  • One of the most underated 80's songs

  • Has an easy jazz feel and the mark of Becker and Fagen all over it. Pure class. Better than most of the muck from the 80s. Her voice was excellent also

  • This song reminds me of life I lived a long time ago, more specifically the people that were in it. Good and bad...it was some of the most enlightening years of my young life.

  • Great song. She reminds me a bit of Anita Baker, she has such a sultry, sexy voice. And what a body. Whew!

  • A timeless flowing song.

  • This song is good for my brain -- up vibe.

  • Takes me back to a lazy 1980s summer when I discovered Sky Trax and The Music Box and lay around dreaming for just about the last time ever.

  • Transport yourself back to the 80's and imagine finding this woman in a crowded nightclub and your eyes meet......holy crap!!....of course I hope you dudes know that you wouldn't have a chance if she met me--LOL!

  • Uber cool.

  • This woman is a fresh breath of air . I would dare anyone to pluck her up NOW and ask her to sing it again for all of us. I want to be president of the Rosie Vela fan club. She is from my hometown!!! Texas City. Texas Call me Rosie I love you!! Sheryl Meyers 713-829-7352

  • roll back the years..I have this on vinyl somewhere in a box...my 'bedsit' phase.beautiful

  • Sublime!

  • Love love love this song!!! Also LOVEEEEEEEE her other song Tonto but no ones uploaded it - wonder if my angel of mercy will come through one day!

  • wow! been looking for this song forever. first heard it when i was 17yrs old and she was on the front of Vogue with gorgeous raphaelite curls in around 1982 and I could not believe she was 35 yrs old at the time and she spoke about losing her boyfriend to cancer. love Donald Fagan, didnt know he was involved with this song. its one i could never get out of my head..where is she now :(

  • she has a magic voice ....love her ...she is from Galveston Texas. I am also from Galveston Co.

  • OMG!!! I was in love w this song in the 7th grade. I have been searching for this song for many years but I didn't know the name or artist, just a few lyrics and I FINALLY got a match. I am super excited tonight.

  • she is righteous..............even with ELO

  • Magic, cheers bud.

  • DONT MAKE EM NO MORE LIKE THIS!

FANTASTIC SONG THAT BRINGS BACK SO MANY MEMORIES!

OH TO BE BACK THERE WHERE THE WORLD FELT A MUCH BETTER/SAFER PLACE!

  • loved this. wow...25 yrs ago now.

  • Great song and video. Rosie Vela is a superb singer, not to mention a goddess, but her life story is even better. One amazing woman! I got the re-released Zazu from Cherry Red Records, definitely money well spent.

  • I remember this track from my childhood. Sky One used to show the video and I always remembered it (and the hypnotic melody), but not the artist or title. I had been searching for donkey's years, on youtube, mp3 sites, flicking through 1986 compilations etc. with no luck. Then yesterday I was in my mate's gaff and he puts on this track. Although I had no idea about it before, the Dan link doesn't surprise me - timeless stuff!

  • Class.. STILL.. after all these years.

I'll never u'stand fools who, before pulling the 'dislike' trigger, clearly see they're below 1% in thier negativity to something as perfectly original, tasteful & unique as this.

So thumbs down (& run away w'out explaining your warped view of 'music' to the rest of us) if you're an asshole.

Thanx so much for posting this dijssel5

  • hot news it is being re released in june in 25th anniversary edition ,about time too.from 86' a cracker that i stupidly sold a few years back. now i know better!

  • Such a unique sound. I ware out the cassette tape from playing it so much.

My favorite is Zazu! Hope someone has it.

  • This song brings back so many memories for me. What a stunningly beautiful woman Rosie was and likely still is. Does anyone know what happened to her? I would love for this album to be released again - It's on AMazon for fifty quid!!!

  • sexy song/video.

  • What a song! Every time I hear this song, I can't help but feel like dancing . . .

  • Steely dan x Rosie = perfection

  • good looks and terrific music.

  • I could have made her a hugely successful star. A beautiful and talented musician -mired by her choice of musical styles, made her virtually un-marketable. Had she chosen to "mainstream" her career, she would have topped the charts for many years. I guess that wasn't what Rosie wanted.

