  • Note how Sinatra says "You son of a bitch" at 1:20.

  • I remember an old film, where you could see the frustration in Dean. Dean ladies man, but Jerry got all the lines. Both where kings, Dean was crowned The King of Cool by Elvis himself, and Jerry received Nighthood by the French Gov. Chevalier of the performing arts. King of Comedy, check out the movie. The debate about Dean and Jerry is equivalent to John Lennon and Paul McCartney. Dean did not drink until the end or his life and career. They both struggled with addiction ....in the end.

  • "Ya workin?" I find it poetic that according to Jerry Lewis' memoir "(Dean and Me: A Love Story) that's the same line he used when they first met. So Sweet!!!

  • The best lines: "Ya' workin'?" / "I'm over here!" / "Well, here we go again!" / "Thanks for comin' over." And it was ALL ad-lib! Pros!

  • Esto es MAGIA !!!.

  • That happened in 1986 not '76. I remember watching it live. It was the middle of the afternoon on the second day of the telethon so don't know how many people were actually watching. Great moment in telethon history. Only Sinatra could have brokered that.

  • @desiboy987 not to sound like a smart person her but this was in 1976, not 86. However agreed this was one of the best moments in the telethon's history.

  • @desiboy987 You can tell by the way they appeared it was 1986. I remember them reuniting then. I was a kid in 1976 and I'm sure I would not have remembered that if it happened then.

  • Jerry ALWAYS takes down-stage from his big star guests. He doesn't try to up-stage them. That's class.

  • Ditto DAT!!!

  • this makes me tear up ever time i see it

  • Love it

  • I cant understand it Jerry Lewis gone! to bad for those BIG shots at the MDA!

  • All dudes.

  • Three great men you wount see this kind of talent again

  • @Tomsouthrock Yes, I know...sad but true.

  • @toastichedu Rite 0lboy we have eaten to much cake. 0'well I got to see the tail end of it all

now like all, Im wondering were this crazy once great country is going )::)

  • There are too many fab moments in this vid to mention. The phone #s really take me back to growing up in L.A., life was do simple, you could smoke, onstage !!!!!!

  • Dean 'Never Sober' Martin.

  • It's gets me right in the gut.

  • Thank you guys. You made me laugh and cry at the same time.

  • Only Frank could have pulled that off.

  • @javelin1010 .....You are so right . "Frank "was the man who could do anything.

  • i´m sure that George clooney learned his behavior form Dean Martin.. thumbs up if you agree with me ???

  • Priceless & quite moving 0:50

  • Only The Mighty Frank could have pulled that off...

  • @audesemusic Maybe you're right!

  • Interesting to see Jerry's body language at first - where his arms are crossed and then later relaxes them. I think he's not sure what will transpire, but he's obviously immensely relieved as the bit goes on.

  • "So how ya been?" Yeah, that's Jerry.

  • 2:14 When Jerry asked Dean, "Are you working?", I think Dean should've said, "Am I working? What do you think I call this?"

  • Gee do ya think Dean was smashed?

  • Dean Martin the old Wino

  • Sure would be great if we had Mr.Sinatra in Israel right now. "I think it's about time don't you? I think it's about time."

  • Dean was cool before the deffinition of cool was known.

  • why is sinatra reading the teleprompter as if he can't remember the names of his own grandchildren?

  • they should have made a reunion movie in 1976!!! it would have beat the hell out of any shit Jerry made in those days

  • If anyone was blitzed, it was Jerry. He has admitted, in print, many times, that this early-to-late 70's period was a haze of Percodan addiction for him. One of the few things he even remembers during this time was this surprise reunion. Happily, Jerry was able to conquer his addiction and has been drug-free for many years. As for Dean, we still miss him.

  • @notredamehesamighty Amen, friend. Well said.

  • Dean is drunk as!!!!!!

  • Saw it live and it is still exciting-Frank knew they still cared about each other

  • the truth is that Jerry loved Dean dearly. every interview i have seen concerning Dean , Jerry was always reverential toward him.

  • Frank: "Well we had to get ya off some way, yaou'd better get outta here.."

Dean: "I got off last night...." LMFAO

  • Dean does not appear real lucid.

He must have been nervous about all this.

