasy VII and X were good though! I actually ENJOYED those games (HATED Blitzball though)

Actually the all rule will degrade to direct. Diff is the rule that allows you to take more cards based on your final score. If you end the game with a score of 7 - 3 in your favor you get to take 4 of the losers cards. Basically the amount of cards you get to take in diff is your score minus your opponents score. Of course, this rule also works against you if you lose.

@TheShadowfan9000 - He still doesn't care if you can find easier ways of getting magic. His issue with this whole system is it requires you to do tedious busy work. I can understand where he is coming from though. If you want to get all of the best spells and stuff at the game it requires you to spends hours playing triple triad. The game gets dull rather fast. Especially if you get some good cards and don't have to try all that hard to win.

@lobothesacred3 well, when I played this game, I didn't find myself needing to draw very often, only for the GF's I wanted, otherwise I collected about 25 of almost each spell. I don't use magic often, and no one really should :/

@TheShadowfan9000 - Spoony also points this out. Magic in this game is rather useless since it is much more useful to stockpile it and junction it to your stats. But, this also makes magic come across as pointless. Since, your never going to really make use of it.
It also doesn't help that some of the cards can only be found by repeatedly carding a monster or set of monsters. You can get a rather rare card by carding the T-rexaur or grat at the start of the game.

@TheShadowfan9000 Spoony sure likes to accentuate the negative towards FF8. But he is pretty good at playing this game and gives strategies. He even has the Lion Heart gunblade which would've been obtained in disc 3. You need to spend 4 hours collecting 20 Elnoyle cards to refine 2 energy crystals and into 20 pulse ammo or collect a rare steal item in disc 2.

If no; how the hell is he suppose to figure that out besides playing around with it? I might have figured it out since I like to play around and goof off in games. But to me Spoony seems like a more...IDK if it's serious or laidback...but he doesn't seem the type who likes to investigate something if the game doesn't direct him to do it or he's stuck.

Yeah I hated Triple Triad, played it once, thought it was an intersting idea, but the prospect of doing the entire sidequest for all the cards seemed like a horrible prospect, so I never bothered with it. if you ask me seems kind of stupid trying to complete it anyway, unless you have some sort of psychological compulsion to self torture (which you do apparently).

I love final fantasy viii but this guy is actually hilarious. He is funny in his own right, and funny because he is playing the game all wrong; you either level up or go crazy with cards, as both achieve the same sort of thing (making you stronger). He does both which leads to crazy aggrevation. And I love how pissed off he gets at the "direct" rule when you NEVER have to use it unless you force it on yourself. Also YOU can effect which area has which rules. The Quistis part was so funny

@ASteveVaiFan I just have to disagree because when I first played the game I had no idea the importance cards held in the game, so I drew like mad, I totally ignored the cards, and it was horrible. The game is so bad at explaining anything in this system.
Now I'm playing again and playing loads of cards and it's horrible too because it takes forever to get the cards, and multiple ones of the one you want at that. Either way the game is a grind, and not a very good one at that.

@HolySasquatchTurd However later on in the review he starts covering the whole final fantasy series, and the original Final Fantasy from the info I've gathered was released in the USA in October of 1990.
So if one looks at the future parts of the reviews and considers it a review of the whole thing (he does cover FF1, FF7, and this one mostly) then one can say he has a sense of time, just a bad sense of grammar lol
