Lets think of this straight up, The band are in a concert so of course their voices are weaker and so what if they're using some auto tune, The majority of singers we listen to now days are auto tuned, and yeah this is one of the few songs of theirs that are auto tuned. If one band used auto tune the world is pissed where as when we hear some other shit everyone's all candy and rainbows.

haha well first it cant be vocoder because that only works with instruments AND vocals. since the synth guy isnt playing the notes hes singing it cant be a vocoder. and autotune doesnt make someone not legit? its a vocal effect, everyone uses it, but he uses it to make a cool vocal effect instead of using it to correct mistakes in pitch.

I wasn't referring specifically to this band, as quite frankly, powerpop/techno isn't my thing, but this song is really catchy, and I like it, but I haven't heard much else by Hellogoodbye. I was responding to someone who said that using autotune doesn't make you "not legit," and i responded with my thoughts that using it exclusively doesn't require any talent, so if you autotune all of your music, you shouldn't be considered a legitimate artist.

autotune can fix minor pitch errors (in which case youd never know if it was being used or not) or to completely distort vocals, as done here. it doesnt make you not legit if used this way because its just an effect, you have to be able to change pitch rapidly or the autotune effect wont sound like it does in let's say T-Pain's songs. if you just want to sound better, and tidy up your pitch changes then yes youre not legit. But hey almost all the music youll hear is "not legit" then :)

@itsaforestfire you misunderstand. autotune only straightens pitch, but when a human changes pitch the autotune softwareis programmed to make the pitch change at a certain speed, like D to A in 2 seconds, or D to A instantaneously. When it is on its highest speed it creates the effect you hear in this song and in many others like T-Pain's. You can't use it for both effect and controlling pitch because the effect is controlling the pitch

It's not fake, it's not even auto tune. It's definitely vocoder, which distorts the voice just like a distortion pedal would change the sound of a guitar. Hellogoodbye is totally legit.
