  • I love this song, it for some reason gives that warm feeling like the joy when I was a kid.

  • A very honest song.

  • I am planning on doing a cover of this soon, Please check out my channel and tell me what you think of the music so far :)

  • I love this guy so much. When I was very young this music would put me in a trance. Bless you all with love he does

  • This song reminds me of my dad, when we were young and he used to sing to us and play his guitar to get us to fall asleep. He seemed more connected to his soul-spirit then. I think music was the only way he could do it. This isn't a sap story - he's still alive. I hope he still find moments to express his soft and gentle soul.

  • Wow, he looks and sounds almost exactly like his son, Ben, in this video.

  • <3 <3 <3 Awesome <3 <3 <3

  • from uk pleas check out my songs very Original pleas support subscribe

  • The lyrics of this song are ure despair and emotion, all expressed by a perfect, angelic voice. Such pain coming from such a pure soul.

What a beautiful, honest man Mr. Taylor is. He always laid everything righ out in the open.

  • effortless

  • 59 people are either deaf or their speakers don't work.

  • @EcLiPzOrZ Maybe their mice slipped while they were trying to hit the LIKE button?

  • @EcLiPzOrZ

very cool post and point on. some folks find fault with Rembrandt, or Beethoven. Actually 60 negative comments only shows stupidity.

  • dislikes ? what ????

  • Golden pipes-one of the greatest songwriters/lyricists ever.

  • Great song.

  • sort of a sad and interesting fact about the title of the song, JT said that "Fire and Rain" was the from his time spent in a mental institution. Fire was the shock therapy and the rain was the freezing cold showers. Truly a very very sad song.

  • takes me back to my youth, hair and everything. Just brilliant.

  • What a beautiful song, I've done a cover of this in his honor. Click on my name and listen if you please :D

  • This song is etched so deeply in the fabric of my being that when i hear it, I somehow become completly transported back 40 years to my late teenage years again. I love it

  • Just brings back a flood of memories. You will not remember what people said.. you will not remember what people did.... but you will remember how they made you feel...and I feel utopia when I hear this thanx James

  • look down a pond me Jesus.

  • i was a bellhop at a holiday in back in north dakota in 1974 and jt and carly were staying there at a room with the nanny and their first child..i got an order to drop off a baby crib to a room and he answered it and what was so great i recognized him on the spot and he was so nice and carly came out and shook my hand etc.and then they were just maybe 30 years old!!...he helped me setup the crib and tipped me $2..he didnt give me an autograph or invite me to their concert which was the next nite

  • ok . i'm buzzed, get over it!!!!!

  • Taylor said the song was actually about several incidents during his early recording career. The second line of the song, "Suzanne the plans they made put an end to you," refers to Suzanne Schnerr, a childhood friend of his who committed suicide while he was away recording his first album. In that same account, Taylor said he had been in a deep depression after the failure of his new band.

  • Is it just me or is this the single greatest religious song ever made? The beauty of it is its simplicity...about life, and life is anything but simple. How many of us have cried while listening to this song and felt better as a result of having listened? So beautiful, perfection....

  • This song will be played at my funeral, and no tears are expected to be shed!

  • ty so much for sharing....

  • best performance of this song ive ever heard...ever

  • interesting that James Taylor had so many personal struggles in life... I think his music has probably saved lives, including his own.

  • @17MJG93 Id say his money saved him from dying. Psychiatric treatment isn't cheap.

  • I kinda c a bit of ashton kutcher in him

  • His voice is golden!

  • such a handsome fella

  • best song ever

  • how could anyone not like this?????

  • @tigerblue4ever totally agree with u

  • how could you possibly dislike this?

  • James has the perfect pitch it only comes along once in a generation.

  • this was a hit when Jim was born in nov. 1970......reminds me of you

  • Such a sad and touching song. Why don't they make music like this anymore? Music with actual emotion.

  • classic

  • It is quiet b/c the audience had manners. JT was singing about a friend whose soul went away too soon by suicide. Wish i could have seen you again, Trav !

  • IT'S TOO QUIET! I CAN'T HEAR IT!

  • I love this song! So simple, yet so good. I made my own version, take a second to check it out:) thanks

  • i accedentily clicked this and thought This song is beautifaul after

  • John Mayer > James Taylor

  • @fitzy1093 Those two are both very influential and great artists. comparing them does both of their creative work a disservice, I think. They both have heavenly voices and wonderful guitar arrangements.

  • @fitzy1093 james taylor isn't a faggot though.

  • @Nationalist101 Better luck next time then, eh?