  • i remember that but jerry had his back turned when frank called in dean to surprize him. why didnt they show that part?? also, even though they made up, they never performed together again. they were offered millions to do one night at the sahara in vegas but dean said no thanks. they also spoke on the phone many times over the next 19yrs but only saw each other about ten times during that same period. sadly they were still never as close as they were before dean was very aloof. about it.

  • THAT was the day hell froze over.

  • After Dean's son was killed, Jerry did "attend" the funeral but opted to keep his distance else the occasion become a bigger media circus than it already was.

  • It's too bad no one could have arranged a similar reunion between Frank and Peter Lawford. I really felt sorry for that guy.

  • one more comment, the question was asked about their contact after this meeting.

yes, on two occasions that i know of. (not in person).

jerry called when deans son died, another time jerry reached out and sent a personnel gift.

no response from dean, you can decide who was the good guy.

  • how nice to see all those opinions, all are true but the FACT WAS THIS !

during the movies, when dean sang, many in the theater went to the bathroom or

    bought popcorn and candy !

sorry dean only fans but jerry was the show !

i can tell you more but i will run out of comment space.

    relax and enjoy both !

  • Did they ever resume their friendship after the show or was it just for the cameras?

  • Sorry but googling a celebrity's name and reading some write up on them doesn't make a person an expert on them. I don't believe anything about celebrities unless I hear and see them say it themselves - and even then I take it with a big grain of salt. Whatever the story, I loved both these guys as kids and still do

  • enjoy dino...forever king of col

  • 5 million couldn't keep them together in the mid-50's and that was a lot of money back then.

  • dean and jerry were so huge from 46 to 56 all other comedy teams pale in comparison. they did stage, radio, tv, film, and records. their stage shows were so hot, they could demand any price and get it. there is a fascinating interview from the early 70's from dick cavett show floating on youtube. Jerry mastered the art of video playback that is still used today. he also taught at USC film school.

  • watching the 2010 show right now. It's been sixty years already!

  • @rjseoplus 60 years NEXT year

  • So..After all the loving and the giving Dean made his way off.

Tony Orlando was in the wings waiting to go on..As Dino sauntered by T.O. Tony said.."Man, That was so beautiful Mr. Martin!" ..to which Dean replied a resounding.............F**K 'em!...

True story..I was in Tony's band when I was 18...'Aint showbiz grand?

  • dean who?

  • Why do people feel the need to take sides between Dean and Jerry? Can't we just agree that they both did pretty good in their separate careers but they were pure magic together?:P They were a bit too different in style to compare them, imo. This reunion was one of the sweetest moments on tv though.

  • An epochal moment in the history of entertainment...

  • @StooGP No one has every film be a hit, so you can pull out films that didn't perform well throughout each of their careers, but Lewis was a successful filmmaker being paid by a major studio to write/direct/star in films through 1970 and it wasn't until the incomplete The Day the Clown Cried that he focused on his sold out Vegas act. 8 years later he resurfaced with Hardly Working (a hit) following up with such acclaimed films as Scorsese's The King of Comedy, Arizona Dream and Funny Bones.

  • wow jer received like 0 eye contact from dean.

  • Classic TV moment. Sad, awkward, poignant... Would loved to have seen inside their minds at that moment... I've a feeling there was still seething resentment on Jerry's part -- he got a few barbs in there.

  • This was historical. Dean was always the better man, a true gentleman. Class. Love them - and Jerry finally humbled himself after Dean Paul died.

  • @FriendofRamblinJack the better man? in what ways?

  • Jerry lewis suffered from an addiction to Percodan, a painkiller. Neither of them were drunk. He actually said that he did not remember any of it because he was in such a haze, even after watching the video.

  • One of Dean's children i think it was,( though I dont remember which one) said that during the telethon said that a lot of people thought he was plastered during this but that it's not true. Dean was on some powerful medicine for a bad back or something and that's what was causing him to be so loopy during this.

  • awwww!!!!!

  • awww i really love how they are able to share love...even if they are men.

these days guys cant show friendly, man to man affection for eachother without being called gay. how sad.

  • MAN!! DEAN WAS HAMMERED!!!

  • @makeumybitch Dean Martin? Hammered? Noooo !!!

  • @thegreenlantern they had a falling out becaue dean thought he could do better without the comedy act and just sing.