  • @jdorisco she must have something special ....She didnt want it to be the product of someone else. If you couldnt accept her for the songs she sang then.....she wasnt going to make you rich by the sweat off her brow.

Good for you Rosie.. I admire you and pray someday that I meet you. Sheryl from Galveston Tx

  • Heard this coming from an open top car in a Tesco's car park in Bedford (UK) and forgot how good this still sounds after all this time. This was so much better than the other stuff in 1986. Thank you man in the Saab 900 for brining back memories.

  • Beautiful Steely Dan produced music, beautiful woman!

  • What a Babe!

  • Ahhhhhhhh words can't express my delight tres excited merci merci merci:-)

  • Love to get this on cd is it possible? Had the cassette yonks ago love the Dan influence

  • @cocoacooke I have it for you Cocoa. I made mp3's out of my old tape. I'll get it to you over Chrimbo. :¬)

  • Love that Fagen/Becker sound.

  • Waler Becker and Donald Fagin (Steely Dan) played on this and it was produced by Gary Katz, who produced most of SD's albums. That's why it sounds so cool and timeless.

  • So nice to see rosie back !! always been a big fan!

thanks for putting up this video.

  • Gorgeous ..id eat chips out of her knickers, cool song as well.

  • wow!! i love this entire "zazu", my cousin was able to find the cassette for me years ago since it was a cutout...now i have been looking for the cd....i luv rosie velas vocals and the rhythms, and the words and luv all of it!!! phew thanx for the post!!

  • Thanks for posting! I wonder what she's doing now.

  • Amazing, she's getting HOTTER as she gets older. She's like a female version of Benjamin Button.

  • A forgotten blusey masterpiece. I remember 1986 and this wonderful music.

  • I just realized she's wearing a Bauhaus T-shirt in this video...

  • Nice to see Rosie, thanks,

  • your smile is magic, beatiful Rosie.

  • Thanks for posting this!

  • If this had come out in 1993 it would have been huge. Way ahead of her time. Beautiful song...

  • Comment removed

  • I seen her on the ELO ZOOM dvd. She is the backup singer, she is great, so I just had to see if I could find out more about her and I found this and I`m glad I did. Man, she is hot and a really good singer too.

  • Anywhere to find this on CD?

  • Love this song!

  • this song (and video) has always had an hypnotic effect on me.

  • La plus belle femme du monde !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • shes pretty. This is my mums fave song. Its great !

  • She got hotter as she got older. Too bad she only dates old men...oh wait that's me! I'd like to spend some time with her and let her play with my grand piano!

  • one of my all time favs

  • still have the album

    coraclewoman

  • @MillymollysX same im 19. Old music is so much better than alot of todays music !

  • @lippy170 Dude, you're 19... and you're still making these kinds of comments?

  • Ok Rosie....it's been like 24 years....ENOUGH ALREADY! CALL DONALD AND WALTER AND TELL THEM IT IS TIME FOR A NEW ALBUM. I WANT MORE!!!

  • pretty

  • A rare jewel

  • @lombmusic07

    That she is indeed..

  • Rosie was very young when she married her musician husband after he was diagnosed with cancer. He encouraged her to perform his material and she went on to produce her own. She did date Jeff Lynne for many years an on/off affair. He has an interview on You Tube talking about 'Livin Thing "finding e minor was a real treat" (Brummie accent naturally) She got Steely Dan back together for this track............It's a woman thing :-D

  • I love this song and i love Rosi...

  • Andy Summers supposedly played on ZAZU, I guess since they were both on A&M, it was easy to ask him to be a guest on the LP. I can't find my copy, so I can't check if he's on it.

What's this about Rick Derringer being her brother? That's news to me.

Last I heard she was dating Jeff Lynne, but that was in the early 2000s. Before Jeff, she lived with artist Peter Max for many years.

Rosie actually wanted to be a musician before she got sidetracked by her modeling career.

  • LOVE THIS!! searching for it for ages and never knew who sang it! xxx

  • Rodsie Vela seemed to have it all; great looking great voice and a very good songwriter to boot.

So why did she disappear, seemingly without trace?

Wasn't that the magnificent Jim Keltner on this track?

  • Check out the DVD (or on YouTube) of ELO's Zoom Tour. She is the singer next to Jeff Lynne. Zoom is from 2001. She still is attractive.

  • Thanx!!!! Such a nice song!

