we have this problem in philadelphia as well to a much larger extent. sweetvegan is right about t&k not working for long, however there is a long term solution, in your case:
It actually costs more to have animal control put them down than it does to have a caretaker catch and have them spayed and neutered. If you remove them, the void will refill with new cats. TNR (Trap Neuter Release) works.
Repeating myself. You can't remove them all. People bring them and leave them, other cats not removed breed to fill capiticty. T&K does not work and is inhumane.
T&K costs more to trap, house, feed and hold and kill at shelters plus the cats repopulate the ones taken. TNR was done in my area and people are amzed on how well it works.
No cat damages, the cat population is down, they rarely bother people and the neighborhood is clean and everyone respects each other. All my local shelters are FOR TNR they have enough friendly strays that are brought in from other neighborhoods. Why take in more unadoptable cats to be killed and let the ones not caught breed twice as many later? Pointless.
Good to know. I'll look into a local chapter. I've counted 11 and know there is more cats, that use my and a neighbors yard as a litter box. Between that and the constant spraying the stench is aweful. We have or animals that stay in our control. In 1 hour 5 cats will dig and defecate.
What's truly sad is a neighbors un neutered male that sprays and sprays, fights mates and scratches, and digs everything. property destruction from his I repeat his not the communities. Unwanted litters
The ferals in my area make better neighbors. They don't spray or fight anymore. They stay to themselves and don't dig in gardens. My friend neutered 16 cats in her backyard alone over the years. The number is down to 11 and no new cats have sighted since.
In reality we all live on an island surrounded by water. When I meant we do not live on a island I'm talking about a little tiny land completely surrounded by water. Main is large. Like most places. Where's there people dumping cats there are feral cats.
Please read Tabor's book on feral cats and vacuum effect and educate yourself. Trap and Kill only proves that some people like to kill for nothing. It does not work.
Doesnot work. We do not live on an island, new cats will come and replace the ones removed. Neutering lets the old cats stay and keep other cats from coming. So the colony numbers fades off. I have dealt with this problem for years and learned the hard way that removing does not work for long. Why kill animals when the fault if from neglectful pet owners.
Mount Desert Island is not quite an island. It's only separated from the mainland by a couple hundred yards of water that turns into mud at low tide. Also, there's a bridge.

yes.. sadly most cats are "ditched" from cruel humans who throw them away. That is why we need TNR.

Exactly. I have severe cat problems. Domestic and feral. TNR does not work and is more costly.

Very good. I assume that property/homeowners properties are also well taken care of. and compensated for the cat damages.

No doubt that cat leash laws are being pursued. Same as for dogs if not more stringent.

hunting cats is illegal in most states, that plus does not control the problem, it just allows new cats to take place of ones killed.