  • @fitzy1093 LMFAO you must be fucking joking?

  • The song is so fresh and pure here.

  • simply beautiful

  • Are you saying that Justin Bieber couldn't sing this song ( Fire and Rain )?

  • cant we all just love the music

  • I want to hear Justin Bieber sing this song ( Fire and Rain ).

  • @GirlFromIpanema1966

    Blasphamy

  • Really love Steve Katz in the video responses! beautiful original!

  • The real story to to Suzanne is that she was his gal, and he sent for her, and her plane crashed, hence the lines "time on the telephone to talk about things to come, sweet dreams and flying machines in pieces on the ground..." Not the mental institution... Dont mean to nit pick...

  • @fidermanphil Sorry...Suzanne was a friend when he was in a mental institution. This song is his feelings upon being told of her suicide. The reference to "Sweet Dreams and Frying Machines" is about his first record, that crashed and burned before it really had a chance to fly.

  • @shan1455 I cant stand when I have bad info, thank you for giving me good info!

  • @shan1455 although my version was somewhat romantic, even though the other is as well...

  • @fidermanphil i've read a few article on this and there was no crash. The 'Flying Machines' line refers to his first band, the Flying Machines, which were disbanded. The Suzanne, Suzanne Scherr, did commit suicide while he was in England and he wasn't told until six months later.

  • Beautiful.

  • Suzanne was Mr. Taylor's friend in a mental institution. "Just yesterday morning they let me know you were gone" refers to his belated notification of Suzanne's death by suicide.

  • does anyone think he looks like Mitch Hedberg?

  • Beautiful voice.

  • thanks for uploading this wonderful song...

  • My father learned to play this song on an old acoustic years ago. I remember the first time I heard it, those hauntingly beautiful lyrics droning rhythmically with that nostalgic tune. Hearing it now reminds me of how happy my father used to be, back when he was young and his dreams were alive. Sweet dreams and flying machines....

  • i like all kinds of music and james taylor 's is some of the best. great song writter and singer.

  • Pure class...

  • People ask why someone my age would listen to music this old...........I answer it with a question.........Why wouldn't I?

  • Effin ridiculously epic. This makes me think of JF too...

  • I see a rather odd similarity to Kurt Cobain.... Imagine if.......

  • @waypastprime Cut it out, turd: you see the similarity between grungy sweaters being worn - nothing else.

  • @TheDucciano Small small man. Go back and lurk in the schoolyard.

  • @waypastprime Um, no. I'm calling you out on something retarded you said. The only comparison between the two is that they are both white males playing a guitar and in this clip, Taylor is sporting a mangy sweater similar to those worn by Cobain. So, no there is no odd similarity and you should sit your ass down somewhere, keep your odd similarities to yourself and eat a fat dick.

  • @waypastprime

    ... Imagine if what??

  • @d01t2m3......If Mr Cobain lived to be as prolific as JT. JT and Kurt were able to collaborate. If JT had had the same inescapable depression as Kurt. Imagine what could have, might have been lost or gained. It was an open question.

  • @waypastprime wow uhm daaamn uhm whaaat Cobain with a Similarity To Someone Like the Legendary James Taylor riiiiiite otay uhm how much crack you smokin ??? Imagine if .....! Dude your out to lunch cobain was a meth head gambling loser with no class James Taylor is the Epitomy of Class and esp seeing how its two totally separate genres of music altogether like wtf

  • @SycoDeathReaper well james taylor was depressed and addicting to heroin for quite a while, so there's more similarity there then it may seem at first.

  • @waypastprime Looks way more like Brandon Boyd, 100%. I don't see Kurt Cobain at all.

  • @ryguy2 Not in looks, but in the delivery.... the empathy. Soul out there for all to see, love, hate or trounce on. I would hate being a performer. I am Better at what I do.

  • @waypastprime Never saw that before, but you are right if you compare the Nirvana Unplugged to this... A huge difference though... Both had some very hard times... BUT, James Taylor didn't shoot himself in the head when things got too tough. Just goes to show that no matter what, things will get better. Killing yourself is not the answer. Where do you suppose Kurt would be today if he didn't take the easy way out?

  • @Old70sdude Wow... Kurt probably would have "softened" with time, and I assume would have brought an entire new facet and "upgraded" the grunge genre to new heights. Sure the times and struggles of today as well as his personal struggles would have given him much to write about. Maybe he would have even got free of the woman I think was his tormentor.... Who knows. Great singer/writer/artist. Too short of a lifespan.