  • Her voice is sexy! I love this song. ''i bin trying to see ya baby''

  • thank you for uploading this - back when shoulder pads and leggings were all the rage- this was probably my favorite chill ALBUM!

  • any chance you could upload 2nd emotion and boxs on here ?

  • I totally love this! It still sounds awesome!

  • I saw this video on MTV and went out the next day and bought the album. Still sounds great more than 20 years later.

  • great musical touch, so beautiful and such a talent ! GREAT ROSIE !!!!

  • Rosie keeps emailing me wanting to know if I'll be her sex slave. Only problem is that she insists on me buying my own flight ticket. Must not want me that bad then.

    : P

  • Wow, I SO loved Zazu! Wish she'd kept putting out more music!!! She must still be creating songs; where are they?...

  • thank you for sharing this vid ! great song i had totally forgot until i hear it on the radio yesterday ! (hervé, from France)

  • Damn, she's still hot! Her voice is amazing on ELO's Zoom tour 2001.

  • God,i love this song !!!!

  • funny thing is 23 years on this still sounds 100 per cent better than the rubbish today -

  • That's true even if it does borrow a lot from "Everybody wants to rule the world"

  • joshii, Tears For Fears, thats interesting because I was hearing China Crisis who Walter Becker produced I think about the same time as this.

  • @MAURIZIOSABATINI1 every music video i watch. Has so many comments on how poor majority of music is today. And its true ! We should riot. Bring back good music !!

  • @MAURIZIOSABATINI1 couldn't have said it better myself!

  • @MAURIZIOSABATINI1 i second that ...

  • @MAURIZIOSABATINI1 sad but true.

  • @MAURIZIOSABATINI1 Utterly true!

  • @MAURIZIOSABATINI1 Yep, much better than Paul McCartney.

  • Okinawa, 1986/7... Had no idea who she was or what the album would sound like, bought it and have been haunted by her voice since. Bring back real FM radio! Bonoff, Ronstadt...

  • me again on my own account instread of using my freinds daughters account!!!!

i soo agree music finished in early 90's there is not the quality or emotion today!!!

  • What a great band. I always wondered what happened to her. I hope she's happy and doing well. Maybe she'll put out a record again? Best wishes-XO

  • She was Jeff Lynne's girlfriend and band member of ELO back around 2001. Search for "ELO Zoom Live" on YouTube, and you'll see her performing onstage beside the mighty Jeff Lynne. She was a really classy and lovely lady when I last met her back in 2001.

  • Actually, also look at the 18 second clip entitled "Rosie Vela interview" where she speaks alongside Jeff Lynne.

  • In 1987 I was living in Key West and I saw Rosie perform on the beach. Was lucky enough to meet her and her brother Rick Derringer was playing guitar.

  • @loveetc how do you knw that really was her brother ?

  • @loveetc how do you knw that really was her brother ?

  • I thought I would take a chance and see if there was anything on youtube. It's a great surprise to hear Magic Smile- still sounds great.

  • Two days ago I hooked up my old turntable and pulled out the LP(it's still in great shape).

  • I discovered Rosie back in 1986 when Zazu was first released. I loved the record and played it all the time.

  • I still have the Vinyl LP - "Zazu" fredmila. It's something of a rarity now fetching over $175 new.

The Donald Fagen presence lifts the album a lot.

  • never knew they actually made a record. I bought the tape in 1986 when $7 was a lot of money for me. She inspired me that tough year. I bought the CD from amazon for like 15 and burned about 5 copies of it so i'll never need to buy another.

  • I have Zazu on vinyl - it's in good condition but it will never be 'new'. Are there any new vinyls in existence anyway? :)

  • Totally felt the Fagen touch in this. Glad I was not mistaken. Thanks for the info.

  • Great Song! Great Video! Great Album! Great Lady!

  • Like other people here I wonder why she just stopped making records. Zazu was like the first thing that Amy Winehouse or Duffy would have done and see where they are now.

I only remember that an American cousin told me, in the 80's, that she had problems with drugs.

Anyhow, still waiting for that difficult second album.......

  • Wow, this is the "extended" version! I only ever remember seeing the video up until about 3:40. Cool and thanks for posting this!