  • this was beautiful

  • Watching the this comedy team of dean and jerry was like no other I have ever seen. There wasd a unique connection between them. A true friendship and love. I really loved these guys.

  • It brought a tear to my eye to see them hug.

  • Is dean's voice slurred?

  • no mattter what i loved both together xxxxxxx

  • Very awkward really for the two men but the fans who adored them loved it. Jerry must be very difficult to deal with and to a lesser extent Dean. I think Jerry still held a grudge here but was too much a professional to show it.

  • Elvis made 30 movies and at some point the formula was getting stale. Dean saw the same thing happening so split the act up. Jerry Lewis did some really good film work away from Dean but never matched his old partner's TV success. Though the Beatles had a terrible break up in the end.. John and Paul were civil and visited together frequently, too bad Dean and Jerry could not have pulled that kind of post-biz relationship off before 20 years had passed.

  • they never where friends,,,strickly business

  • @rock9711 Dean and Jerry were bestfriends but they became like enemies in 55/56 read Dean and Me:a love story...make sure you know what your talkin about before you talk

  • Wow, this is awesome Alisha..I am sure I watched this..and like most which is sad, until it hits home to a loved one most people just do not get how vital this is to the children and adults that this helps to find a cure. We sure need one for Kirstynn, she is down today...Praise God for everyone that helps and donates. Love the Rat Pack...I grew up with all their movies..

  • Make NO mistake, Francis Albert Sinatra as great as he was, was NOT infallible. But here Franky did right BIG TIME and it makes him seem VERY human and FUNNY!

  • Grande dulpla a maior de todos os tempos desde Oliver Hardy and Stan Lawel

  • I think this is real because both were crying.

  • Thank you for posting this historical moment !

  • This is one of those times where Dean was playing drunk... it was good for a bit. it's on his wiki page

  • Despite the rumours, actually it wasn't the first time. Occasionally they would run into each other doing nightclub acts, but they didn't talk to the length that they actually do here.

  • I read somewhere that Jerry (privately) after the show was pissed off that Dean made that surprise appearance on his telethon without him knowing.

  • @lesby77 I got that impression just by watching Jerry's reaction then giving his back to Dean as he walks off stage....though he did smile.

BEST LINE: "I just got off last night!" Man, was Dean loaded.

  • oscar & roberto

  • oh wow, this was so fantastic...brought tears to my eyes!

  • Anyone know why Dean and Jerry had a falling out in the first place?

  • @TheGreenLanternLives Because Dean said to Jerry "your nothing to me but a dollar sign" They broke up after that and their handlers struggled to cancel future engagements. This MDA thing was their 1st reunion since the break up.

  • @TheGreenLanternLives I believe the strain of their popularity was too much on dean to where all the attention was mostly on jerry. Unfortunately they split their own ways. But remained friends none the less.

  • @TheGreenLanternLives I think they had had enough of each other. And in retrospect, it was probably the smartest thing for both of them.

  • @TheGreenLanternLives There were a number of factors resulting in Dean & Jerry's split. Dean was often not acknowledged by the critics for his part in their comedy team act according to Jerry. Dean said that as time went on Jerry took himself too seriously. In an interview Jerry said that both he & Dean had camps of people surrounding each one of them & that some of these people poisoned Dean against Jerry,as well as Jerry against Dean. Both men also wanted to do different things after 10 years.

  • @theironclads you must have read the Autobiography

  • Dean actually drank apple juice on stage. At home he was a Jack daniels fan.

After his son died, he hit the bottle hard. Jerry and him remained friends all the way to deans passing

Entertainment will never be the same without all the gents in the clip above

  • so how you bin??? OMG

  • I agree...that's got to be the funniest line!

  • It seems they had nothing to say to each other.

  • Well done Blue Eyes. Well done.

  • dean never drank or went to parties he was always home with the family, watching westerns or playing golf

  • That was one of the best moments of show biz, when they made up. I remember my Mom & Dad both really excited by this. It moved my entire family! We were all huge fans! God bless you Dino, Jerry & Ole Blue Eyes!

