indrajeet was undoubtedly the most powerful warrior in entire ramayana. laxman didnt allow him to complete his rituals known as "yagna" and attacked him after the sunset, which was not considered ethical at that time.
Indrajeet was the most powerful demon warrior. Even Indrajit unethically attacked Laxman will spear, which made Laxman almost cost his life. There is nothing wrong in taking unethical actions against a person who is very unethical, if there is no other ethical way of stopping that unethical person.
Also, if you are on the righteous path and following the path of Dharma then using the means of what laxman did at the end wasn't wrong as he was fighting to restore righteous over earth.