  • @waypastprime I couldn't agree with you more. I am a big fan of Kurts. The way he ended it was very sad... He could've, and I think he would've, been a LIVING legend. It is what it is and he is gone now. All we can do is speculate. James IS a LIVING legend because when times got hard he loaded his pencil... Kurt loaded his gun. It's just so sad when people think that is their only option.

  • @waypastprime

naa he looks like more brandon boyd than KC

  • @mrthomas368 Not talking looks as much as other things, and I am oblivious to who Brendon Boyd is... No need to fret anyway. JT an KC were men of talent and comparable demon infection.. One lived.. longer, as I fear JT too some day must die!

  • I dont have some Tear jerking story about a dear friend or relative that always reminds me of this song. I found james taylor on my own but the song is truly beautiful

  • Man this song just reminds me of when i was like, 5 years old, in my dad's car listening to this on rainy days.

  • Holy crap. I just realized this song was about dealing with the depression that comes from losing someone you love.

  • He has the voice of an angel, I feel soothed just hearing it. Just wow

  • What a perfect angel. I love you James.

  • This is sappy. " won't you look down upon me Jesus, you got to help me to make a stand" ?!?! Fans of bland MOR stuff think he is one of the greatest singer/songwriters yet have never even HEARD of Tim Buckley or Nick Drake. Grow some taste.

  • @rdor011 I haven't asked them personally or anything, but I'll guarantee that Tim Buckley and Nick Drake would give James his props. He is sappy, sure, and kind of commercial, and soft-rocky - and great, nonetheless.

  • 48 people dont know what music is

  • @icampbell921 You can say that again!! Now it's 51 people who don't have a clue!

  • @icampbell921 I remember when I used to think those kind of comments were clever.....

  • I saw James on Oprah. At the end of Fire and Rain she asked..."What IS that song aBOUT!?" They simply went to commercial. I was quite surprised someone had not realiz

ed that is not a good or kind question to ask James.

  • the acoustic guitar is the best instrument on the world <3 especially when James plays it,.

  • forever in my mind, he is still just this way.

  • I totally love this voice, he could sing just about anything and I would love it anyways, what is amazing to me is that on top of having this voice he sings the right lyrics...

    Thanks James.

  • 45 DISLIKES??

  • these ads are a real buzz kill

  • Amo James Taylor lo amo da sempre un saluto a tutti da''Italia

  • This is about Susanne. She and James Taylor were both placed in mental institutions by their parents. Susanne Did Not make it back.

  • All you guitar acoustic guitar player, go to Bangosworld and lay down your songs, this is the place for undiscovered players. We need the "James Taylors" of the world. Just your voice, your soul, your guitar

  • Aweiss94 looks like there's 44 more on no mates Facebook then!

  • 44 people are still feeling lonely and can't find friends..

  • Amazing......just absolutely amazing.....

  • Wow! Former president James Taylor

  • James Taylor is awesome!!

  • I'm 20, and no music makes me feel more at ease and comfortable than James Taylor. I listen to him, and I instantly think of all the Sunday mornings in my parents' kitchen, having slow days with smiles, the long drives I went on listening to him to northern Indiana to see my girlfriend, and any number of slow, meaningful moments in my life.

No artist so perfectly describes through his music all the calmness in a human heart.

This man is a god. Seriously.

  • is there a DVD of this performance available somewhere? I would buy it...

  • I was 13 when I seen this on TV, I remember thinking WOW this is it. I got my older brothers ECHO acoustic and learnt to play guitar, music has been my life and I'm still playing guitar today 41 years later.

And I'm still a James Taylor fan!

  • wow he was so good looking :O

  • if I had talent I'd have this talent. crazy goodness.

  • this great song is greater than the sum of its parts . the feeling it inspires to so many people in so many different ways flows that is the best part of the human spirit ....

  • @motor1044 i believe they call that gistalt

  • My Dad used to sing this song to us when we were kids at bedtime. Just hearing it again makes me feel indescribably happy. <3<3

  • 44 Dislikes? Really UnFuc_ing believable.

  • just a young lad at the time, check "beacon theatre" for how he grew up,and still displays greatness,,,thanks for posting !!

  • People, this is not the place to be posting comments about your dead friends. I respect them, but this is not the place for it. I came here to listen to James Taylor, not to hear about a saddening event such as death.

  • @MrSkyche

Here's a way to fix that. Don't read the comments, minimize the page and just listen.

  • @thx1191 Point Taken.

  • @MrSkyche That's what the song makes them feel man.

  • Wow

  • In memory of old and dear friends, with love.x.