  • It pisses me off when people say " Dino was drunk" That's bullshit. According to the people who knew him best, Dino seldom actually drank. When performing, he almost always had apple juice or soda in his glass to make it look like booze. It was all an act. Even Frank Sinatra said that when they played together as the Rat Pack & would go out to bars after the shows, Dean almost never went with them, prefering to spend the time with his family. Anyone who says Dean Martin was a drunk is a liar.

  • Wh ocares if he drank or not!

it can't deny that he was the best!

  • Oh, i agree he was the unmatchable best, but i hate it when people spead rumors about people that arent true, especially about my beloved Dino.

  • @RatPackFan88 its true,my Mother told me years ago his drinking was just an act

  • Its true, i agreed. He's always so relax when he sings, this only shows that he's natural and very comfortable with his performance. I don't think he's drunk, he's amazing!!!

  • @RatPackFan88 Exactly. That was an act, a character....and he did it marvelously

  • @RatPackFan88 Your right on RPF88 . To quote Sinatra" Hell i spill more booze than Dean drinks". As to the fall out Lewis admits that it was his doing and that he finally pushed Dean to far.

  • @RatPackFan88 Why does it piss you off? It just goes to show how much of a professional that Dean was to consistently pull off the act time after time.

  • @shoredude2 It just does. I hate it when people present rumors as fact, or when they are in denial about something that is obvious or common knowledge (i.e.: OJ did it, Michael didnt, Walt Disney was not cryogenically frozen, things of this nature) or omit certain facts to fit their convoluted theories. I never knew Dean either but i trust the word of people knew him best: his closest friends and family.

  • @RatPackFan88

he may not have been a drunkard, but he was sozzled in that video.

  • @RatPackFan88 UR RIGHT..it was all an act...Tea was mostly what he drank...AND this reunion was planned...They always talked.

  • @RatPackFan88 That the story I know as well. That's how good an actor he was.

  • @RatPackFan88 Bull shit!! Dino drank all day, every day! Its a well documented fact he was a pisshead!

  • @RatPackFan88 You're right. Family members have said it was almost always apple juice in Dean's glass.

  • @RatPackFan88 TRUE!!! The BOOZE shown on the shows was in reality, Martinelli's APPLE juice!..when asked at an Air Port by some dumb woman if he really drank THAT much....Martin replied..."DO YOU THINK NBC SPENDS 45 MILLION DOLLARS A YEAR ON A DRUNK???

  • @APatronOfTheArts I dunno, look at the likes of Charlie Sheen. Here's a guy whom has had ALL these drinking and drug problems, yet showed UP when doing his shows, and he KEPT ON GETTING HIGH and always in TROUBLE.

    You tell me....

  • Comment removed

  • @RatPackFan88 I once worked as a server at a party that Mr. Martin was at... I served him his drink all night - apple juice!! He told me "keep my glass half full at all times and do not tell anyone what it is" - the next day people talked about how Mr. Martin was drunk as usual... shows how much people knew. That is what Mr. Martin wanted though, his entire rep was built around that persona... he was a great man.

  • Priceless.

  • this makes me happy.Dean and Jerry made up. and I thank God for both of them. and FRank made it happen. that a true friend.

  • Good thing Dean stepped in when he did because it was falling apart quick.

  • That was Dean who said YOu son of a bitch. Dean is obviously not sober.

  • No, I was definitely Jerry, cause it's followed by "Should have been the Jew who did it, " meaning (I think) that Jerry should have been the one who initiated the reunion...there also have been conflicting reports that Dean was drunk...he may have been playing it up as well, but he could have been sauced, it was like 12 Midnight or so when this originally aired if I remember...

  • @StooGP

Actually, I think he was referring to Joey Bishop

  • @StooGP dean was excellent at acting drunk. i'm going with no, he wasn't drunk. he was either acting or just slap-happy b/c of the time.

  • @StooGP yes he was sauced

  • It's nice to know that they patched things up their personal problems before Dean died.A very nice momemt....

  • @cybasame the death of dean's son put him in a tailspin

  • For money for MDA, they really need to release a box set. There was so much talent that have come on here, and even four or five years ago they replayed when Gary was a kid on stage with Jerry. I would purchase it in a heartbeat and I'm far from rich.

  • Did anyone else hear Jerry say "You son of a bitch." LOL, that was priceless!

  • When Dean was alive, he always called Jerry 'preacher'.

