  • Kirk, thanks for the video.

I do a fair amount of synthetic stucco and just picked up a Darby, never used one before. I'd like to start using one to get my finish a little flatter. The problem I had was when I went to hit it with the Darby the mud was a little stiff to push around. I always soak my scratch before putting on brown, usually have about a 1/4" brown coat. Am I putting the brown on too thin?

  • @jonnyking44 Hey pal, (3 coat stucco same day!

This video, titled and dated above I did the same thing on the top, but the second time at the end of the video, I went old school and showed how I correct the issue of not enough mud. When I was union I would always tell the pump man spray it on fat and ugly, because it much easier to darby when it’s full. Not enough mud you will burn your energy in but an hours’ time.

    Best wishes.

  • I just bought a 1.5 metre feathering straight edge to compliment my 2.00m feather straight edge. The mesh is it fully dip galvanised And do you put lime in your render? How does that effect the mesh in years to come? I reinforced some brick work using a galv mesh and was told the lime eventually corrodes the metal. What are your thoughts?

  • @ron1martens Hi Ron, I have been using galvanized wire forever, I've not heard of Portland or any other cement eroding this metal. I do realize that sometime when we run our rods or darby’s over the exterior corners many times it can remove some of the galvanized coating and cause the steel to rust. But it's rare. However, rapid set when applied has to set 30 days before painting or the corners will sometimes rust, just allow proper cure times.

    Best wishes,

  • @StuccoPlastering Hello Kirk. Yes I agree its not the portland that causes corrosion. Its interesting because you don't mention using lime in your mortar. Its mainly the lime that causes corrosion. The use of lime in mortars is used extensively in Western Australia. But now I no longer use lime in my mortar and its a lot better for my hands. I would like to know what additive you put in your render to give it workability as things are different where you live opposed to here.

  • @ron1martens Hey Ron, I rarely add anything to my bags (except sand) of stucco except occasionally luminite, which acts as an accelerator. I buy premium stucco it has the strength of common and the workability of plastic pre mixed in one bag, I just add sand. 20 years ago I used to buy the bags separately but even back then the only thing I would add was sometimes fibers for strength. Sorry I am no help to your question. But have a groovy day down under.

  • @StuccoPlastering Thanks for the information Kirk you have answered my question. Its interesting you have bags of pre mixed stucco. We don't have such products here. What you were doing we call a render. I now use a product with cement and sand called screed bond from calmarc. If you are interested type a search on calmarc and a site will open with products such as screed bond addp elastotak to name a few. Its interesting you use luminite as an accelerator.

  • Hey Kirk great video. Can you explain a little about the darby. I was thinking about picking one up, and I've seen some with "keyed" or "serrated" edges on one or both sides. Any preferences?

  • @hmanontario Hey dude,The serrated darby allows the stucco to dry faster. I did a project today where I answered your question, it will show you how and why and explain the difference between Serrated and smooth and their purposes. My son said he would do the video this evening. Thanks for the question. If any of you folks have questions I will answer them in a video and explain if I can the reasons behind the tools.

    Have a groovy day!

  • Hey Agent480, you may be right. That fella didn't hurt my feelings though, I worked behind a gun for three years as either the only or second Darby guy. We would scratch or brown sometimes between 8 to 12 home daily for years. I know how to use that Darby well. How knows what really bothered him, maybe the video was too long. Thanks for the compliment, and have a good evening.