  • My dad used to listen to this in his car on 8 track.........thank god for the memories

  • My sophomore year of high school, one of my friends died in a car accident right next to my house, he was 500 yards from his house. One of my teachers and i listened to this song for a week straight. To this day no song moves me the way fire and rain does. People call me weird because I'm 18 and listen to james taylor and jim croce style music, but their songs are just so heartfelt.

    R.I.P. Jacob

  • @saintnathaniel listen my friend your not weird all it just go to show you got the ear for good music and they wouldnt know what good music was if it jumped out and hit em in the fucking head.

  • Comment removed

  • @saintnathaniel Listen, this is an irish fella after a night out and after coming in just chilling. Read your post and well, I just wanted to say that a friend of of mine ended his life by his own hand this year. I'm 22. He was 24. You're 18. Good music is good music no matter what. Who gives a fuck what they say, I certainly don't.

  • @saintnathaniel ur not weird to listen to james taylor he is one of the best folk musistions of his time u may even like carroln king great music and by the way in 23 ive been listening to great classoc rock n folk for some time now so actully ur one of the cool kids

  • @saintnathaniel Good luck with listening to JT. I've been listening to him since 1970

  • @saintnathaniel You made me cry asshole

  • @saintnathaniel You are not weird you are sensitive and there is nothing wrong with that! We need more young people like you in this world. You picked two fantastic musicians. There are more out there like Nick Drake etc. Being sensitive is a wonderful trait. You should not be ashamed.

  • @saintnathaniel im 55 female, this was my music in the late 60s and 70s best there was,and im thrilled to hear of somene much younger that knows great music, sorry to hear bout your friend, when i was a teen i lost omg atleast 7 friends to drugs in just maybe 3years time, starting when i was just 13. my daughter lost 3 in less than 2 yrs to accidents, we all face loss but its never easy,, take care and know someone knows what u are going thru

  • @saintnathaniel Im so glad to see a young person appreciate beautiful music. There is a lot of crap out there that thay call music, but it isnt real music. People need to appreciate all music. Some music is so beautiful and makes you feel. Im glad you appreciate the beauty of it. Spread it around! :o)

  • @saintnathaniel fuck people, listen to what you need, smile, cry, and learn

  • @saintnathaniel You are not weird!! You just relate to heartfelt music that tells a story. What better way to let out deep feelings!!

  • @saintnathaniel I am 33, love the Beatles, Classics such of Mozart, and have good taste in music I'd like to think. YOU have good taste, you have heard, and you're not "weird", you merely have found music you like. Nothing weird about that...you have taste. :)

  • What alot of folks don't think about is JT's guitar playing. It is superlative.

And quite complex with his harmony and voicing. And of course that

JT signature sound. You can try to duplicate but it will always be James.

The moment you hear that sound you say, "Yes, that sounds like James Taylor". He is a class act who is an American Treasure along with BB King,

    Dolly Parton and Bob Dylan.

  • Passei boa parte da minha vida ouvindo James Taylor.

  • wow cmt was around back then!!!

  • SUPERB MAN QUALITY XX

  • It's always been stated that James Taylor's voice is that of Jesus ~

    Kind, calming, reassuring ~

Dan Folgelberg's has those qualities, too.

I wonder who was his "angry" voice as Jesus did have a temper?

    Peace,

    V

  • This song brings back memories of my mother in-law who tragically lost her life on July 12, 2011. RIP Momma!!

  • my grandmother past away yesterday and today is her birthday r.i.p

  • I was homeless and 15 when this came out. while friends were into cooper, music like this, Carol niel,Niel, joannie, Cat, Siels^croft, Kept me on the level.

  • Sheer class with heart wrenching vocals and finger picking to die for....God this man really knew how to turn them out.

  • I remember listening to this song on cold winter days in 1970 at the University of Calgary and thinking that someone understood my loneliness and sadness.. when I hear it today those same memories come flooding back.

  • He has passion because he has seen the fire and rain

  • there has never been or will never be a voice like james taylors

  • @hr lady who???? lol

  • Love the finger pickin..pure genious!!

  • Amazing

  • I grew up listening to James Taylor and Carole King....feel good music that brings back wonderful memories of my childhood.

  • When my brother and I were babies, my parents would rock us to sleep to James Taylor. I guess my mother's voice wasn't the most soothing thing, so they would put a James Taylor album on. To this day, James Taylor always relaxes me. ♥

  • well if it helps i play this for my children all the time and they love it as much as i do and im sure they will share it with theirs when the time comes.