  • we dont got that today they were stars

  • 1 of the all time classic moments in TV history. Only Sinatra could get away w/ pulling these 2 together after 20 years. The audience reaction epitomized what the viewing audience around the country felt: Cheers, tears, and just simple joy after seeing these 2 greats rejoined on stage at Lewis' Marathon. I wish Sinatra would have let them go on a bit more, but love him as I do, Sinatra was a bit of a show stealer and wanted the spotlight. So I took was we were given. Fabulous TV moment.

  • that brought an unexpected tear to my eye

  • Oh my god that is so sweet.

  • LOVE Jerry's murmur at 1:21.

  • AWE.. I love them both!

  • They were such good friends! I'm thankful that they made up before Dean had to go.

RIP Dean Martin, we love and miss you very much!

    I LOVE YOU DEAN & JERRY! :).

  • I remember watching this live. What an incredible moment in show business history. Read the book "Dean and Me .. A Love Story" for a detailed look at this moment. Great book !!!

  • I was in a Detroit laundrymat when this happened and the whole place just stopped. Nobody expected this and wondered what would happen next.

  • Spatacis217- whomever told you Dean didn't drink was dead wrong.

Most times he didn't drink onstage and pretended to be drunk. But the stories of the Rat Pack drinking their way thru Vegas are legendary.

  • RIP Dean,we love you always.

  • I saw this live. I was so shocked it took a few mintues to sink in. Thanks, who ever posted it.

  • Thank you so much for posting that. It's so great to be able to see such great moments with these legends. I was three years old when this happened. I'm now 36 and had always heard about this moment but have never seen it until now. Thanks again.

  • Legends!

  • I think Dean was drunk, or at least had been drinking. Listen to him carefully. He is a little bit slurry. They both must have been nervous.

  • Only Sinatra had the power to make that happen. If he said you were making up, then you made up.

  • You can feel that Jerry and Dean are quite nervous. They don't really know what to do but they handle it very well.

  • Every telethon has its moments, this remains a peak. One wonders how many drinks Frank and Dean had before they went on!

  • I thought Dean Martin didn't drink.

  • Dean Martin has since become a pop culture icon for his music, his trademark charm and his drinking, although his glass while on stage contained apple juice. He borrowed the lovable-drunk shtick from Joe E. Lewis.

  • Love this reunion of Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. I'm glad they reconciled as they were such a wonderful team. Thank you for posting. 5 stars!!.

  • I think he meant Sammy Davis Jr.. He was tight with both of them.

  • That ' There we go again' says a little about the attention jealousy I think Jerry had. hey they were two great names that grew and went to be even greater. So Awesome thugh

  • Okay, did anyone else see that at 3:31 Dean blew Jerry a kiss! I've watched this about a million times and this was the first time I caught it! I Love Those Two!!!!

  • Yes, Dino does indeed...and then comes his hilarious line, "Thanks for coming over..."

  • 'So, you working?' Love that line from Jerry.

  • Funny @ 1:20 when Jerry says: "You sonofabitch"

to Frank and then Frank says: "Should of been the Jew that did it ''. He's gotta be talking about Rickles!

  • I think he's talking about himself. Meaning, it should have been ME (Jerry) that did it...that comment is one of the highlights of this segment, no question....

  • Thanx for posting !

Like EmpressDR states, if someone has other clips of Jerry still being shocked that would be a delight to see - doubtful this was rigged, I believe the book Dean and Me and you can't fake tears and emotion like that!

  • Why did they go so long without seeing each other or speaking? They were always so great together!

  • If you read "Dean and Me" you'll get some insight.... and aw heck that male ego and testosterone just got in the way ;^D

They needed space - thank God they reunited!

  • This is a piece of American History no doubt. It would have been even better if Frank hadn't insisted on playing host and mugging with his pacing back and forth and continual interruptions. Yes, I understand he may have done that to keep things moving along. However, even Jerry comments to him to leave them alone.

  • Comment removed

  • I meant a reunion of Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis.*g*

  • Frank: (to Jerry after he kissed him) You do that one more time and we're gonna buy the furniture.

Great line from Ol' blue eyes

  • One Of THE GREATEST moments in television history....PURE GREATNESS!!!

  • THEY HOOKED THIS UP ON CARSON

  • It was 100% an act.
