  • I was a fan of both Cat Stevens & Rod Stewart in the seventies, but didn't know cat wrote this until years later, when I read the credits on Rods greatest hits album.

  • I've heard Sheryl Crowe give credit to Cat Stevens for this song in an interveiw. She said that she liked the Rod Stewert version better.

  • Is that Peter Tork from The Monkees on guitar?

  • With that haircut and no beard, Cat looks looks like a perfect meld between Pete Townshend and Keith Moon.

  • Just come across this from a link on a website - great to see! Top tune by Cat Stevens.

As someone previously mentioned, his backing band were from Birmingham, I remember them as the Wages of Sin back in the late 60's. Hadn't thought about it at the time but yes, the lead guitarist Mick Hopkins does look a bit like Peter Tork!!

  • What,no one noticed Peter Tork from the "Monkeys" playin a "tele"behind Cat?! :)) ahahahaha!

  • Haha this video is beautiful to listen to, hard to watch. Was the camera man drunk? :P

  • There are so many amazing singers that are lost to the current generation.. too many people are unaware of geniouses like cat stevens and elton john. With all the covers, many people are clueless as to who was the first to sing the song. Love you cat stevens!

  • U know he changed his name to Yusuf Islam

  • CONGRATULATIONS on being nominated for the SONGWRITERS HALL OF FAME, 2012, YUSUF/Cat Stevens/akaSTEVEN DEMETRE GEORGIOU!!

  • look at the credits on cats album mathew and son

  • Love his coat, I had one like it in Jr High. LOL

  • 1) hes not lip syching...thats the quality of video and audio combo you get from that time. A lot of times audio and video were recorded separately...also the change to new technology (digital) can also put a delay on the audio. 2) Yes, you are correct...he wrote it then gave it to someone else to record it, but he's not covering it...its his. As well as, its a cover if he does the same rendition.

  • does the guitarist think he's Peter Tork or what

  • The epitome of grooviness.......Best ever version of "The First Cut is The Deepest", by singer/songwriter/musician, Cat Stevens. (His own composition). His voice still sounds much the same, improving with each new concert, since his return to the stage. I noticed this especially in his introduction to the song.

  • wow they look quite stoned there :-p

  • Yea! Because of me this video now has 69 likes.

  • THIS SONG WAS NOT RECORDED IN 1968 BUT ON 17/18 NOVEMBER 1967, IT WAS BROADCASTED 1968 ON FRANCE TELEVISION,

(so that means the ENTIRE concert must still exist)

The concert is known as "La Nuit de la Fenêtre Rose" happening at Le Palais Des Sports in paris, another video from this concert ( not cat) is here: /watch?v=q4iX7cRvPNc

Give thumbs up so people know this information :)

  • @SachaTheEvilOne updated the info on the video! thanks

  • @ClassicRockVideo no thank YOU for uploading it :)

its the only video of the young cat where he doesnt lipsync

  • @SachaTheEvilOne your crazy......

  • @SaucyTuRkLeBiRd How do you mean?

  • @SachaTheEvilOne Lipsyncing?

  • @SaucyTuRkLeBiRd this is the only video footage of him NOT lipsyncing in the 60's

  • @SachaTheEvilOne Whatever you say lol

  • @SaucyTuRkLeBiRd XD you don't believe me don't you , the reason why he lipsync's in the other footage was because the german show were he preformed had a very bad mic, (if cat would sing it would be very very loud, what would result in people become deaf, so he HAD to lipsync)

  • @SachaTheEvilOne Disbelief still

  • @SaucyTuRkLeBiRd ok check out his video of come on and dance from 1967, notice that after the song is finished he keeps talking for a second in the microphone but you don't hear him

this is the video : /watch?v=TuMX6pGGPP4 watch at 2:00

notice this version is exactly the studio version

  • @SachaTheEvilOne okay ill watch

  • @SachaTheEvilOne they just fade out the sound at the end of the song...

  • @SaucyTuRkLeBiRd Well i tried my best to confince you, you believe what you think and i believe what i think,

its better if we just end this pointless conversation

    peace

  • @SachaTheEvilOne good point, i didnt come here to fight and we both seem to have gone a mature way of talking about this

  • @SachaTheEvilOne He is not lypsyncing .. trust me :) x

  • @SaucyTuRkLeBiRd He wasnt lipsynching .. impossible! He sounds so good live all the time ... Impossible !!!

  • @Aurarisma I dont think he lipsynched

  • thank you somuch! i never seen this song live!

  • A big thank you to the film crew that has allowed the world to see the original writer and singer perform that song live!

  • Is that Peter Tork on Bass from the Monkees?

  • BTW Cheryl Crow is trying to claim this is "her song." Not! If Rod Stewart and Linda Ronstadt did fair covers with proper credit why can't Ms Crow??

  • @dtappel Cat's cover of this song is pretty awesome too.now before you jump all over me, it wasn't until winter '67 Cat released this on an album. this song was recorded then released by another artist in the spring of 67. yes, he wrote it. but he did not perform the original recording though!

  • @dtappel

:-) , in my oppinion there is no singer in this world who really should cover a song from this guy. No cover could be anywhere close to the genius of his versions.

  • @dtappel maybe cause everybody knows that is from Cat Stevens, but you are right for the new generation it would be fair to say so

  • Who is the cool drummer?

  • The best song ever.... Thumbs up :P

  • Get the audio from this tune at speedyconversion doht cohm.

  • Brought back some wonderful memories - I can see them now doin' So You Wanna Be A Rock'n Roll Star - and the days we'd go pickin' flowers with Ed and Brian in Sutton Park :) - but the loss of Brian, so very very sad. :(

Thanks so much for uploading this. Much appreciated.

  • What a great surprise to see this!! I had chills go down my spine when I saw Brian..

WoW! Dont know what to say..

  • Those were the days eh? I was married for 25 years to one of the backing group. It all began in 50's America, concluding with the memorable 60's UK. It REALLY was an AMAZING decade...

  • Future Fludd singer Ed Pilling is sitting out, but you can see his brother Brian Pilling on guitar and backing vocals (later in Fludd) with drummer Jimmy Skidmore, bass player Tony Clarkson (later in World of Oz) and lead guitarist Mick 'Sprike' Hopkins, who was later in Lemon Tree, Copperfield, Idle Race (replacing Jeff Lynne), Fludd and Quartz.

  • @04warby the whole story behind Zeus...including this performance is featured on a Shindig! magazine

  • This is from Palais des Sports, Paris from November 1967 and documents the brief period (Oct 1967-January 1968) when Stevens was backed by Zeus, formely Yellow Rainbow and Wages of Sin.

  • Great performance! The drummer sounds exactly like Ginger Baker, eventho it's not him.

  • Great stuff, thanks for sharing.

  • really .... how AMAZING to see this cat from 60's(LIVE)

  • just when i thought i had seen all his videos!

  • Amazing!! Merci beaucoup!

  • Cat live in 1968? Thanks a million for this rare gem.

  • Wonderful - that was even before my time . . . Thanks for posting !!!