  • This song just has a really great feel to it. I remember finding the CD in a used bin a few years ago and bought it because I thought it was great music to play in the restaurant I ran after college.

  • I don't remember ever seing a video of the song Zazu. It's amazing that someone with such a great voice and song writing ability should just give it all up!? Wonder if she sings down at the local pub...........

  • Looking for the zazu video, i don't even know if it exists, i loved this song...

  • wo!I had no clue she had an album,i only know her as a model!

  • it's smell Donald Fagen

  • Just GOOGLE her, you'll find out plenty.

  • No, she wasn't Donald Fagen's girlfriend. Steely Dan's producer (Gary Katz) was producing her album, and Donald popped in one day and played on a track. Walter Becker did too, on a different day. Rosie smelled Steely Dan and asked Gary if he could get them both in the studio at the same time. When he succeeded, the atmosphere went from initial tension to the old full-on wisecracking. From there D&W went on to start writing together again. Kudos to Rosie for facilitating the Dan's return.

  • She is alive and well and living in the northern suburbs of Los Angeles

  • I love Rosie and wish she would have continued in music. The "Donald" influence is so clear in the arrangement and production which just lends to it's charm. Thanks for posting.

  • I love this song! I used to play it all the time when it first came out. She was so beautiful and had such a warm and soulful voice. What happened to her?

  • Is she wearing a Bauhaus t-shirt?

  • This only got to 27 in the UK. What an absolute classic. Like you moreasy, I hadn't heard this for 20 years. Well worth the wait!

  • She ended up being Jeff Lynne of ELO partner and did backing vocals for him

  • I have been looking for this song since 1986, no idea who sang it.

    Now I finaly found it, 2008. I'm 35 now.

    Phew!

  • I am lookin' for Rosie already my whole life! Phew phew!

    PS i am 55!

  • I understand you ! It's a magnificent song :unforgettable ! Shame to me, I know her only for some months.

Now, I place her in five songs which I could take on a desert island. She should be played constantly.

  • forgot all about this song. great.

    i would

  • Damn- I could hear this in the playlist of "Gaucho"...

  • Gaucho....?????

  • Steely Dan's 1980 album. This track sounds like it could slot right in... to my ears, anyway...

  • I played my cassette of this to ribbons when I first got it years ago. I don't know if I was more obsessed with how erotic I thought the song was, or the fact that Rosie Vela just took my breath away. The rest of the album doesn't disappoint and I'm sorry there seems to be a second album locked up somewhere. I'm currently looking (like lots of others apparently) for a CD. Thanks dijssel5 for sharing your excellent musical taste with us!

  • My then girlfriend, now best wife ever, bought me this tape when it first came out and somewhere in the course of several moves it got lost. Does anyone on the planet know where to get a copy? I've seen some listed here and there but they never seem to actually exist when you try to buy one. I thought Rosie was a pretty good artist and can't believe there never was a second album. Too bad as she's got a great voice.

  • I have the album which I converted to digital. I can burn you a disc but it'll cost ya.

Let me know if you are intested

  • Such a beautiful song. I remember seeing her once at the artist Peter Max's studio. I think they were together.

  • THIS SONG made her pretty famous in France!

got her album.. reminds me so many souvenirs...

one of the best of the album.

    miss you ROSIE!

22 years already!... and not a wrinkle!

    miss ya!!!!

  • that was fuckin' great that song ! saw her in Rennes, France, more than 20 years ago, i even gave her a kiss wahouuuuuuuuuu

  • how cool is that -thanx not heard it and never seen the vid

  • La ragazza più deliziosa e soprattutto più brava di tutti i tempi! Rosie, ti amo da 22 anni e continuerò ad amarti sempre (insieme a moglie e figlie, ovvio!).

  • Boho style a good 20 yrs before Sienna et al!

  • After all of these years this song still evokes memories!

  • 'Zazu' is one of the great lost classic albums, my vinyl copy is all but worn out!

  • Wow, Where do I begin? I was at university, no TV, I listened to records & the radio day & night. I was a big fan of Donald Fagen's The Nightfly & it was the Donald Fagen connection that drew me to this. It's as perfect a single now as it was then. Vocal, Production, Writing cannot be faulted. I had the impression that the fact that she had been a model prejudiced the public against her. I thank God I had an open mind & open ears! I still have the album on vinyl, must look for the CD. True Class

  • i want just tell....

this song is wanderful, the singer beautiful and her voice fantastic.

i cant belive what in 80's a topmodel can sing in that wanderful way.

she made fantastic games whit her voice in this song.

and i ask to me, why she made only a succesful LP?why she can't made anything else after that?

i think :is difficoult in the present to find a good singer like this....

