The problem is that Chinese think their situation had gotten better because it was SO BAD in the past... cultural revolution, the great leap forward, all devastation brought on by the *current communist government* that is still in power!

In Taiwan and Hong Kong, their human rights have progressed too-- but they were so much higher than China's to begin with, that accepting China is a "great leap backwards". Why would Taiwan want to go backwards because some communists insist on "one China"?

After the European countries go democratic, they are unifying not separating. Same as Russia, russia is growing stronger and stronger after become democratic. Dude, the problem isn't that poor people aren't interested in politics. It is that Xinhua's perspective appears everywhere, even if you're not looking for it. You don't have to watch the news. If you're waiting for the bus, the newspaper is posted and you're bored so you read. If you're watching an "hip entertainment program" with a young host on CCTV, the young host is talking as if these are her own ideas. People talk about what they read and see, and Xinhua becomes the "truth" in China.

The problem as I see it is that even if people in China don't believe Xinhua, that's all there is by way of comparison and Xinhua's purpose is still served. To illustrate imagine Xinhua's perspective as X. Even if someone says "Xinhua may say X, but I believe X + 5" Xinhua still becomes the basis of public opinion. The west have radically varying opinions in media so we can see Arirang news, Bangkok Post, NY Times, Le Monde AND Xinhua, thereby getting a greater perspective to base our opinions.

But when I visit Foxnews, CNN and MSNBC websites, their reports are shockingly similar, or even identical, especially when it comes to foreign countries such as China. They work in a 'bipartisan way' to defame us just as they did in 2002 to demonize Iraq.

If you rely on news from one source (like american news) you see only one perspective. It's important to read what the world's news is reporting and draw your own conclusions. Sure, Taipei Times would only present one view on China, but then you can read other analyses from other countries and news agencies, including Xinhua, to make up your mind. By the way, when I was in China 2 years ago I could not access CNN, Fox News, Taipei Times or anything other than Xinhua on television or internet.
