The SMB1 engine is unstable. Some glitches happen because you overflow the buffer with coins, others because of wild scrolling and enemy spawning. The game can even crash because of stack overflow.

I'd also have faster music, and more changes than you'd think (try speeding up a real speedrun by 4x, and you'll see)

The top part with the timer freezes for the same reason the screen glitches up (too much scrolling), the timer still counts down fine ... (and was made fast on its own, not from the overall speedup)