  • "I remember when MTV would play this video late at night; back in the day's when I was feelin' zazu!"

  • Troppo bella. Troppo brava. Una fata. Una dea. Un mito della nostra adolescenza 80's. Altro che le squallide veline dei 2000's. Che altro dire? Rosie, ti penserò anche in punto di morte!

  • This song is brilliant. Managed to find a very good copy of Zazu on Ebay at a not too inflated price and have been playing it ever since. I just wish the second album would be released, rather than beink kept in a music company's safe somewhere....oh well one day perhaps. Does anyone know where Rosie is these days and what she is doing. I cannot believe that a supermodel with such a brilliant voice can just fade away.

  • She was touring with the reunited ELO way back in the early 2000s, but they had to cancel the shows for lack of ticket sales. She looks and sounds great in "Strange Magic" next to Jeff Lynne at the ELO PBS concert. Haven't heard of her after that.

  • I bought this in 86 and played it to death, just such a great record. Had a big crush on a girl with a perfect smile, can still recall her today if I close my eyes. Great Song, Great Year. Where's a time machine when you need one.

  • you know they talk about MADONNA AND BRITNEY ETC ETC ETC - BUT C'MON THIS LADY ON ONE ALBUM BEATS THEM ALL SHE IS A WONDERFUL RARE TALENT AND TO THINK SHE ONLY MADE ALBUM BUT IN SOME WAYS THATS A GOOD THING A ONE AND TRULY GREAT

  • Absolutely correct Gosshhx. This song kicks the absolute arse off any record nowadays and certainly anything Britney has done. Madonna has had her moments - 'Live To Tell' is still one of her best songs to this day. Some people take the piss out of the 80s but 80s music will live on and be remembered far longer than todays garbage.

  • i have rosie velas only cd and it is a fantastic and real rare gem - i was lucky to find this cd as throughout my life this song has haunted me in a good way - this song just vanished and time moved on and heard it for the first time in years on youtube so thankyou - there is something very special about this album goes to show what real talent is and has the added greatness of DONALD FAGEN who is a magician!!-

  • I was a teenager in the late 80s and I was always listening to Radio 1 and the chart but for some reason this record totally passed me by. I just don't remember it at all but I'm so glad I found it. Brilliant record.

  • "With a little from Walter Becker and Donald Fagan from Steely Dan!"

  • one thing i can say

    "she's a hottie!!"

  • Hell of a vocal performance - if you don't believe me try to sing along! Goes all over the place.

  • Are the still toghether?

Im from Argentina, I dont know her, Is she famous? She is really beauty!

  • The face of an angel.

  • I wish somebody would post some of the other stuff from the album. It was (and still is) top drawer stuff.

Wasn't she a model back in the day?

  • this is top banana, i haven't heard it for yonks and it still sounds good after nearly 20 years.

  • i like her hair. like a wild aryan woman

  • rosie we love you still ..one of my favourite albums...great track...xxxx mick in london xxx simon in la xxx

  • How quaint !!

  • AWESOME video! What a great song! I wish the cd wasn't so expensive! I guess quality things do appreciate. She sure is beautiful...

  • Great! The Genius of Fagen and Becker....

  • This sure takes me back too! Loved it then and it still stands up so well. Thank you Rosie.

  • I used to get lost in Zazu. Makes a change cos these days I'm just lost in music, caught in a trap, etc

  • I know exactly where you are talking about. It was a Turtle's that had a music and movie section. So it became Atlanta CD, huh. Oh well, I will call Wax'n Fax tomorrow. Great info. Thanks arizona. I love replying to the music. I only wish I could hear Interlude again. Today's my b'day; it would be really cool to find Zazu tomorrow. Wish me luck:-)

  • Don't rub it in arizona, losing Zazu is one of my life's regrets. The digitally re-mastered CD was offered in what 2001? I'm in Atlanta. Was Atlanta CD downtown or in the burbs?
